If a Zcash testnet wallet or node is not syncing, first verify that every component is actually on Testnet, then check the node before the wallet-facing service. A wallet connected through lightwalletd depends on two links—the wallet to lightwalletd and lightwalletd to its node—so a stalled screen does not necessarily mean the wallet itself is broken. Work through the checks below in order, using the reported chain, block height, and logs rather than port reachability alone.
First identify what is supposed to sync
Zcash Testnet is a separate blockchain that mimics the main network for testing. Its coins are not real ZEC and have no monetary value; a testnet wallet, node, and backend must all use the same test network. The Zcash Testnet Guide describes it as “an alternative blockchain that attempts to mimic the main Zcash network for testing purposes.”

Determine which setup you have before changing anything:
- Local full node: The wallet may rely on a node running on the same computer or local network. Node synchronization and wallet scanning are separate activities.
- Light wallet using lightwalletd: The wallet talks to a lightwalletd service, which in turn connects to a Zcash node. Either connection can be the source of the problem. lightwalletd is a bandwidth-efficient backend for mobile and other light wallets.
- Remote lightwalletd: The backend is operated elsewhere, so you may not be able to inspect its node or logs. You can still check the wallet’s network setting and ask the operator for service health, chain, height, and relevant errors.
Wallet-specific menus and error messages differ by application and version; the shared Zcash documentation does not establish a universal wallet UI path. If you need app-specific directions, note the wallet name, version, operating system, and exact message.

Check that every component is on Testnet
Confirm the selected network independently in the wallet, node, and lightwalletd configuration. A mainnet/testnet mismatch can leave a service running but connected to the wrong chain, making it appear unavailable or irrelevant to the wallet.
The documented port pairs are different for the two networks. These are Zcash Documentation values; the page does not state a publication year.
| Network | RPC port | P2P port |
|---|---|---|
| Testnet | 18232 | 18233 |
| Mainnet | 8232 | 8233 |
The Zcash troubleshooting guide identifies these port values. A port number by itself does not prove that the service is healthy or on the intended chain; verify the chain and block height reported by the service as well.
If you switch a lightwalletd backend between Testnet and mainnet, restart lightwalletd after changing the zebrad network. The lightwalletd project README explicitly calls for a restart after that network change.

Verify the node before diagnosing the wallet
- Start the node on the intended network. Check its configuration and logs to make sure it is using Testnet rather than mainnet.
- Wait for node synchronization to complete. The official Zcash setup guide says to start the node on the selected network and wait for it to finish syncing before proceeding.
- Check peer connectivity. If the node has trouble finding peers, verify outbound connectivity and local firewall policy for the selected network’s P2P port—18233 on Testnet. Do not treat an open port as proof that synchronization is complete.
- Keep RPC private. Do not expose the RPC port to the public internet as a shortcut. The lightwalletd project says the RPC port should not be exposed beyond localhost.
Once the node is synced, compare its current height with the height reported by the wallet-facing service. If the node itself is behind or cannot connect to peers, resolve that first; changing wallet settings will not make a lagging backend current.
Check lightwalletd and its connection to the node
For a wallet using lightwalletd, check both sides of the service: the wallet-to-lightwalletd connection and lightwalletd-to-node connection. The project documents a GetLightdInfo gRPC health request for this purpose. A successful response reports the chain name, block height, and backend node version; the documentation says it also confirms the gRPC frontend and its connection to zebrad.
Compare the response with the network you intend to use and the node’s status. A Testnet wallet receiving a mainnet chain name, or a service height that does not track its node, points to a network selection or backend issue rather than proving that the wallet’s local installation is damaged. Use the lightwalletd project documentation for the health-request details appropriate to your setup.

lightwalletd can respond while its block cache is still filling. In the project’s documented setup, the first cache synchronization takes about an hour, and block fetches are slower until it finishes. That is a configuration-specific estimate, not a universal time guarantee.

If logs show CORRUPTION, the project says lightwalletd checks cache consistency and repairs it by redownloading blocks from the backend. Its setup guide also says the cache can be regenerated from the node: stop the server, delete the lightwalletd block cache, and start it again to trigger a download. This applies to the server’s block cache only; it is not a reason to delete wallet files, keys, or seed data.
Use node logs to diagnose common failures
The official Zcash troubleshooting guide describes several specific errors that can look like a stalled node:
- Missing
sprout-verifying.keyparameter: Required proof parameters have not been fetched. For Debian package installs, the guide documentszcash-fetch-params; for source builds, it documents./zcutil/fetch-params.sh. Use the command matching how your node was installed. std::bad_allocor related runtime errors: These indicate memory exhaustion. The guide notes this can occur particularly during mining or shielded transactions.- Long response after importing a key: An imported-key scan may immediately search the blockchain for related transactions, delaying the command response. A delay during that scan is not, by itself, evidence that the node has frozen.
For a lightwalletd issue, inspect its logs as well as the node logs. A cache error, backend connection failure, or mismatch between reported chain and height helps distinguish a service problem from a wallet-side display or connection issue.

Account for zcashd’s support status in 2026
If the stalled node uses zcashd, check the current lifecycle notice before investing time in an old setup. Zcash’s zcashd deprecation notice says support halted at block height 3,417,100 on July 18, 2026, and states that “zcashd is deprecated and will not support NU6.3.” The notice lists Testnet NU6.3 activation as July 4, 2026 at block 4,134,000.

The same notice advises users who do not need the zcashd wallet to migrate to Zebra. Those who depend on the zcashd wallet are advised to begin testing migration of wallet.dat to Zallet. Check the official notice and current release guidance before following migration or activation instructions, since network and support details can change.
Prepare useful details before asking for help
Collect enough information to identify which connection or component is failing, but do not share credentials or wallet secrets. The Zcash troubleshooting guide asks users to describe what they tried and what failed when escalating.
- Wallet name and version, operating system, and the exact displayed error.
- Whether the wallet, node, and backend are configured for Testnet.
- Node implementation and version, configured RPC and P2P endpoints, current node height, and peer count.
- Current wallet height and whether it connects to a local or remote lightwalletd.
- The
GetLightdInforesponse, if available, and relevant excerpts from node and lightwalletd logs.
Redact seed phrases, private keys, RPC passwords, and private user data from logs and screenshots. Never send a wallet seed phrase to someone offering sync support.
The lightwalletd repository notes that the project is under active development and that not all recent changes have received external audit or ECC security review. Consider that caveat when choosing a backend or assessing the assurances you expect from it.
