Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a SmartThings device stops responding, first check whether the problem affects one device or several. For one device, check its power, battery, range and setup. If multiple hub-connected devices fail together, check the hub and SmartThings service status before removing or resetting anything. Work through the least disruptive checks first; a factory reset can mean setting up devices again.
1. Find out whether the problem is local or widespread
Check whether one device is offline, or whether several devices, controls or automations are failing at once. A single affected device points first to its power, connection or setup. Several devices connected through the same hub make the hub or a broader service issue more likely.

Check Samsung’s SmartThings status page for service components such as hub connectivity, mobile-app connectivity and device control. If a relevant service is having an issue, wait for it to recover rather than repeatedly pairing devices. If the status page shows no issue, continue with the checks below.

2. Check the hub and device power
Check the hub indicator
Confirm that the hub is receiving power and inspect its LED. Samsung says a flashing or solid magenta light indicates that the hub is updating. Do not unplug or reboot it while that update is in progress.

Check the device itself
- For an outlet-powered device, unplug it for two minutes, then reconnect it.
- For a battery-powered device, check that the battery is seated correctly. Remove it for 30 seconds, reinsert it, and replace it if it is depleted. Use the battery type specified for that device.
- Check the device’s own indicator or manufacturer instructions for signs of a fault.
These are Samsung’s general support steps; a particular model may have additional power or indicator instructions.
3. Test wireless range and interference
Temporarily move a wireless device closer to the hub, with fewer walls or other obstacles between them, then try controlling it again. If it works nearby but not in its usual position, range or placement is a likely cause. Samsung recommends repeaters to extend wireless range, but compatibility depends on the hub, device and wireless protocol. Check support for your exact equipment before buying or moving a repeater.

- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
A Zigbee repeater can also form part of the route used by other devices. Removing or relocating one may affect their connections, so check nearby devices after changing its placement.

For Zigbee devices, consider Wi-Fi channel overlap
Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance notes that Wi-Fi and Zigbee channels can overlap. It gives Wi-Fi channels 1, 6 or 11 and Zigbee channels 14–25 as examples to consider when checking router settings. These are troubleshooting pointers, not a universal channel plan: available settings and the best choice depend on the router, hub and region. Samsung also recommends placing the hub away from the Wi-Fi router and other wireless electronics.

4. Check Wi-Fi and the device’s own app
For a device that connects over local Wi-Fi, make sure the phone and device are on the same local network when discovering it. Some products must first be set up in the manufacturer’s app before SmartThings can use them. Follow that product’s setup instructions; the steps vary by brand and model.
- If one Wi-Fi device is affected, check its connection and setup in its manufacturer’s app.
- If several Wi-Fi devices are affected, check the router and local network as well as the SmartThings app.
- Restart the affected device, the SmartThings app and the phone, then try again.
- If the Wi-Fi network name or password changed, update the device’s network details. Depending on the product, it may instead need to be reset and connected again.
5. Update software, then re-add only the affected device
Check for an update to the SmartThings app and to the device’s own app or firmware. If the device still will not respond after power, range and network checks, remove and add that device again using the instructions for its type and model.

- Local Automation for Reliable Performance – Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond-level response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notification, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)
- Flexible Power & Small Size – Features a universal USB-A port for power and data, allowing connection to power banks, wall outlets, PCs, or routers for a simple and quick setup. The Hub M100's shaft can be adjusted within a 210-degree range, making its placement extremely flexible.
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 for Faster & Security—This product supports a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 wireless network connection, which enables more efficient connections with advanced WPA3 security. Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
Some devices must be reset or excluded from the hub before they can enter pairing mode. For a Bluetooth device, it may also be necessary to unpair it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings before pairing it again. Do not assume that removing a device from SmartThings alone puts it into pairing mode.
6. Reboot the hub only if the hub is implicated
If the hub is offline or several devices connected through it are unresponsive, use the reboot procedure for the exact hub generation. Samsung Canada’s instructions distinguish between v1 and v2/v3 hubs. For v2/v3, the page describes disconnecting power and Ethernet, waiting two to three minutes, then reconnecting them, with battery handling where applicable. These are model-specific instructions, not a universal reset procedure; consult the directions for your hub before disconnecting it.
A hub factory reset or removal of a SmartThings location is a much broader step than rebooting. Reserve it for persistent, wider problems after narrower checks fail, and follow the model-specific manual and current app instructions. Re-adding the hub and devices can require setting them up again.
Choose the remedy that matches the symptoms
| Remedy | Best fit | Disruption and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Check power or battery | One device appears dead or its status seems stale | Low disruption. Use the battery type specified for that device. (Samsung support, US and France.) |
| Move the device or improve range | A wireless device works near the hub or fails intermittently | Low disruption, but obstacles and repeater placement matter. Confirm compatibility; a Zigbee repeater may affect other devices’ routes. (Samsung support, US.) |
| Check Wi-Fi and manufacturer-app setup | A LAN Wi-Fi device or third-party connected product is affected | Network and initial setup requirements vary by product. (Samsung support, US and France.) |
| Remove and re-add one device | One device remains disconnected after basic checks | It may need a reset or hub exclusion before pairing. Follow product-specific instructions. (Samsung support, US and France.) |
| Check service status or reboot the hub | Several hub-linked devices fail, or the hub is offline | Service issues require waiting for restoration. Reboot instructions vary by hub generation. (Samsung SmartThings status page; Samsung support, Canada.) |
When to contact support
If the device still does not respond after its power, range, network and pairing steps, consult the manufacturer’s instructions or support for that model. If the hub is offline, several devices fail together, or you are unsure whether a reset applies to your hub generation, use Samsung’s current hub-specific support guidance before making broader changes. Support pages and setup flows vary by region, model and app version.
