Start by identifying what is wrong: incorrect characters usually point toward encoding or locale handling, empty boxes often mean the selected font lacks the needed glyphs, and broken marks or letter shaping may involve Wine’s or the application’s text-rendering path. These are diagnostic clues, not proof. Check host font coverage, the exact Wine prefix, and the affected application before changing locale or installing fonts.
What kind of text problem are you seeing?
“Unicode issue” can describe different failures. Note the exact text and whether it was typed, copied, read from a filename, or displayed in the application interface; where it came from can help distinguish an encoding problem from a rendering problem.

- Question marks or unrelated characters: consider encoding and locale handling, and check whether the application has its own language setting.
- Empty squares, boxes, or blank glyphs: first check whether an available font contains characters for the affected script.
- Separated marks, incorrect ordering, or broken joining: investigate shaping and the application’s text-rendering path as well as font coverage.
Wine developer discussion describes an Indic-script fallback problem and notes that the rendering API used by an application can matter; it is an example of a possible issue, not proof that every Wine release has the same limitation. Read the Wine-Devel discussion.
Record the environment before changing anything
Capture enough detail to compare results and report a reproducible problem:

- Wine version and how Wine was installed or packaged
- Linux or Unix distribution and version
- Application name and version
- The prefix path used to launch that application
- Host locale, including the output of
locale - Affected language or script, selected Windows font, and a sample of the characters that fail
- Whether the same text displays correctly in a native host application

Check that a host font covers the script
A font that displays Latin text may not include glyphs for Thai, Devanagari, CJK, or another script. Use your distribution’s supported font-management or package process to install a family that covers the characters you need. If the distribution’s instructions call for refreshing the font cache, do so, then check the same sample text in a native application.

There is no single font package or family that is right for every script and distribution. If the native application also shows missing glyphs, resolve the host font issue before treating Wine as the cause.

Wine prefixes are separate Windows-style environments. Make sure you are checking the prefix used by the affected launcher, rather than assuming the application uses the default ~/.wine prefix.

winecfgthrough the same Wine installation and with the same prefix as the affected application. - Check whether the Windows application explicitly selects a font, and whether that font has coverage for the affected script.
- If testing a font installed inside the prefix, use that prefix’s Windows Fonts directory. A WineHQ forum participant reported using
~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts/; this is a community-reported option, not a universal path or guarantee.
Forum reports also mention a build-specific shared Wine font directory. The applicable location and behavior depend on the prefix, Wine build, and launcher. See the WineHQ forum discussion.
Test locale without treating it as a font fix
Locale can affect language and encoding behavior, but changing it does not supply a missing glyph. In one April 2026 Wine developer-list report, changing locale did not resolve the reported font-rendering symptom; that single case is not a general test of locale settings.

If you compare locale settings, note the original value, use your host’s supported method to launch the application under the intended locale, and compare the same text under otherwise unchanged conditions. Change one variable at a time.
Find out whether the failure is host-wide, Wine-wide, or application-specific
Compare the same sample characters in a native application, a minimal Wine application such as Wine Notepad, and the target Windows application.

- Native and Wine applications both fail: revisit host font coverage and host font visibility.
- Native applications work, but several Wine applications fail: investigate the Wine build, prefix, and font fallback path.
- Only the target application fails: check its selected font and rendering method before concluding that the host lacks Unicode support.
The April 2026 developer discussion describes a reported Uniscribe fallback problem and discusses differences between text APIs, including possible hard-coded fallback names that may not be installed on Linux. This is useful implementation context, not a guarantee of a current, Wine-wide defect.
When to report the problem
If the failure persists and you can reproduce it, search Wine’s issue tracker for an existing report before filing. Include the environment details above, the exact sample characters, the affected script, what you know about font coverage, and the steps needed to reproduce the issue. Attach a crash log if the application crashes; Wine’s README recommends checking the bug database for known or fixed issues and providing a crash log when applicable.
