If a website is blank, incomplete, slow, or won’t load in Safari, start with the simplest checks: reload the page, restart Safari, and install available macOS updates. Then test extensions, site data, settings, and network conditions one change at a time. The steps below help you identify whether the problem is limited to one website, an extension, Safari settings, or the wider network—without resetting everything.
Start with the scope of the problem
Notice whether the failure affects one website, every site in Safari, or the same site in other browsers and devices. That distinction helps narrow the cause before you change settings.

- One site in Safari: Check that site’s stored data, permissions, and content-blocking settings.
- Several sites in Safari: Test extensions, update macOS, and check Safari settings.
- The same site in multiple browsers or devices on one network: The website or network may be responsible. Apple says that if other devices and browsers on the same network are affected, the issue is probably with the website (Apple Support: If Safari doesn’t open a page or work as expected on your Mac).
Try the basic fixes first
- Reload the page: In Safari, press Command-R.
- Quit and reopen Safari: If reloading does not help, quit the app and open it again.
- Update macOS and restart: Install available macOS updates, then restart your Mac. Safari is included with macOS, so Safari updates arrive through macOS software updates.
These steps apply to Mac. If the problem persists, continue with the tests below, changing one thing at a time so you can identify what affects the result.
Test whether a Safari extension is involved
Extensions can change how pages load or interact with websites. Temporarily turning them off is a useful way to isolate a conflict.

- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions. On older macOS versions, the menu may say Preferences.
- Deselect the extensions to turn them off temporarily.
- Reload the affected site. If it works, turn extensions back on one at a time to identify the one associated with the problem.
- Update the implicated extension, then check whether the site works with it enabled.
Extension behavior can depend on context, not just whether the extension is installed. Safari profiles can have separate extension settings, and extensions are off by default in newly created profiles. On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, extensions that require website access are also off by default in private windows unless you allow them there (Apple Support: Use Safari extensions).
Use a private window to check for site-data problems
Open a New Private Window with Shift-Command-N and try the site. If it works in the private window but not a regular one, stored data for that site may be contributing to the problem.
- Before removing data, make sure you know your sign-in details. Removing it may sign you out.
- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
- Find and select the affected website, then choose Remove.
- Reopen the site in a regular window and sign in again if needed.
Remove data for the affected site rather than clearing all website data. A private-window test is a clue, not proof: private browsing changes the browsing context, including extension access in some configurations.

Check the site’s settings and permissions
Some websites need a particular browser feature or permission to work. Check only settings that plausibly relate to the problem, and test one change at a time. Depending on the site, relevant controls may include:
- JavaScript or cookies;
- cross-site tracking settings or advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection;
- camera or microphone access;
- downloads or pop-ups; and
- content blockers or other website-specific permissions.
Lowering privacy protection can expose more activity or reduce protections. Make the smallest temporary change that tests a suspected cause, reload the page, and restore the original setting if it does not help. Compare network conditions and other browsers
If the problem remains, compare the affected site across browsers, devices, and networks. These checks help distinguish a Safari-specific problem from a site or network issue.

- Check Private Relay: Reload the page and, if offered, choose Reload and Show IP Address. Compare whether the site behaves differently.
- Review network software: Check whether a VPN, security or network-monitoring app, custom proxy, or custom DNS setting could be affecting the connection. Avoid changing multiple network settings at once.
- Try another browser or device on the same network: If the site fails there too, the problem may not be specific to Safari.
- Try a different network, if available: If the site works on another network, investigate the original network or its configuration.
If a website continues to fail only in Safari, contact its owner or developer. Apple says Safari 26 adds Report a Website Issue after reloading, for devices covered by the latest updates for macOS Sequoia 15 or later. The option is version- and update-dependent, so it may not appear on every Mac (Apple Support: If Safari doesn’t open a page or work as expected on your Mac).

If an extension’s checkbox is unavailable, Apple notes that legitimate software with screen-recording or accessibility features can sometimes interfere with the security feature that prevents malicious software from enabling extensions.
- Install the latest Apple software updates and try enabling the extension again.
- If it remains blocked, start your Mac in Safe Mode.
- Open Safari in Safe Mode and enable the extension.
- Restart your Mac normally.

Manage extensions on iPhone
On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions to review extensions and their settings. If you use Safari profiles, enable an extension for each profile where you need it. On a webpage, use Page Menu > Manage Extensions to control extension access for that site.
Review what each extension does before allowing access. To remove an extension from iPhone, delete the app that contains it. Apple’s instructions cover extension management on Apple devices (Apple Support: Use Safari extensions).

On Mac, Apple describes the Mac App Store as the safest and easiest place to discover Safari extensions. Extensions there are reviewed by Apple, and they can update automatically if Automatic Updates is selected. Because extensions may access webpages, review their permissions and restrict access to selected sites when possible.

A legacy developer-signed .safariextz extension no longer loads and cannot be turned on in current Safari guidance. If you have one, look for a current version from its developer rather than changing Safari’s security settings (Apple Support: Use Safari extensions).
Fix unexpected tab or window behavior
If links open in unexpected tabs or windows, or tabs close when you do not expect them to, check tab configuration rather than treating it as a website compatibility failure. On Mac, open Safari > Settings > Tabs. Apple documents controls there for opening pages in tabs or windows, tab layout and title visibility, and automatically closing tabs after one day, one week, one month, or manually (Apple Support: Change Tabs settings in Safari on Mac).
When the problem remains
For a persistent problem with one site, contact the website owner or developer and describe what happens, the Safari version and macOS version, and whether the site works in a private window, another browser, or another network. Those comparisons give the site’s support team useful context without requiring broad changes to your browser.
