You can use an old Android phone as a computer webcam if it offers a built-in webcam mode or can connect through a compatible phone app and computer client. First check the phone’s USB options and your computer’s operating system; Android 14 QPR1 or later does not, by itself, guarantee that a particular handset has native webcam mode.
Choose the setup that works with your phone and computer
Start with the phone’s make and model, its Android version, and the computer’s operating system. Then check these options in order:

- Built-in Android webcam: Try this if the phone exposes a webcam option in its USB settings. Android’s platform documentation describes webcam support for devices running Android 14 QPR1 or higher, which operate as USB Video Class (UVC) webcams for compatible computers. That version threshold is not a guarantee that every manufacturer enabled the feature on every handset. Android platform documentation.
- Manufacturer software: Check the phone maker’s instructions for a computer-camera feature. For example, Motorola documents Smart Connect Video for using a phone camera with Zoom or Google Meet on a PC. The feature name and availability are manufacturer-specific. Motorola’s instructions.
- Third-party app and computer client: If neither option is available, consider Camo or DroidCam. Both document USB and Wi-Fi connection workflows, but their setup and computer requirements differ. Check the vendor’s current compatibility information before installing.
Try the phone’s built-in USB webcam mode
Check the cable and USB options
Use a USB cable that carries data, not one that only charges. Check the connector types on both phone and computer before choosing a cable; older Android phones do not all use the same port. - Connect the phone to the computer with the data-capable cable.
- Open the phone’s USB connection options when prompted. Look for a webcam mode or equivalent camera option and select it. Menu names vary by phone.
- Open the meeting or recording app on the computer, go to its video settings, and choose the camera source provided by the phone.
- Check the preview before joining a call or starting a recording.
If the phone has Android 14 QPR1 or later but no webcam option, check the manufacturer’s support information for that exact model. The Android platform documentation describes the feature, but the handset maker determines whether it is available on a particular device.

Check for a feature from your phone’s manufacturer
Some manufacturers provide their own computer connection rather than relying on Android’s built-in USB webcam mode. On supported Motorola setups, the manufacturer’s instructions say to select Smart Connect Video as the camera in the computer’s video settings for Zoom or Google Meet. Follow the maker’s instructions for your model; do not expect that Motorola label or workflow on other brands.
Use a phone app and computer client if needed
Camo: USB or Wi-Fi on Windows or Mac
Camo’s documented Android workflow uses Camo Camera on the phone and Camo Studio on a Windows or Mac computer. Its guide covers USB and Wi-Fi connections: Wi-Fi pairing uses a QR code, while USB setup depends on the computer. Install the phone app and desktop client, follow the vendor’s instructions for the chosen connection, and select the Camo camera source in the video settings of your meeting or recording app. Camo’s Android setup guide.

DroidCam: USB or Wi-Fi, with extra USB setup
DroidCam also documents USB and Wi-Fi workflows. For an Android USB connection, its help instructions call for enabling USB debugging; computer drivers may also be needed. DroidCam lists Windows 10 or later as the minimum for its current Windows client, so check its current requirements if your computer runs an older version of Windows. USB debugging and driver installation are additional setup steps, not prerequisites to assume for every connection method. If you prefer not to use them, check whether Wi-Fi is supported by the app and your devices.

Troubleshoot a missing or unusable camera feed
- The computer does not detect the phone: Confirm that the cable supports data, try the phone’s USB options again, and check the phone maker’s instructions. A charge-only cable will not meet Google’s documented requirement for the Pixel workflow.
- No built-in webcam choice appears: Check the exact handset’s support information. An Android version of 14 QPR1 or later alone does not establish that the manufacturer enabled native webcam mode.
- The third-party app does not connect over USB: Follow that app’s setup guide. Depending on the app and host, USB debugging or computer drivers may be required.
- The phone connects but the meeting app shows another camera: Open the destination app’s video settings and choose the source exposed by the phone feature or companion software.
- The computer or phone is too old for an app: Verify the vendor’s current operating-system and device requirements before relying on that workflow.
