What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First identify which feature is failing: Windows Backup restores selected settings during setup on a new or reinstalled PC; OneDrive syncs selected folders; System Restore reverses certain local system changes; and point-in-time restore rolls back the system drive. These are different workflows, with different account requirements and risks.
Identify the backup or restore feature first
Before changing settings, decide which outcome you need. Windows Backup is for carrying selected preferences and app information to another Windows device. Its selected folder backup uses OneDrive. System Restore is for undoing a local system or software change, while point-in-time restore—if available on your device—is a broader rollback.

| Feature | What it protects or restores | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup | Selected Windows settings and app information; selected folders sync through OneDrive | Restoring settings and preferences during setup on another PC | The consumer app requires a personal Microsoft account; folder backup depends on OneDrive storage and sync health. Microsoft’s Windows Backup guide |
| OneDrive sync | Selected files and folders | Accessing synced files on another device | Changes and deletions can propagate across synced devices; sync is not a complete system image. Microsoft’s OneDrive sync guidance |
| System Restore | System files, registry settings, and installed programs | Undoing a recent system configuration or software change | It does not restore Windows Backup settings to a new PC. Review the affected programs and available restore points. Microsoft’s System Restore guide |
| Point-in-time restore | The system drive, including files, apps, and settings at a selected snapshot | A more comprehensive rollback, when supported and available | Changes after the snapshot can be lost. Prepare the BitLocker key, free space, and power connection. Microsoft’s point-in-time restore guidance |
| External or network drive backup | A local copy of files | Large file collections or situations without internet access | It is a separate backup destination and will not repair Microsoft-account settings sync. Microsoft’s backup guidance |
Windows Backup restoration is offered during Windows setup. It is not the same as rolling back the current installation to a restore point.
Why won’t Windows settings backup turn on?
On the PC you want to back up, open the Windows Backup app, or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Check that the backup status is healthy and the categories you need are selected. The available settings can include apps, accessibility, account and Wi-Fi information, personalization, language preferences and dictionary, and other Windows settings. The Windows Backup settings catalog describes the categories.

- Check the account type. The consumer Windows Backup app is designed for personal Microsoft accounts. Microsoft says work or school accounts do not work with that app; an organization may provide a different, IT-managed option. Sign in with the personal Microsoft account you intend to use when restoring the backup. Microsoft’s Windows Backup guide
- Check the selected categories. Make sure the relevant settings or preferences are enabled. Personalization backup requires OneDrive sign-in and available storage. Some settings that were backed up previously may appear as already backed up with their toggle unavailable.
- Read the status or error message. Microsoft lists OneDrive sign-in problems, insufficient storage, and other OneDrive issues among possible reasons Windows Backup reports an error. Address the specific reported issue rather than repeatedly switching backup on and off.
- Check device management. Work policies or device configuration can affect which features and settings are available. If this is an organization-managed PC, ask IT which backup method is supported.
Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance describes 5 GB of free OneDrive storage for a Microsoft account; additional storage is available to purchase. That capacity is shared with other OneDrive content, so check available space before enabling folder backup.
Why is OneDrive not backing up Desktop or Documents?
Windows Backup’s folder options rely on OneDrive. It can select Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music for OneDrive folder sync. If a folder is missing or stops uploading, troubleshoot OneDrive rather than treating the issue as a Windows settings toggle.
- Confirm OneDrive is signed in to the account where you expect the files to be stored.
- Check available OneDrive storage; a full account can prevent further uploads.
- Look for a separate OneDrive sync warning or error and resolve it. Microsoft explains how OneDrive sync works and how changes propagate in its sync guidance.
- Verify the folder is selected for backup in Windows Backup or OneDrive settings. The exact controls can vary by Windows build and account configuration.
Sync keeps selected content available across devices, but it is not an independent historical backup: edits and deletions can sync too. For large collections or places without reliable internet, Microsoft also describes external or network drives as backup destinations. See Microsoft’s backup destination guidance.
How do I restore my Windows settings on a new PC?
Restore the settings backup during Windows setup on the new or reinstalled PC. Use the same personal Microsoft account that was used to create the backup. Microsoft says Windows identifies available backups during setup and offers the restore option. Windows Backup setup and restore steps

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Start Windows setup and sign in with the original personal Microsoft account.
- When Windows offers an available backup, select the backup you want to use.
- If backups from several PCs appear, choose More options and select the correct device backup.
- Complete setup and allow Windows to apply the selected preferences and app information.
- For files, sign in to OneDrive with the account that synced them. App pins can be restored; Microsoft Store apps can be restored from their pins, while other apps may link to an installer rather than reinstall automatically.
Why isn’t my Windows backup showing up?
For Windows Backup settings, the key checks are the account and the setup stage: use the personal Microsoft account associated with the backup, and look for the restore offer during Windows setup. A work or school account is not supported by the consumer app described in Microsoft’s guide. If multiple device backups are available, use More options to select the intended PC.
For synced files, check OneDrive separately: sign in to the original account and verify the expected files are present there. OneDrive files and Windows settings backups are related through the account but are not the same backup. If neither the account nor setup explains the missing option, the exact cause depends on the Windows build, account type, management policies, and what screen or error you see.

Microsoft says System Restore does not affect personal files. It rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs to a selected restore point, so software or configuration changes made after that point may be undone. Before choosing a point, review which programs will be affected. Microsoft’s System Restore guide

Point-in-time restore is broader. It reverts the system drive, including files, apps, settings, passwords, certificates, and keys; changes made after the chosen point are lost. It does not affect files stored in cloud services such as OneDrive. Do not treat it as equivalent to System Restore or to restoring Windows Backup during setup. Prepare before using Windows Recovery Environment
If you are starting a recovery action from Windows Recovery Environment, check these prerequisites before proceeding:
- Have the BitLocker recovery key available. Device encryption may require it to access the drive. Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance explains recovery options.
- Connect the PC to power. Microsoft warns not to turn off the computer during point-in-time restore.
- Check free disk space. A restore can fail if there is not enough space.
- After rollback, check Windows Update. A recent security update may have been reverted, so review available updates once Windows starts normally.
When a local or legacy backup is a better fit
If the problem is access to a large set of files or backing up without an internet connection, an external hard drive or network location can be a better destination than OneDrive. File History is another separate, legacy Windows route: Microsoft documents reconnecting its drive and starting a backup through Control Panel. File History drive reconnection steps
These approaches protect files through a separate destination; they do not fix a Microsoft-account sign-in, settings-sync, or Windows Backup restore problem. Microsoft’s support pages cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but availability and controls can vary by edition, build, and device management. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that lifecycle date does not apply to Windows 11. Microsoft’s lifecycle and backup guidance
