The simplest route is a dashboard that loads in the Kindle’s built-in Experimental Browser; more customizable setups can use a server to send rendered images to the Kindle, often with a jailbreak. Start by identifying your Paperwhite generation and firmware, because older browsers and model-specific compatibility are the main limits.
Choose a setup that fits your Kindle and your needs
These approaches differ in setup effort, flexibility, and how the display gets its content. A browser dashboard is the easiest place to start. Server-rendered images and service integrations offer more control, but add maintenance and compatibility requirements.

None of these choices guarantees that a particular Paperwhite, firmware version, or online service will work. Check the project’s compatibility information and try the least invasive route first.
Try a browser-only dashboard first
Amazon’s Paperwhite user guide documents an Experimental Browser with Wi-Fi access, URL entry, bookmarks, and support for JavaScript, SSL, and cookies. It does not support media plug-ins, and the guide describes its own Paperwhite generation rather than guaranteeing compatibility with every model or today’s websites. ReKindle is a browser-based dashboard project that offers calendar, tasks, RSS, weather, and other functions. Its documentation describes a legacy build for some older devices. It can be opened in the Kindle browser without installation or a jailbreak, but that does not mean every feature will load on every Paperwhite. Check ReKindle’s project and compatibility information.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and open its Experimental Browser. The exact menu labels can vary by model and software version.
- Enter the dashboard’s URL and see whether the page loads, remains legible in grayscale, and presents the information you need.
- Test the specific functions you plan to use—such as calendar, weather, or tasks—rather than assuming that a page loading means every feature works.
- If it works reliably, bookmark the page and position the Kindle upright at your desk. A stand is optional; it is not part of the software setup.
This route keeps setup simple, but you have less control over how the browser handles a site and its updates. Older browsers may not support modern web features, and an e-ink screen is better suited to mostly static information than fast-moving, highly interactive content.

Use server-rendered images when the browser is the bottleneck
A server-rendered setup moves the demanding work off the Kindle: a server opens or generates a dashboard, converts it into a grayscale image, and makes that image available for the Kindle to download. This can sidestep some browser-rendering limits, but it does not remove the need to set up and maintain the server and Kindle-side software.

Because the result is an image, think of this as a refreshed display, not a full tablet-like interface. Consider how often the information needs to update, whether you need to interact with it, and whether you can keep the server available.
Consider integrations only if you want more control
Projects that combine services can show more tailored information, but usually ask for more work than a browser dashboard. For example, a Kindle Paperwhite 3 project describes displaying Google Calendar and Todoist tasks, with a server, API credentials, a jailbreak, device software, and scheduled refresh configuration. Paperframe describes calendar and photo displays for jailbroken Kindles, with stated testing on 6th- and 7th-generation Paperwhites. It uses server-generated scripts and a sleep interval. Its maintainers say battery life on tested devices can last “up to 2 months”; that is a project-specific claim, not a general expectation for other models or setups. Read Paperframe’s documentation.
A May 2026 personal walkthrough describes a 7th-generation Kindle setup using a jailbreak, KOReader, a TRMNL plugin, and a self-hosted server for weather, calendar, schedules, and other content. The author reports no additional cost because the hardware was already owned; that individual experience does not establish what another setup will cost. See the walkthrough and its configuration.

Check these details before jailbreaking
Jailbreaking and device software are model- and firmware-dependent. The project examples do not establish one method that is safe or compatible for every Paperwhite. Before changing the device, identify its generation and firmware, then confirm that the project explicitly supports that combination and that you can follow its current instructions.
- Compatibility: Does the project name your exact Paperwhite generation and firmware?
- Data and credentials: Does the setup require calendar or task-service API credentials, and where will those credentials and personal data be stored or sent? The existence of an integration alone does not establish its privacy practices.
- Refresh and sleep: How often does the display update, and does the Kindle sleep between updates? More frequent refreshes or keeping the device awake can affect power use.
- Ongoing upkeep: Are you prepared to maintain a server, Wi-Fi connection, scheduled jobs, and Kindle-side software?
- Recovery: Read the project’s installation and recovery instructions before making changes. Do not assume steps for one Paperwhite generation apply to another.
Set realistic expectations for a desk display
A Paperwhite can make a quiet, low-distraction information display, especially for content that changes periodically rather than continuously. The grayscale screen suits text and simple layouts, but it is not a color monitor, and the browser may not handle modern sites. A server-rendered approach can make complex content easier to display at the cost of added infrastructure; a browser dashboard avoids that infrastructure when it works on the device.
