Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by identifying what is slow: sustained read or write throughput, read/write latency, metadata operations such as listing files, errors, or transfers from outside OCI. Check OCI Monitoring before changing mounts or adding capacity; then trace the symptom through the client, network path, NFS settings, directory layout, quotas, and mount-target design.
1. Identify the kind of slowdown in OCI Monitoring
Review the affected file system and mount target over the incident window. Compare read and write throughput, read and write latency, metadata latency, mount-target connections and health, and errors. OCI also groups read/write requests by request size, which can help distinguish workloads dominated by small operations from larger transfers. See Oracle’s File Storage monitoring metrics.

Metrics use a one-minute default interval. A brief spike may be transient, so compare a longer period—Oracle suggests an interval such as 15 minutes—before treating it as a persistent problem. Compare the affected period with a known-good time, and note which clients, applications, and file systems use the same mount target.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- If filesystem latency rises while client CPU or network use is also saturated, investigate the client and its network path; the graphs are clues, not proof of cause.
- If metadata latency is the main change, check directory shape and metadata-heavy operations.
- If errors rise, correlate them with mount-target health and service signals before treating the issue as a throughput limit.
2. Check compute capacity and mount-target placement
Available compute bandwidth affects application performance. Oracle says bare metal instances provide the greatest bandwidth; VM bandwidth is limited based on CPU consumed, and single-oCPU VMs provide the least. Check instance capacity, CPU, and network use while the slow workload is running, using Oracle’s File Storage application performance guidance.

- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Compare the compute instance and mount target availability domains. Oracle recommends placing them in the same availability domain to minimize latency, including when the network uses a regional subnet. A network design that is valid for connectivity can still add avoidable latency.
3. Review NFS mount options
Look at the actual mount command and persistent mount configuration on each client. If either rsize or wsize is explicitly set, check it against Oracle’s current guidance rather than copying options from another operating system or application.

- Oracle’s general performance guidance recommends omitting explicit
rsizeandwsizevalues so the client and server can negotiate them; the mounting guidance also warns that specifying these options can cause performance issues. - For large-directory performance, Oracle says values below 1,048,576 bytes (1 MiB) should be avoided and identifies leaving the options at their default 1 MiB value as best practice. That page’s specific figure is not a reason to override the broader recommendation to let negotiation occur. See troubleshooting large directories.
Verify the client platform and the applicable Oracle instructions before changing a production mount. If you test an option change, compare the same workload and metrics before and after it.

4. Separate metadata scans from data throughput
Commands such as ls -l, du, find, and rsync can spend much of their time examining directory entries rather than transferring file contents. Oracle says metadata scans slow when a single directory contains more than 100,000 files. As a reference, ls -l on a File Storage directory with 100,000 files is generally expected to finish in 10 seconds or less. These are Oracle’s figures in its page updated 2026-07-01, not a guarantee for every client or workload.

Where scans are the problem, distribute files across subdirectories instead of keeping an extremely large number of entries in one directory. Directory size, however, does not significantly affect File Storage write throughput according to Oracle; a large directory is not a universal explanation for slow data writes.
5. Decide whether more mount targets or a performance tier fits
Oracle reports filesystem read and write throughput averaged across mount targets. Use connection metrics to see whether clients are concentrated on a target, then weigh any scaling change against the workload’s metadata behavior and the service’s current limits.

| Option | What it may address | Trade-offs and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Add mount targets | May increase throughput in some situations by distributing clients. | Oracle says additional targets can slightly increase latency and disable the NFS server cache, which may hurt metadata-heavy work. |
| High Performance mount-target tier | Offers documented throughput tiers for suitable workloads. | Maximum figures depend on conditions including read block size, concurrency, and queue depth; an upgrade carries a 30-day billing commitment. Confirm current regional availability, limits, workload fit, and pricing. |
Oracle’s multiple-target article gives an illustrative example: about 750 MB/s with one mount target and about 1,500 MB/s with two targets dividing ten clients. These are example results, not a guaranteed benchmark or a promise for a particular tenancy. See Oracle’s multiple-mount-target throughput example.
Oracle’s documentation accessed 2026-10-07 lists Standard at 1 Gbps and High Performance tiers of 20, 40, and 80 Gbps. These are documented maximum-throughput tier values under the conditions described in High Performance mount-target guidance, not expected speeds for every client or workload. For its HPMT-80 read-throughput scenario, Oracle gives an example requiring capable aggregate client bandwidth, a Linux kernel 5.3 or later with nconnect, a dataset above 20 GB, and queue depth 64. The page’s nconnect=16 example is scenario-specific, not a universal setting. Review the live documentation and billing details before changing tiers.

6. Check quotas if they are enabled
Quotas can affect performance depending on how many users are active simultaneously, how close a principal is to its quota, and whether the file system is exported through multiple mount targets. If quotas are in use, review quota metrics, events, and logs. A write that would exceed a user’s quota is rejected with NFS_QUOTA; investigate that as a quota error rather than assuming it is a generic throughput bottleneck. Oracle’s quota documentation describes the relevant signals.
7. Rethink slow on-premises transfers
If the slow operation is an on-premises server mounting OCI File Storage directly over the internet, the network path and protocol matter. Oracle says direct mounting can be very slow because NFS is chatty over the internet. Its documented alternative is an OCI instance in the mount target’s subnet as an intermediate endpoint, with data streamed between instances using parallel rsync tooling such as fpsync. This approach requires the appropriate network security and export settings; confirm the actual path and workload before redesigning a transfer. See Oracle’s File Storage transfer troubleshooting guidance.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Observed symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| Low sustained read/write throughput | Client bandwidth and CPU, mount-target connections and placement, NFS options, and whether the workload is large sequential I/O. |
| High latency without a clear throughput limit | Compare client and mount-target availability domains, inspect network use, and check whether adding targets could increase latency for the workload. |
| Slow file listing or scans | Metadata latency and whether a directory exceeds 100,000 entries; consider subdividing the directory. |
Writes rejected with NFS_QUOTA |
Quota usage, events, and logs for the affected principal. |
| Slow transfer from an on-premises host | Whether the host mounts NFS directly over the internet; evaluate an OCI-side intermediate instance and parallel streaming. |
Service limits, tier availability, and billing details can change. Check Oracle’s current documentation and the OCI console for your region before making production changes; monitoring patterns narrow the investigation but do not, by themselves, establish a root cause.
