Tune an unfamiliar filament by testing one setting at a time, in a deliberate order—not by copying a temperature or flow value from another printer. OrcaSlicer’s calibration sequence is temperature, maximum volumetric speed, pressure advance, flow ratio, then retraction. Begin with the filament maker’s temperature guidance and a suitable slicer preset, then save the results in the material profile you use for that spool.
Before you calibrate: set a useful baseline
Identify the filament material and note its brand, color, and spool. Read the manufacturer’s recommended nozzle and bed temperature ranges, then choose the closest available preset for your printer and slicer. Treat that preset as a starting point: results depend on the particular printer and filament, so there is no single temperature or flow value that fits every combination.

Record the printer, nozzle, filament details, and each test result as you go. Change one variable at a time; otherwise, a better or worse print will not tell you which adjustment made the difference. OrcaSlicer describes its calibration sequence in the Calibration Guide.
1. Calibrate nozzle temperature
Start with temperature because it affects the filament’s viscosity, flow, and adhesion to the bed. Use the manufacturer’s recommended range to choose a starting point, then run a temperature test using your slicer’s calibration feature if available. Assess the test for the print qualities you need, rather than assuming a temperature recommended for another printer or brand will transfer directly.

- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Set the bed temperature according to the manufacturer’s guidance as well. This sequence focuses first on establishing workable material conditions; it does not supply universal nozzle or bed temperatures.
2. Find the maximum volumetric speed
Maximum volumetric speed is the rate at which the printer can melt and extrude the filament. Calibrating this limit after temperature helps reveal how much flow the printer can sustain under the conditions you established. If the requested flow exceeds that capacity, the printer may under-extrude.

Run the slicer’s maximum volumetric speed test and use the result for this printer-and-filament combination. A value from another machine, nozzle, or material is not a universal speed limit.
3. Calibrate pressure advance if your printer supports it
Pressure advance compensates for pressure lag in the nozzle as the toolhead accelerates and slows. When supported and calibrated, it can reduce blobs and uneven extrusion at corners. OrcaSlicer documents tower, pattern, and line tests in its Pressure Advance guide.

Check the printer and firmware before running the test or saving a value. OrcaSlicer notes that Marlin printers need Linear Advance enabled in firmware. Test variants also differ for direct-drive and Bowden extruders, so choose the one that matches your setup. Prusa’s guidance distinguishes Linear Advance on older MK2/MK3 families from Pressure Advance on specified newer families starting with firmware 5.0.0; consult the Prusa Linear Advance documentation for the relevant printer family. If the feature is not supported or enabled on your printer, do not treat a test result as a usable setting.
4. Tune flow ratio (extrusion multiplier)
Flow ratio changes extrusion proportionally. OrcaSlicer recommends a range of 0.95–1.05 as a calibration reference in its Material Flow Ratio and Pressure Advance documentation; it is not a guaranteed setting for every spool. Prusa describes extrusion multiplier as an advanced fine-tuning step and says adjustments in its calibration context are usually between 0.9 and 1.1. The right value can vary by material, color, and spool, so use a calibration test rather than selecting a number solely from either range.

Prusa documents both visual judgment and a precision approach for extrusion-multiplier calibration. Measuring tools are optional, not a prerequisite. Keep track of where the adjustment is applied: changing both the slicer multiplier and firmware flow without accounting for their combined effect can make the resulting extrusion difficult to interpret. Prusa notes that this procedure is for specific applications and filaments, not something required for every new printer from the factory.

5. Calibrate retraction last
Once temperature, volumetric speed, pressure advance where supported, and flow are established, calibrate retraction. Retraction affects extrusion during travel and is commonly tuned to address stringing. Use a test and settings appropriate to your extruder arrangement; the pressure-advance test documentation also distinguishes direct-drive and Bowden variants. Avoid changing retraction earlier in the sequence, because the other material and extrusion settings can affect how later results should be interpreted.

Save the results in the material profile
When the tests are complete, save the calibrated values in the filament or material profile used for that spool. OrcaSlicer documents flow ratio and pressure advance as filament settings. Keep the profile identifiable by material and, when useful, brand, color, or spool so you can repeat the setup or compare it with another roll. The test record should include the printer and nozzle as well as the final values.
If the calibration still prints poorly
Before repeatedly adjusting the material profile, check that the printer and firmware support the setting you are testing and that the printer is in sound working condition. Confirm the first layer and baseline print conditions are reasonable, then return to the calibration order and change only one variable at a time. This helps separate a material-profile issue from a printer or setup issue.
