Start by identifying whether your child uses a parent-managed WhatsApp account or a teen account with parental controls; their alert categories differ. On the parent’s phone, open WhatsApp and check Settings > Parental controls, select the child or teen, then go to More options > Manage notifications. If the relevant alert is enabled, use the symptom—no push, a missing group alert, or a silent alert—to narrow down the next check.
First identify which parental-control setup you use
WhatsApp has separate experiences for parent-managed accounts and teen accounts with optional parental controls. The parent and child or teen accounts must be linked for the controls to work. If you are unsure which setup applies, check the account selected in the parent’s Parental controls area before changing notification settings. WhatsApp describes the two experiences in its guides to parent-managed accounts and teen parental controls.

If Parental controls or the expected account is missing, first confirm that setup and account linking are complete and that WhatsApp is up to date on both devices. WhatsApp says these experiences are rolling out gradually, so they may not yet be available in every region. Updating the app is its stated recommendation while rollout continues; reinstalling WhatsApp or buying a third-party monitoring app is not an established fix.

- On the parent’s phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Parental controls.
- Select the child or teen account.
- Open More options > Manage notifications.
- Check that the category matching the activity you expect is enabled.
The available categories depend on the account type. WhatsApp’s parent-managed account guidance lists critical alerts, chats and contacts, groups, disappearing messages, and account updates. It says, “Notifications for critical alerts are always turned on.” That statement applies to parent-managed accounts; it should not be assumed to describe teen controls. For teens, WhatsApp lists contacts, groups, and account updates. An activity outside the listed categories may not generate an alert.

WhatsApp’s instructions are in its pages on activity alerts for parent-managed accounts and teen parental controls. You can also review activity in the Parental controls area; alerts are not the only way to see the activity information WhatsApp makes available.
Match the symptom to the likely notification problem
No alert appears while WhatsApp is closed
This points to push delivery rather than a missing sound. Check that WhatsApp has permission to send notifications on the parent’s device, and review the device’s background-data and battery settings, which can affect delivery when the app is not open.

Only group-related alerts are missing
Check whether the relevant group is muted and whether group notifications are enabled. If other categories arrive normally, focus on the group’s notification settings and the Groups category in Manage notifications.

If the alert is visible, delivery is working. Check WhatsApp’s notification tone, the device’s sound level, and whether Do Not Disturb or Focus is suppressing sound.

The expected notice or badge is absent while WhatsApp is open
Recheck the relevant category under Manage notifications and consider whether the event belongs to an alert type WhatsApp lists for that account. WhatsApp’s general notification guidance also covers in-app notification behavior.
Alerts are missing only in WhatsApp Web
Check that your browser allows notifications for web.whatsapp.com. A browser permission problem is distinct from the parental-control category setting in the phone app.

WhatsApp’s general notification troubleshooting guide covers Android, iOS, Web, Windows, and Mac. The relevant device menu labels can vary by operating-system version and device, so use the setting categories above rather than assuming one tap sequence applies to every phone.
Know what these alerts do—and do not—show
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted. Parental activity alerts describe selected account activity, not message contents. They are not a full feed of everything a child does in WhatsApp or a way for a parent to read chats.
