Turn an early DEV.to post into portfolio evidence by connecting it to work someone can inspect: a repository, demo, contribution, or clearly defined technical problem. Then explain the problem, what you personally did, the decisions you made, and an outcome you can support. If the post does not point to a distinct project, keep it as a writing or learning sample rather than stretching it into a product story.
Find the work behind the post
Choose a post you can still explain accurately. Look for the underlying project, code, contribution, prototype, or technical problem—not just the subject of the article. A post about building a feature, debugging a failure, or choosing between approaches may lead to a strong case study even if the original project is small.

Follow the evidence from the post to a repository, live demo, pull request, or other inspectable artifact. If the code or demo is no longer available, you can still describe the work if you can explain your role and choices, but be clear about what a reader can and cannot verify. Brian Rinaldi’s 2021 walkthrough of combining DEV posts with GitHub information is an example of connecting writing to project evidence; its setup and API details are historical, not a current integration recipe.

Prioritize relevance and evidence over age or polish. A useful candidate makes it possible to understand what was built or investigated, what you contributed, and why the work matters to your intended audience.
#1 Best Overall
- Confidently track and manage large jobs with ease
- Project ruling provides instant organization for notes, plans & deadlines
- Premium-weight paper is perforated to detach easily
- Snag-resistant coil and extra-strong back are perfect for notes on the go
- Gray, navy or maroon cover, 7-1/4" x 9-1/2", 84 sheets
- Strong project candidate: The post describes tangible work, and you can link to the implementation or explain a specific technical decision.
- Useful writing sample: The post demonstrates teaching, analysis, or communication, but does not correspond to a distinct project you can claim.
- Learning exercise: If it followed a tutorial, say so. Identify your own additions or adaptations, and do not present the exercise as an independently built product unless that accurately describes your contribution.
Compare candidates by relevance to the role or audience, how much work can be inspected, how clearly your contribution is separable from others’, and whether you can explain a decision, constraint, or result. Also consider the effort needed to repair stale links, code, or screenshots. These are practical editorial checks, not a validated scoring system.
Write a concise case study
Make each entry answer the questions a reader needs to assess the work. The eggheadio portfolio template treats case studies as project entries alongside articles, while the daily.dev portfolio guide recommends describing the problem, role, stack, and outcome and linking to live work or a repository when possible.

- Project and problem: What needed to be solved, and for whom? Give enough context to make the task understandable.
- Your role: State what you personally designed, implemented, tested, or documented. For team work, distinguish your contribution from the team’s.
- Implementation: Name the technologies and tools that help explain the work. Avoid turning this into an unexplained inventory.
- Decision or tradeoff: Describe a meaningful constraint, alternative, or lesson. Explain why the chosen approach fit the situation.
- Outcome: Say what changed. Use a number only when you have a real measurement and can explain what it measures; otherwise describe the outcome qualitatively.
- Evidence: Link the repository, live project, or specific contribution if available, then link the original DEV post for the fuller account.
Keep the original post in its proper role: it can provide detail about your thinking, but it should not have to stand in for the project itself. Check that links work and that screenshots or descriptions still match the current state of the work.

Decide how many projects to feature
The daily.dev guide suggests three to five flagship projects as a practical way to make the strongest evidence easy to find. Treat that as editorial advice, not a universal hiring rule. A smaller set of relevant, inspectable case studies can be more useful than a long list of links without context. Choose the number that lets you show the range of work relevant to your audience without weakening the evidence.

Connect DEV.to, GitHub, and your portfolio
DEV can remain the home for longer explanations, while each portfolio project entry points to the matching post and to the code, demo, or contribution it discusses. You can make those connections on an existing portfolio site; a custom API integration is optional.
Examples illustrate different approaches rather than requirements. Rinaldi’s 2021 tutorial combines DEV and GitHub information in a portfolio site, but its specific API and deployment instructions should not be assumed current. The Devolio repository documents another pattern, with portfolio and blog pages, GitHub project metadata, and RSS-fed posts. These examples show ways to bring work and writing together; a set of manually maintained links can do the same job.

Make claims the evidence can support
Be precise about what you built, what others contributed, and what the project achieved. Portfolio guidance and examples can help structure evidence, but they do not establish that a particular portfolio format or number of projects leads to a job. A DEV Community article describing reviewers’ preferences is anecdotal, not a controlled survey or hiring study. Present your work clearly and let the inspectable evidence speak for itself.
