Most Home Assistant–Proxmox failures fall into one of five categories: Home Assistant cannot reach the Proxmox API, the host or realm is entered incorrectly, the password or API token is invalid, the account lacks the privilege for a requested feature, or TLS certificate verification fails. Start from the Home Assistant host or container—not from a laptop browser—then work through credentials, permissions, SSL, and logs in that order.
The built-in integration uses the Proxmox VE API. Its documented default port is 8006. Monitoring and control are permission-separated, so a connection that successfully creates sensors can still reject a power button or leave an update entity unavailable.

Use this symptom-first triage
Before changing credentials or permissions, identify the narrowest symptom. The distinction between “nothing connects” and “one action fails” usually tells you which layer to investigate.

1. Prove that Home Assistant can reach Proxmox
A browser session on your workstation proves only that the workstation can reach Proxmox. Home Assistant may be running in a container, virtual machine, or separate VLAN with different routing, DNS, firewall, and DHCP conditions. Perform the checks from the machine or network namespace that actually runs Home Assistant.
Check the server and target address
- Confirm the Proxmox server is powered on and its management service is available.
- Compare the integration’s host field with the Proxmox hostname or IP that is reachable from Home Assistant. A stale DHCP address is a common cause of a sudden timeout.
- Use the documented API port, 8006, unless your deployment intentionally uses another port.
- Check DNS resolution from the Home Assistant environment if you entered a hostname. If the hostname resolves differently there than on your laptop, use a verified address temporarily to isolate DNS from integration settings.
- Inspect routing and firewall rules between the Home Assistant host/container and the Proxmox management network. A refused connection, timeout, and name-resolution failure are different network symptoms and should be recorded exactly.
Do not treat a generic connection exception as an authentication problem until the target is reachable. Home Assistant’s configuration troubleshooting guide recommends restarting once, then inspecting logs when a problem persists; apply that process after you have confirmed the endpoint itself is reachable.
Check the integration’s prerequisites
After a successful connection, the integration needs discoverable Proxmox resources to create useful entities. If setup completes but entities are absent, verify that at least one Proxmox node has a virtual machine or container. Also remember that not every storage type is fully exposed through the Proxmox VE API; an absent storage metric can therefore be an API-coverage limitation rather than a broken connection.

2. Recheck every setup field, realm, and credential type
The Proxmox VE integration asks for a hostname or IP address, port, username, SSL-verification choice, and either password authentication or an API token. A value copied into the wrong field can look like a server or permission failure.
Username and realm
With password authentication, Home Assistant uses the Proxmox identity in username@realm form, even though the UI may ask you to enter only the username. The realm is part of the identity: alice@pam and alice@pve are different accounts. If your account uses a nonstandard realm, choose Other in the integration and enter the realm name exactly as configured in Proxmox.

Password versus API token
Decide which credential type you are using before editing values. Do not put an API-token secret into a password field or append a token secret to the token ID. An API token has two distinct pieces:
- Token ID: the identifier associated with the Proxmox user and token name.
- Token secret: the secret value generated when the token is created.
The secret is shown only once at creation. If it was lost, create a replacement token rather than trying to recover the old value. An expired or revoked token must likewise be replaced or renewed through the relevant Proxmox administration process.

Use a dedicated account for Home Assistant instead of the Proxmox root account. A separate API token is revocable and avoids storing the Proxmox password in Home Assistant, but it introduces its own lifecycle: expiration, revocation, secret storage, and token-specific permissions must be managed.
When API-token privilege separation is enabled in Proxmox, the token needs explicit permissions for the operations it will perform. When separation is disabled, the token inherits the user’s permissions. Check the effective permissions of both the user and the token before assuming that a valid-looking token has access to a particular node, pool, VM, container, or action.
3. Match permissions to the feature that fails
Authentication answers “who are you?” Authorization answers “what may you do?” The integration’s monitoring and control entities use different Proxmox privileges, so partial operation is meaningful evidence.

When monitoring works but a button does not
Treat a failed button as an action-authorization problem first. Confirm the exact action, target resource, assigned role, and any ACL scope applied at the node, pool, VM, or container level. A valid session that can read status does not automatically grant power-management or snapshot privileges.

After changing a Proxmox user or token ACL, verify the effective permissions and reproduce the action. If the integration still appears to hold the old authorization state, reload it from Home Assistant’s integration controls and test again; this is a practical retry step, not a guarantee that every authorization change requires a reload.
When the update entity is unavailable
The Proxmox VE integration documents Sys.Modify or the PVEAdmin role for the node update entity. Check that permission specifically and confirm that you are looking at a node entity rather than a VM or storage entity. Do not infer that an unavailable update entity means the entire API connection failed.
4. Handle SSL verification errors deliberately
The setup flow includes a Verify SSL certificate option. If verification is enabled and TLS negotiation fails, inspect whether the certificate is valid, trusted by the Home Assistant environment, and issued for the hostname you entered. A certificate that is valid for a DNS name can still fail when the integration connects by an IP address, and a locally issued certificate may not be trusted in the Home Assistant container.
- Read the exact TLS error in Home Assistant’s log; distinguish certificate trust, expiry, hostname mismatch, and connection refusal.
- Compare the certificate’s subject or SAN hostname with the integration’s host value.
- Check the certificate validity period and the trust store available to the Home Assistant operating environment.
- Correct the hostname, certificate chain, or trust configuration where appropriate, then retry the connection.
- Only if you deliberately accept the security trade-off should you change the verification setting; disabling verification is not a universal fix and removes an important authenticity check.
The official integration page documents the setting but does not provide a complete certificate-generation or trust-store recipe. Keep certificate remediation specific to your Proxmox and Home Assistant deployment rather than assuming every TLS error has the same cause.

5. Read the failure pattern instead of guessing
“Home Assistant Proxmox integration failed to set up”
- Confirm the Proxmox host and port 8006 are reachable from Home Assistant.
- Check the username, realm, and selected password/token method.
- Verify the token ID and secret are in their respective fields, and that the token is not expired or revoked.
- Ensure the account can read the target node and that at least one VM or container exists for entity discovery.
- Inspect the setup exception in Home Assistant’s log and preserve the exact wording for escalation.
“Connection refused” or timeout
These errors occur before useful authentication can happen. Check that the Proxmox service and server are running, the address is current, the route and firewall permit TCP 8006, and DNS or DHCP has not changed the destination. Record whether the result is an immediate refusal, a timeout, or a name-resolution error; each points to a different layer.
“401,” unauthorized, or authentication failed
Re-enter the identity in the correct realm, confirm whether the integration is configured for a password or API token, and check token expiry and privilege separation. Redact secrets before saving log excerpts. A 401 does not prove that the Proxmox host is down; it indicates that the request reached an authentication boundary but was not accepted.
Sensors are present, but control entities are missing or fail
Check the action’s privilege and ACL scope. Power operations need VM.PowerMgmt or an appropriate role; snapshots need VM.Snapshot or a suitable administrative role. Test one known target and note whether the failure affects all resources or only a node, pool, VM, or container.
A storage sensor is absent
First rule out an ordinary discovery problem, then check whether that storage type is one the Proxmox VE API exposes to the integration. The built-in integration documents incomplete exposure for some storage types, so absence alone is not proof of a broken connection.
6. Capture useful logs and diagnostics
Once basic reachability and configuration checks are complete, collect evidence rather than repeatedly changing settings.
- Open Home Assistant’s integration configuration and enable debug logging for the Proxmox VE integration.
- Reproduce one failure: submit setup, reload the integration, press the affected button, or open the unavailable entity.
- Disable debug logging after reproduction so normal operation does not generate unnecessary volume.
- Download the resulting Home Assistant logs.
- From the Proxmox VE integration or device page, download diagnostics when that option is available.
- Record the exact time, target node or guest, action attempted, host/port form used, and whether password or token authentication was selected.
Home Assistant’s troubleshooting documentation describes the broader log workflow. The Proxmox VE integration page is the controlling reference for its fields, entities, and required privileges.
Redact before sharing
Inspect every log and diagnostic archive before posting it publicly or sending it to a support forum. Remove API-token secrets, passwords, private hostnames, public IP addresses, usernames where sensitive, and any other infrastructure details you do not want exposed. Never publish a token secret; because it is shown only at creation, leaked credentials should be revoked and replaced.
7. Keep version and scope assumptions explicit
The Proxmox documentation catalogue currently lists the Proxmox VE 9.x Admin Guide as version 9.2, last updated August 10, 2026: Proxmox VE documentation. The Home Assistant integration page does not publish a tested Proxmox-version matrix in the material available here, so do not assume that every Home Assistant and Proxmox combination has been verified. When escalating, include the Home Assistant version, Proxmox VE version, installation type, and whether Home Assistant runs directly, in a VM, or in a container.

A successfully authenticated integration can still omit a storage metric, update entity, or control because the API endpoint or required privilege does not expose it to that account.
Choose the least access that solves the problem
For monitoring-only use, start with a dedicated account and the least privilege that provides the required read access, typically the PVEAuditor role. Add only the action privilege needed by a specific automation. Prefer a separate, revocable API token when you do not want Home Assistant to hold the Proxmox password, while documenting its expiry and permission-separation settings.
Certificate verification and token convenience are operational trade-offs, not settings to change blindly. A locally trusted certificate may require setup work, but verification protects against connecting to an unintended endpoint. An inherited-permission token is simpler to administer, while a privilege-separated token gives finer control and requires more deliberate ACL maintenance.
Escalate with a reproducible case
When the problem remains, provide a concise case containing the symptom, exact exception, timestamp, Home Assistant and Proxmox versions, deployment topology, host and port form (with sensitive values redacted), credential type, effective role or ACL, and the single action that failed. Include relevant debug logs and diagnostics only after removing secrets. This lets support distinguish a network path failure, rejected identity, missing privilege, TLS trust issue, or documented API limitation without asking you to repeat undirected changes.
