Choose a frame that works as a thumbnail
Scrub through the video in an editor or player that can export a still image. Look for a frame that remains understandable when shown small: the subject should be visible, the action or topic should be clear, and the image should accurately represent the video. Avoid a frame where motion blur, a transition, closed eyes, or an awkward expression makes the subject hard to recognize.

A frame is a starting point, not a requirement to use the image unchanged. If needed, crop or resize it to fit the intended thumbnail layout while keeping the important subject visible. YouTube also offers generated thumbnail suggestions, which may be quicker if one accurately represents the video.

For a standard video, YouTube recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are among the accepted formats. These are YouTube’s recommendations and upload specifications, not a guarantee that every image will look equally clear on every screen.

Check the file-size limit for the route you will use: YouTube’s Help guidance lists up to 2 MB for mobile video thumbnail uploads and up to 50 MB for desktop uploads. If your image is too large, export it at a smaller file size while keeping it sharp enough to read at thumbnail size.
Upload the frame in YouTube Studio on a computer
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the video whose thumbnail you want to change.
- In the video details, find Thumbnail and choose Upload file.
- Select the image file you exported or captured from the video.
- Save the video details. YouTube notes that a thumbnail update can take time to appear everywhere.
If you do not want to upload your own image, choose one of the generated suggestions shown in the Thumbnail area, if available, and save your choice. Custom thumbnail uploads require a verified account; YouTube may also limit how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload per day. Those limits can vary by country or region and channel history.

Use the right process for a Short
For Shorts, YouTube recommends a vertical 9:16 image at 2160 × 3840 pixels. Custom Shorts thumbnails are currently managed in YouTube Studio on a computer, according to YouTube Help. The image and upload workflow differ from a standard video’s landscape 16:9 thumbnail, so prepare the frame vertically rather than simply uploading a landscape crop.

Know where the thumbnail may appear differently
YouTube says a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image may still appear on other surfaces. Check the video after saving, and allow time for the change to propagate before assuming the upload failed.

Follow YouTube’s thumbnail rules
A custom thumbnail must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content among reasons a thumbnail may be rejected and may lead to enforcement. Choose an image that represents the video without misleading or policy-violating material.
Compare thumbnail options with Test & compare
If you want to compare alternatives rather than choose a single image by instinct, YouTube’s Test & compare feature can test up to three thumbnail versions for eligible videos. It is available in Studio on computers and requires advanced features. YouTube lists public long-form videos and podcast episodes as potentially eligible and excludes some videos, including private and made-for-kids videos. Check the feature’s current eligibility details in YouTube Help.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot see “Upload file” or the custom thumbnail option: confirm that the account is verified and that the channel has not reached a daily upload limit. YouTube says limits may vary by region and channel history.
- The image is rejected or will not upload: check that it uses an accepted image format and that its file size is within the limit for your upload route—2 MB on mobile or 50 MB on desktop, according to YouTube Help.
- The thumbnail looks cropped or awkward: check the aspect ratio. A standard video recommendation is 16:9; Shorts use a vertical 9:16 workflow. Keep essential details away from the edges so cropping on a particular surface is less likely to hide them.
- The old thumbnail still appears: YouTube says changes can take time to appear. Wait, then check again; for vertical videos, also account for the possibility that YouTube displays an automatically generated 4:5 image on certain surfaces.
- YouTube rejects the image: review the Community Guidelines and replace content that may be sexually provocative, hateful, violent, or harmful or dangerous.
