How to Turn a Bad LLM Answer into a Regression Test with LLMCheck

LLMCheck turns a reviewed model failure into a repeatable text-response check. See the offline example, how to challenge its criteria, and why a green verdict is not proof of application side effects.

LLMCheck turns a reviewed bad model response into a repeatable text-response check: capture the call, inspect the failure, save criteria, run the application again, then examine both the judge’s evidence and the verdict. A passing check means the judge reported no violations of those criteria; it does not prove that an external action succeeded or that captured context was actually sent to the model.

What LLMCheck’s regression loop does

LLMCheck is a Python project for capturing model calls, reviewing failures, and converting them into regression cases. In the described source revision, instrumentation wraps the synchronous OpenAI chat-completions interface. The workflow records calls in SQLite, saves reviewed criteria in YAML, and checks a fresh response when the application runs again.

  1. Capture: record a model call and its response.
  2. Review: decide what was wrong and what a compliant answer must do.
  3. Save criteria: preserve the reviewed expectations as a regression case.
  4. Replay: execute the application again and obtain a fresh response.
  5. Inspect: read the judge’s reasons and violations, not just the pass/fail result.

That human review matters: a bad answer is evidence of a failure, not automatically a good test specification. The criteria should capture the policy or behavior that must remain true without requiring one exact phrasing.

Reproduce the offline refund example

The walkthrough uses a synthetic policy and scripted responses, not customer data or a real deployment. A customer asks whether a $150 refund can arrive today. The example policy says refunds above $100 require manager approval and processing takes three to five business days. The scripted faulty answer, “Your refund is instant,” promises an unsupported outcome while omitting both requirements.

Prerequisites and scope

  • Python 3.10 or later
  • Git
  • PyYAML

The offline demonstration uses a scripted client and an injected judge, so it does not require an OpenAI API key or the OpenAI Python package. Its purpose is to show how a failure becomes a reviewed text check, not to demonstrate a live model integration.

The walkthrough pins its original offline example to version 0.3.0 and commit 6d101ae90781b8dc06965f57313445f8878cf6d6. A later merged hardening revision is described as fixing an earlier draft-generation defect and passing 58 tests; no separate date is given for that test run. These are historical details, not confirmation of the current repository state or current package release. Verify the repository and release before treating old commands or setup instructions as current.

Review criteria for meaning, not just matching words

A criterion such as requiring the phrase “manager approval” may reject a valid paraphrase. Conversely, a response can contain expected words while negating or contradicting the policy. Literal substring checks are easy to inspect, but they recognize words rather than meaning.

A model-based judge can interpret a rubric semantically, but its interpretation can still be wrong. Challenge either approach with counterexamples before relying on it:

  • A compliant paraphrase that states the approval requirement and processing window without using the exact expected phrases.
  • A negated statement that mentions the expected words but says approval is not needed.
  • An answer that includes the expected phrases yet still promises an immediate refund.

Read the saved criteria and the judge’s evidence. A green verdict alone does not show that the rubric is complete or that the judge interpreted it correctly.

What a passing check does—and does not—establish

LLMCheck checks response text. The verdict is calculated in Python from the judge’s reported violation lists: when those lists are empty, the result is a pass. If a judge overlooks a problem, that logic can produce a false pass.

A response-text pass does not establish that a database transaction committed, an advertisement was updated, or an external service accepted an action. Those outcomes need their own checks. Likewise, saving policy as captured context does not prove that the application sent that context in the model request. Test application inputs and side effects separately from the answer’s wording.

How much confidence should you place in the reported results?

The article reports an evaluation dated September 23, 2026, involving 12 OpenAI judge requests: the judge agreed with 11 of 12 authored labels and rejected one compliant answer containing a negation. Those figures describe a small, bounded evaluation; the labels were not an independent human benchmark, and they do not establish production readiness. The article calls for held-out cases and further work.

The reported 58 passing tests apply to the merged hardening revision described in the article, not necessarily to the current repository. Treat both figures as limited evidence about the revisions and cases reported, rather than as a guarantee that a new rubric, judge, model, or application will behave reliably.
