What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no universal “best settings” preset for a realistic first-person shooter. The clearest setup depends on the game’s rendering, your display, your hardware, and what you need to see. Start from a stable display baseline, adjust a few settings at a time, and judge target readability and frame delivery in the game itself.
Start with a reliable display baseline
Before changing visual effects, confirm that the game is using the display you intend and a sensible resolution and aspect ratio. Native resolution is a useful first check because a non-native render or display resolution can make the whole image look soft. If the game exposes a refresh-rate selector, check that it matches an appropriate option for your display.

Menu names and available controls vary by title. Activision’s 2019 Modern Warfare PC settings guide illustrates how display mode, monitor, refresh rate, render resolution, aspect ratio, V-Sync, and frame limits can sit together under Display; it should not be treated as a current menu map for other games.

Brightness
If enemies disappear into dark areas, raise brightness modestly and compare the same shadowed scene. Electronic Arts’ current Apex Legends PC settings guidance says to “Increase slightly to improve visibility.” This is a game-specific starting point, not a universal numeric calibration. Keep increasing only while dark targets become easier to distinguish without washing out bright areas or flattening scene contrast.

Motion blur
Turn off world, weapon, or camera motion blur as an initial competitive-visibility test if movement makes opponents or attacks harder to track. NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 PC graphics guide says players in competitive PvP Crucible matches may wish to disable Motion Blur for maximum visibility of enemies and attacks. Some games expose separate world and weapon blur toggles; Activision’s Modern Warfare guide is one example. NVIDIA reported no performance impact from the Destiny 2 toggle in its tested context, so treat this primarily as a visibility choice.
Field of view
A wider field of view shows more of the surroundings, but makes distant enemies appear smaller. Change FOV in small increments and compare peripheral awareness against how easily you can read distant targets. EA recommends 90–110 for Apex Legends as a starting range and says 110 is common among competitive players, while noting that preference and platform matter. That range is specific to Apex Legends, not a recommendation for every FPS.

- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Reduce expensive detail selectively
When frame delivery is unstable or effects obscure opponents, test demanding options such as shadows, volumetric lighting, effects, and ambient occlusion. Lowering them can help performance, but removing every detail is not automatically clearer: some effects or shadows may help separate a target from its background. Keep settings that support readable target separation when your system can render them smoothly.

Riot Games’ graphics performance guidance likewise advises changing a few options at a time and testing before gradually raising settings to find a visual-performance balance.

Compare anti-aliasing modes in your game
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges, but some implementations can soften fine textures or small details. Do not assume that switching it off always gives the sharpest image—or that enabling it always improves visibility. Compare edge clarity, fine-detail sharpness, and image stability while moving.
The difference is game-specific: EA’s current Apex competitive-oriented recommendations list anti-aliasing as None, while NVIDIA’s Destiny 2 guide describes SMAA as clearer than FXAA in its comparisons. The Destiny 2 guide reports setting costs of 1.7 FPS for SMAA and 0.5 FPS for FXAA in its specific comparison. Those figures are not current benchmarks for other games or hardware.

Use a repeatable tuning loop
- Record a baseline. Note the current resolution, display mode, refresh rate, FOV, blur, anti-aliasing, and detail settings. Pick a repeatable practice area or gameplay situation with both shadowed and bright scenes.
- Change one setting or a small related group. For example, test motion blur separately, then compare FOV values, then adjust effects or shadows. Keeping changes limited makes it easier to tell what helped.
- Check the same scene in motion. Look for distinguishable opponents, legible distant targets, stable edges, distracting effects, and smooth, consistent frame delivery. A still screenshot alone may not reveal blur or instability during movement.
- Keep, undo, or refine the change. If visibility improves without making performance or target size unacceptable, keep it. Otherwise restore the baseline and try a smaller adjustment or a different option.
- Revisit the balance after performance changes. If lowering a setting stabilizes gameplay, test whether you can raise other details without losing that stability or making targets harder to read.
Judge settings on four axes
- Target visibility: Can you distinguish an opponent from the background?
- Image stability: Do edges shimmer, smear, or blur as you move?
- FOV versus target size: Does the extra peripheral view help more than the smaller distant targets hurt?
- Performance stability: Does the game remain smooth and consistent on your current hardware?
For anti-aliasing, add edge smoothing versus fine-detail sharpness. For shadows and effects, compare both target separation and distraction—not just a reported FPS change. Because games implement settings differently and the hardware and display change their costs, a setting that helps one player may be a poor trade for another.
