Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your RuneScape: Dragonwilds world is inaccessible, a character save appears corrupted, or the game crashes, first identify which issue you have: Jagex described a launch-window character-save incident tied mainly to editing appearance, a separate modded-server save issue, and general crashes that may need Windows diagnostics. Jagex’s September 29, 2026 update said it had disabled Edit Appearance and rolled out a preventative fix; its announced replacement-character recovery was still targeted for update 1.0.1 in mid-October, not confirmed as released.

| Launch-window character-save corruption | Jagex said around a thousand players across consoles and PC Game Pass were affected when disconnecting, putting consoles into sleep mode, or similar circumstances left saves unreadable or inaccessible. It identified editing character appearance as the main culprit. | Jagex said Edit Appearance had been disabled and a preventative fix rolled out. A replacement character was planned for affected corrupted character saves, with 1.0.1 in mid-October 2026 as the target; the update did not confirm that it shipped or explain how to trigger or check it. What to do if a save became unreadable after appearance editing
Jagex’s September 29, 2026 update links the launch-window incident mainly to character appearance editing: “The main culprit of this was editing your character’s appearance.” Jagex said it disabled Edit Appearance and rolled out a preventative fix. That is a mitigation for the reported incident, not a way to repair a save that is already unreadable.
Jagex announced a planned replacement for corrupted character saves: a replacement character with Tier 4 equipment would be installed into the world the player had progressed in. The update said names, appearances, and private-chest access would be unaffected, and that affected characters would be pre-levelled and supplied with vital equipment. The planned replacement’s skills were Attack 60, Ranged 60, Magic 60, Agility 55, Artisan 61, Construction 85, Cooking 50, Farming 59, Fishing 50, Mining 72, Runecrafting 50, and Woodcutting 47. These are the announced replacement-character levels, not a repair outcome promised for every type of corrupted save. Jagex update, September 29, 2026

That post targeted the change for update 1.0.1 in mid-October 2026: “For now, our priority is focusing on targeting this fix for our 1.0.1 update in mid October.” The wording describes a future target at the time of publication, not confirmation that the update shipped. It gives no account-specific instructions for requesting or checking a replacement. Do not assume that editing local files or replacing hardware can restore the affected character.
Troubleshoot crashes separately
Jagex’s December 16, 2025 Fellhollow known-issues post recommended these checks for crashes during gameplay. They are general troubleshooting guidance from that dated post; they do not promise to fix the later save-corruption incident.

- Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
- Remove all mods. Launch the game without mods and check whether the crash continues.
- Update your graphics drivers. Install the current driver offered for your graphics hardware, then test the game again.
- Verify the game files in Steam. In your Steam Library, open Dragonwilds’ Properties, choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Test a new world and character. Create both and check whether the crash persists. If it occurs only with an existing world or character, note that distinction when contacting support.
The same December 2025 post acknowledged crashes to desktop while loading and said Jagex was investigating. Treat that as a historical known issue, not proof of its current status. The September 23, 2026 1.0.0.5 notes also listed a different crash: choosing Play Online while disconnected from the internet could crash the game, and Jagex was targeting that issue for 1.0.1. If a crash continues after the checks above, Jagex’s December 16, 2025 post asks players to send the log, world saves, and character saves. These documented paths are for Windows:
- Log:
%localappdata%RSDragonwildsSavedLogsRSDragonwilds.log - World saves:
%localappdata%RSDragonwildsSavedSaveGames - Character saves:
%localappdata%RSDragonwildsSavedSaveCharacter
- After a crash, close the game and leave it not running.
- Copy the log immediately after the crash, before launching the game again.
- Include the relevant world and character save files. For world saves, include both the
.savand.verbackupversions when present. - Describe what you were doing when the crash occurred, whether you use mods, and whether a new world and character also crash. Send the files through Jagex’s support channel.
For a Windows player whose save files remain accessible, storing a separate manual copy elsewhere is a reasonable precaution before troubleshooting. Jagex’s post asks for save files but does not recommend a USB drive, and a copy is not a repair for corruption. These Windows file paths are not instructions for console recovery. Jagex’s September 23, 2026 notes for version 1.0.0.5 say the hotfix went live September 25. At that point, Jagex said its investigation of world and character save corruption and possible restoration methods was ongoing, and that removing the Edit Appearance button would mitigate the issue. The notes also said restoring some saves had reset Custom or Creative worlds to Normal. That restoration side effect concerns some restored worlds; it does not establish that every inaccessible world can be recovered. Jagex 1.0.0.5 notes

- Please note, you’ll need a copy of RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg to use this expansion.
The same notes describe the console-player corruption risk from joining a modded dedicated server and the offline Play Online crash as separate problems. Neither should be treated as proof of the cause of a particular inaccessible save or crash.
