For plain, portable character art, use jp2a to convert a supported image and save the output as a text file. A typical command is jp2a --width=80 photo.jpg > photo-ascii.txt. On macOS and Linux, a third-party project also documents a feature-rich setup using ImageMagick, jp2a, and chafa. The available documentation does not establish a complete Windows installation path for these tools, so Windows users should not assume the Mac or Linux commands apply unchanged.
Choose the kind of ASCII art you want
Classic ASCII art uses ordinary text characters and is the better choice when you want an output file that can be opened or shared as text. Terminal-art tools can use color or Unicode characters for a richer display, but the result depends on the terminal and is not equivalent to plain, universally portable text.

| Option | What it produces | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
jp2a |
ASCII text converted from supported images, including JPEG, PNG, and WebP, according to the Debian jp2a manual. | You want conventional characters and control over output dimensions. |
chafa |
Terminal graphics or ANSI/Unicode character art; the Debian chafa manual also describes animated GIF input and terminal-dependent behavior. | You want a more colorful or terminal-oriented display and can use a compatible terminal. |
ImageMagick |
Image conversion and resizing before the ASCII conversion. | Your image needs a different format or dimensions before you feed it to a converter; see ImageMagick command-line processing. |
Convert a photo to plain ASCII with jp2a
The basic workflow is to install a current jp2a build through a package route available for your operating system, run it against an image, choose a width appropriate to where the result will be displayed, and redirect the output to a text file. The following is an illustrative command pattern based on documented jp2a functionality; it has not been verified for every package build:
jp2a --width=80 photo.jpg > photo-ascii.txt
- Replace
photo.jpgwith the path to your image. The Debian manual lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP as supported formats; consult the documentation for the build you install if you use another format. - Set
--width=80to a width that fits the intended display. Check the installed program’s help if its option names differ. - Keep
> photo-ascii.txtto save the printed output to a text file. Change the filename or destination as needed. - Open the text file in a plain-text editor or display it in a terminal to inspect the result.
Width and height affect the rendered proportions. The Debian jp2a manual warns that dimensions set to match the entire terminal window can disregard the source image’s aspect ratio. Adjust dimensions deliberately rather than assuming a full-window output will preserve the photo’s shape.

Prepare the image first when needed
If the converter cannot use the input format or the image’s dimensions are inconvenient, prepare a copy with ImageMagick before converting it. Its command-line documentation covers resizing and format conversion. For example, the general form of an ImageMagick resize operation is:
magick input.jpg -resize 600x600 prepared.jpg
This example asks ImageMagick to resize the image within a 600-by-600-pixel box; it is a preparation step, not the ASCII conversion. Then point jp2a at the prepared image. Check ImageMagick’s documentation for the command syntax supported by your installed version and the file formats available in your build.

The Image2Term project documentation gives a Homebrew-based example that installs ImageMagick, jp2a, and chafa, along with a sample invocation of its script. That is a project-specific setup, not a guarantee that every package or command remains available in every environment. Check the repository and package instructions before using them.

The same Image2Term documentation provides apt examples for Ubuntu/Debian and dnf examples for Fedora/RHEL. Package names and versions can vary by distribution. If you only need plain ASCII, you can instead install jp2a through the package source available for your distribution and follow its installed manual; the Ubuntu Jammy jp2a manual notes that ImageMagick can be combined with jp2a for input conversions and image effects.

Windows
The available documentation does not establish a complete Windows installation procedure for jp2a, chafa, or Image2Term. ImageMagick’s command-line documentation explains that examples using a backslash for Linux line continuation should use a caret in Windows shell examples. That is only a shell-syntax distinction; it does not provide an installation route for the full ASCII-art workflow. Confirm that a Windows-compatible build and installation method exists for each tool you intend to use rather than copying the macOS or Linux setup commands.
Use a wrapper for more controls
Image2Term is a third-party shell-script project that describes a workflow built around ImageMagick, jp2a, and chafa. Its documentation offers controls for width, height, styles, and color modes, and allows either a jp2a or chafa engine. Those are documented project features, not evidence of a particular result for every photo. Review the project’s current instructions and dependencies at its repository before installing or running it.

Save plain text or display terminal art?
- Choose
jp2aand save its output as.txtwhen you need ordinary character text. - Choose
chafawhen you want terminal-oriented ANSI or Unicode art and your display environment supports the output. - Use ImageMagick as a preparation tool if you need to resize or convert the input before either conversion path.
Terminal color and Unicode can make the display depend on terminal capabilities, while text-file output is intended as ordinary text. The two outputs serve different purposes, so choose based on how you plan to view or share the result.
