Turn a personal coding project into a portfolio piece by making it relevant to a target role, finishing a useful slice, and showing clearly what you built and how someone can inspect it. A polished README, working demo or sample output, and honest account of your contribution usually matter more than adding features just to make the project look bigger.
Choose a project that proves something relevant
Start with the role you want, not with the project’s size. Write two sentences: one naming the problem or user your project addresses, and one explaining which skills it demonstrates for that role. Then check whether a reviewer can see those skills in a functional result.

Compare candidate projects by relevance, inspectability, ownership, completeness, and the effort needed to explain them. A small, finished tool that demonstrates a job-relevant skill can be a stronger portfolio choice than a sprawling experiment that is hard to run or understand. Make the path a reviewer will encounter dependable. Fix obvious bugs, remove abandoned experiments from the main path, choose descriptive file and directory names, keep code style consistent, and add or update tests. GitHub’s guidance on showcasing work recommends understandable code, clear naming, and testing: Using your GitHub profile to enhance your resume.

- Keep features that support the project’s stated purpose or demonstrate a relevant skill.
- Separate incomplete experiments from the main run path, or label them plainly.
- Do not add authentication, deployment infrastructure, analytics, or another framework just to increase the apparent scope. Include those only when they solve a real problem or are relevant proof of skill.
Write a README that lets a reviewer get oriented quickly
A README is often the first thing a visitor sees in a repository. GitHub says it should explain what the project does, why it is useful, how to get started, where to get help, and who maintains it. See About the repository README file.
Use concise sections that answer the questions a reviewer is likely to have:

- What it is: Describe the project in one or two plain-language sentences.
- Why it exists: Name the problem, intended user, or question behind it.
- What it does: List the main features or explain the method briefly.
- What you did: Identify your work and disclose collaborators, tutorial material, starter code, and outside contributions.
- How it works: Show the basic architecture or explain a notable technical choice and its trade-off.
- How to try it: Link a demo, screenshots, sample output, or reliable local setup steps.
- How to test it: Give the exact test command and say what the tests check.
- Limits and next steps: State known constraints and realistic improvements without presenting planned work as completed.
Prefer instructions that a visitor can follow from a clean checkout. Include prerequisites and expected output when they are needed to make setup or testing unambiguous.
Show the result in a form the project suits
Give reviewers something concrete to evaluate: a stable demo, screenshots, a short recording, sample output, or a data visualization. A visual web application may benefit from a live demo; a command-line tool, infrastructure project, or data workflow may be clearer through reproducible run instructions, sample output, or a short case study.

A deployed site is optional. GitHub Pages documents how to publish a personal or project site from a repository: GitHub Pages. Use a custom website when visual presentation is part of the role or when multiple projects need a shared landing page, not as a prerequisite for every developer.

Curate projects for the role you want
Feature a selected set rather than every experiment. GitHub recommends pinning 3–5 projects relevant to a specific job search; this is profile-curation guidance, not evidence that a particular number improves interview or hiring outcomes. Its guidance also suggests that owned projects can demonstrate skills and open-source contributions can show collaboration. For each repository, complete its description and links, improve the README, and make important code understandable.
Link directly to the repository or portfolio from your resume or profile, and check that the link opens the evidence you mean a reviewer to see. If you are pursuing different kinds of roles, choose the projects that best support the current application rather than relying on one undifferentiated collection.

Be ready to explain your decisions and contribution
Practice describing the project without relying on the README as a script. Be able to explain the original problem, alternatives you considered, one consequential technical decision, a challenge or failure, your personal contribution, and what you would change next. If you adapted a tutorial or starter project, say so and distinguish your work from what you reused.
