YouTube buffering on Vi does not, by itself, prove packet loss or a carrier fault. Compare the same video on another connection, check whether other services also stall on Vi, and then test whether lowering playback quality helps. These checks can narrow down whether the likely problem is YouTube, your phone or app, or the mobile connection.
What buffering can—and cannot—tell you
Buffering, stuttering, quality dropping, and playback errors are symptoms, not diagnoses. A speed test measures throughput at a particular moment; it does not show that a stream is stable, establish packet loss, or prove that Vi is responsible. To call it packet loss, you need a measurement that actually supports that conclusion—and even a ping or traceroute can be affected by routing or deprioritized ICMP replies.

Use the checks below to compare conditions before changing settings. YouTube also recommends trying a different internet connection when troubleshooting buffering (YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guide).

Record the conditions first
Before changing anything, note the date and time, approximate location, phone make and model, operating system, YouTube app or browser, cellular network mode, signal indication, selected playback quality, and whether the video is live or on demand. Record whether other apps and websites stall, too. If the issue comes and goes, repeat the same observations at another time.

Compare YouTube and other connections
- Replay the same video over Wi-Fi or another available internet connection. Keep the device and video the same where possible. If YouTube recommends changing networks, this is the most direct comparison.
- While on Vi, try other services. Note whether unrelated apps or websites also stall.
- Try another YouTube video or, if practical, another browser or device. This helps check whether the trouble follows one video, one app, or one phone.
| Observation | What it may suggest | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube alone has trouble; other apps work on Vi | The YouTube app, a particular video, or the route to YouTube may be involved. | Reopen or update the app, try another video or browser, and compare over Wi-Fi. |
| Several services stall on Vi but work over Wi-Fi | The mobile connection, local radio conditions, or congestion becomes more plausible; this does not prove packet loss. | Repeat at another time or location, record the conditions, and check with Vi. |
| The same YouTube video fails on different devices and connections | A problem with that video or the YouTube service becomes more plausible. | Try another video and check again later. |
| The problem occurs on only one phone | The device, app, settings, or SIM/device configuration may be involved. | Update and restart, check YouTube’s data permissions, and review carrier settings. |
These patterns are clues rather than definitive tests. A YouTube-specific delivery path can complicate the comparison.

Test whether playback quality is the constraint
Manually select a lower resolution in YouTube and see whether playback becomes steadier. YouTube publishes the following approximate sustained-speed guidance for common resolutions. These are not packet-loss thresholds, guarantees, or measurements of Vi’s performance.
| YouTube resolution | Approximate sustained speed guidance from YouTube |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
If a lower quality stabilizes playback, available throughput may be limiting the stream. Record the selected resolution and, if you run a speed test, when and how you ran it. One speed-test result cannot establish consistent performance over the duration of a video. See YouTube’s video error troubleshooting guidance.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Check the app, phone, and mobile connection
Refresh the app or browser
- Close and reopen YouTube, or reload the video in your browser.
- Check for an app or browser update, then restart the phone.
- On Android, consider clearing YouTube’s cache through the phone’s system settings.
- Confirm that mobile data is allowed for YouTube. Inspect DNS settings only if you have reason to think they were changed.
These are app and device checks, not evidence that the carrier caused the problem.
Refresh and verify the Vi connection
- Briefly toggle airplane mode or restart the mobile connection, then repeat the comparison.
- Confirm that your account has data available.
- Check whether the issue occurs only at one location or time. A result that changes across locations or times is useful context, not proof of a particular network fault.
Vi’s data and calls troubleshooting guidance directs customers to its network troubleshooting guide, notes speed checking through the Vi app, and lists support routes. Contact Vi through the current options on its site and ask whether there is a local incident or network issue. Share your observations; do not assume support can confirm or repair a fault from a single test.

- WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
- Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
- True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³

- Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
Change APN settings only if there is a reason
Do not start by editing the Access Point Name (APN). If mobile data configuration appears incorrect, verify the current instructions for both your device and Vi before changing it. Vi’s APN FAQ lists “www” for Android and “iphone” for iPhone, but its menu paths and guidance may not match every current operating system or device. Treat those values as a carrier reference to check, not a universal streaming fix.

Do not treat a single ping or traceroute as conclusive evidence about YouTube traffic: routing differences and deprioritized ICMP responses can affect the result. Vi’s article on improving mobile internet speed discusses general measures such as resetting network settings. Consider such a reset only after easier checks; review the phone’s reset prompt and back up Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings first, since saved settings may be removed.
Or let it run in the cloud
