- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap your profile, then All services.
- Under Personal & device safety, tap Motion assist.
You can also search for Motion assist in Settings. Labels may vary slightly by language or localization. Motion assist requires Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play services, according to Google Android Help. Google’s September 2026 Android announcement lists the feature as globally available in all languages, but compatibility and rollout can still vary by device. If the setting is missing, check your Android version and search Settings again.
How do I turn Motion assist on or off?
Turn on automatic activation
On the Motion assist settings page, switch on Start in a moving vehicle. The phone will use vehicle-motion detection to show the bubbles automatically. Google cautions that the device may not always recognize that it is in a moving vehicle.

Use the Quick Settings tile for manual control
From Motion assist settings, tap Add tile to Quick Settings and choose a Small tile or Large tile. You can also add it through the Quick Settings edit menu. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the tile to control Motion assist manually. Keeping the tile available gives you a way to activate the feature when automatic detection does not start it.
Turn it off after it starts automatically
When Motion assist activates automatically, a silent notification appears. Tap that notification to turn the feature off for that session.

Can I change the bubbles’ color, shape, or transparency?
Yes. On the Motion assist settings page, tap Customize. Google documents these appearance controls, with a live preview on the customization page:

- Opacity: make the bubbles darker or more see-through.
- Color theme: choose from options such as red, yellow, green, or blue.
- Shape: choose among bubble shapes.
- Randomization: switch on or off changes to bubble color and shape every few seconds.

What Motion assist does—and when not to use it
Motion assist displays small visual bubbles along the screen edges. They move in response to vehicle motion detected by the phone’s sensors, such as turning, speeding up, or braking. The feature may make phone use during travel more comfortable, but it is not a guaranteed way to prevent or cure motion sickness.
Use it as a passenger, not while driving. Google’s September 2026 Android announcement says Motion assist may not work for everyone, and that a small percentage of users may experience worse symptoms. Stop using it if you feel discomfort, and do not use it in situations that require your full attention for safety.
