On most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks and turn on Data Roaming. Before enabling it abroad, check that your carrier permits roaming on your plan and what it may cost: the phone switch allows roaming data, but it does not activate a roaming plan or guarantee service.
Turn data roaming on or off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then Mobile Networks.
- Switch Data Roaming on to allow data use while roaming, or off to prevent it.
Samsung UK gives this path in its support article, updated June 5, 2026. If the switch is greyed out, enable mobile data first: go to Settings > Connections > Data usage > Mobile data, then return to Mobile Networks.

Samsung defines data roaming as “when your phone uses a mobile network that is not owned by your network provider to send and receive data.” It most commonly comes into play when you are abroad. The setting controls the phone’s ability to use roaming data; your carrier must also allow roaming for your device and plan.

Menu names and locations can vary by Galaxy model, software version, region, carrier, and network. Samsung’s US guidance lists possible labels including International data roaming, Data roaming, Data roaming access, and Roaming state. If you cannot find the control, search Settings for “roaming” or check instructions for your specific device and carrier.

Check costs and plan eligibility before switching it on
Roaming charges depend on your carrier, plan, and destination; Samsung’s support guidance does not establish a universal price. Contact your carrier or review its current terms before travel to confirm that roaming is available for your destination, whether it must be activated, what allowance or pass applies, and any price, duration, speed, or fair-use conditions. Do not assume that having Data Roaming switched on means roaming is included in your plan.
If mobile data does not work abroad
Work through these checks in order, starting with settings and account eligibility before changing network configuration.

- Check both data switches. Confirm that Mobile data and Data Roaming are on.
- Confirm carrier authorization. Ask your carrier whether your particular plan and device are enabled for roaming in the destination, and check your remaining data allowance.
- Check signal, then restart. Make sure the phone has cellular coverage and restart it. Install available software updates if the connection still fails.
- Choose the correct data SIM on a dual-SIM phone. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Mobile data and select the line intended for data.
- Try later network checks if needed. Samsung India’s mobile-data troubleshooting guidance suggests checking that network mode is set to automatic and, if necessary, resetting the APN. Labels and available options vary by device and software.
- Reset network settings only as a later step. This can help with persistent connection problems, but it also resets saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings. Check your model’s instructions before proceeding.
