Build matters: CD PROJEKT RED announced Hotfix 5.00c for the Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere PC versions on October 1, 2026. If The Witcher 3 keeps crashing or closing
- Check system requirements. Compare your PC with the requirements for your installed build; do not assume a newly announced requirement already applies to every version.
- Close nonessential applications. Test with background apps shut down to reduce possible conflicts.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-verification option in your storefront’s game management settings, then test again.
- Clean-install the GPU driver. Download the appropriate driver from your GPU manufacturer before removing the current driver, then install the downloaded version. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the cleanup and installation.
- If the crash began after a driver update, try the previous driver. CD PROJEKT RED notes that an older driver can sometimes help with crashes.
These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes. CD PROJEKT RED’s crash guidance also advises checking for malware if appropriate. Avoid installing unfamiliar driver-update utilities; use the official driver source for your GPU.
If the game stutters, runs slowly, or takes too long to load
Work through the official performance checks and test after each change:
- Clean-install the graphics driver. Use your GPU maker’s driver and cleanup instructions. If the problem started immediately after updating the driver, try the previous version instead.
- Verify the game files. A damaged or incomplete file can be a reason to rule out before investigating graphics settings.
- Temporarily disable overlays. Close overlays such as Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and GOG Galaxy for a test run.
- Close other diagnostic or background tools. Temporarily exit hardware-monitoring tools and unnecessary applications.
- Test antivirus or anti-malware interference only if appropriate. CD PROJEKT RED includes these programs among items to temporarily disable while diagnosing. Treat this as a controlled test, not a permanent recommendation: restore normal protection afterward.
Record what changed and whether the symptom improved. The official performance guidance asks for a video when possible and a save file if the problem is tied to a specific location. If stutter persists with overlays and unnecessary apps closed, that alone does not establish that the GPU is at fault; the hardware, driver, build, and exact symptom all matter.

If The Witcher 3 will not launch
For a startup failure, CD PROJEKT RED’s sequence includes several checks beyond the crash and performance steps:
- Check that your PC meets the requirements for the installed game build.
- Reinstall the graphics driver using the GPU manufacturer’s instructions.
- Reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables.
- Disable unnecessary applications, particularly overlays, and try again.
- Try starting Windows in clean boot mode to check whether another program is interfering.
- If an error code appears, record it exactly and include it when contacting support.
Follow the official game-won’t-launch instructions for details on these steps. If you use Classic 1.32, check whether your installed build includes the October 2026 hotfix’s launch fix before pursuing unrelated changes.
If graphics look wrong, flicker, or change unexpectedly
There is no single graphics setting established as a universal fix for visual glitches. First identify the symptom—such as flicker, missing or corrupted textures, unexpected lighting, or a problem limited to one location—and capture a screenshot. Record the game version, DirectX mode, GPU driver, whether ray tracing or Path Tracing is enabled, and whether mods are active. Then test with mods and overlays disabled, changing only one setting or condition at a time.

Build-specific visual changes matter. Hotfix 5.00c’s notes describe adjustments to Bloom, vegetation lighting, saturation, and Path Tracing lighting in Velen; compare your game version and location before treating a visual difference as a general graphics failure. NVIDIA’s Remastered Path Tracing and DLSS feature overview explains those features, but it does not establish that enabling them fixes glitches or is suitable for every GPU.

CD PROJEKT RED’s updated PC requirements page says the revised requirements take effect “starting from the next update.” Its announced minimum configuration is:
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5-8400
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB
- Video memory: 6 GB VRAM
- Memory: 12 GB RAM
- Storage: 70 GB SSD
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows 11
These are published minimum requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or proof that an individual crash has a hardware cause. Because the page ties them to the next update, check the requirements applicable to your installed version rather than assuming the announced set is already in effect for every installation.

What to send CD PROJEKT RED if the problem remains
A focused report gives support enough information to distinguish a build-specific issue from a driver, mod, or system conflict. Include:
- Storefront and game version shown in the main menu
- DirectX mode, GPU model, and driver version
- Whether mods, trainers, or console commands are in use
- The precise symptom, when it happens, and steps that reproduce it
- A screenshot for a graphics issue; a video if possible for a performance issue
- A relevant save if the issue occurs in a particular location
- A DxDiag report
