If a Steam game will not open, closes right away, or stays marked as running, start with a Windows restart, then verify the affected game’s files and follow the branch for the exact error message. These low-risk checks can rule out common causes, but Steam notes that launch problems vary across hardware and software configurations, so no single checklist can diagnose every failure.
Start with these safe checks
- Record what happens. Note whether the game never opens, briefly shows “Preparing to Launch,” closes immediately, stays marked “running,” or displays a named error. The wording determines the best next step.
- Restart Windows and Steam. After restarting, test the game before changing anything else. Steam recommends a fresh restart as an initial check. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting
- Install available Windows updates and check hardware drivers. Pay particular attention to graphics drivers if they have not been updated recently. Steam includes operating-system and driver updates among its general launch checks. Steam Support
- Verify the affected game’s files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game (or select its gear menu), choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. The check may take several minutes. Steam says a report that one or more files failed verification can be normal when those files are local configuration files. - Test for software conflicts only after the basic checks. Non-essential background software can interfere with a game. To isolate it, follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions, which start Windows with essential drivers and startup programs. If the game launches in a clean boot, investigate the disabled apps or services, then restore normal startup. If it still fails, the test does not point to interference from another app or service.

Fix the specific Steam launch error
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This can mean a game file is missing or has been blocked. Check your antivirus software’s history or quarantine for the affected file, then verify the game files using the steps above. Steam’s Missing Executable guidance
Do not routinely disable antivirus protection or whitelist a file just to get the game to start. Steam says to take malware detections seriously; if you are unsure whether a detection is a false positive, contact your antivirus provider. The game may have crashed without closing its process, or it may be running under another Windows account. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, locate the game process and end it. If you participate in the Steam client beta, test both the beta and the normal client. For a persistent game-specific crash or launch failure, use the game’s support link in your Steam Library to contact its support team.
“This game is currently unavailable”
Exit and restart Steam, update hardware drivers, and verify the game’s files. Steam also recommends checking whether files in the Steam folder are marked read-only. For a non-Valve game, try launching its executable from the installation folder. Some games need secondary installers for additional components; if one was canceled or blocked, the game may not start. If these checks do not resolve the message, follow Steam’s network troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the game files are the only cause.

“Game is not available on your current platform”
Check the game’s Steam Store page for its supported operating systems and hardware requirements. Steam uses this message when the game does not support the operating system in use, so verifying files will not add that support. - Missing executable or a suspected security detection: Contact Steam Support for a persistent launch error; contact your antivirus provider if you cannot determine whether a detection is genuine.
- A game-specific crash or failure: Contact the game’s support team through its Steam Library support link.
- A clean-boot test that identifies a conflict: Investigate the disabled app or service, following Microsoft’s clean-boot guidance before restoring normal startup.
