How to troubleshoot poor performance after modding Gears of War: E-Day

Find out whether a Gears of War: E-Day performance problem comes from a mod or the game itself with controlled baseline tests, storage and graphics checks, CPU/GPU measurements, crash-log triage and current launch caveats.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest way to find out whether a mod is responsible for poor Gears of War: E-Day performance is to reproduce the problem with every mod disabled, in the same scene and at the same settings. If the clean copy is smooth, add mods back one at a time. If it is still slow or unstable, investigate the game settings, storage drive, hardware, drivers and current launch issues instead of blaming the mod automatically.

This method separates low average frame rate from frame-time stutter, asset pop-in, long loads, freezes, crashes and network lag. It also gives you useful evidence if you need to report a bug.

Start by naming the exact symptom

“Poor performance” can describe several unrelated problems. Write down what you see, when it starts and whether it occurs offline, online or in one particular level. Use the same reproducible scene for every comparison.

Symptom What to measure Likely investigation path
Consistently low FPS Average FPS, resolution, preset, upscaler, frame cap, CPU and GPU utilization Graphics mode, CPU/GPU limit, driver and mod configuration
Intermittent stutter Frame-time spikes, traversal location, shader or asset activity, storage usage Mod conflict, asset streaming, HDD installation, background processes or memory pressure
Asset pop-in or missing textures Where it happens and how long assets take to appear Storage speed, modded assets, installation integrity and streaming behavior
Long loading or hangs Load duration, whether it follows a checkpoint reload, and drive type Storage, memory pressure, corrupted files or a mod that changes assets
Hard freeze or crash Crash time, error text, latest log, driver version and reproducible steps GPU driver, Unreal Engine device removal, incompatible mod or game defect
Online delay or rubber-banding Ping, packet loss and whether local frame time is stable Network conditions; do not treat network latency as a graphics benchmark

Record your GPU and CPU models, system memory, Windows version, game build, graphics-driver version, every mod and its version, installation drive and the date the problem began. Note whether a game update preceded the change. A complete record prevents a “fixed” result that was actually caused by a different scene or setting.

Build a clean, repeatable baseline

Preserve your current configuration

Before removing anything, save your mod list, versions and any custom configuration files. If a mod has an uninstall guide, follow it rather than deleting random files. Keep a copy of the original file names and locations so you can restore a known state.

Disable or remove the recent mod

  1. Use the mod’s documented disable or uninstall method.
  2. Restart the game and, if the mod changes a persistent profile or save, test a separate save or a level that does not depend on the mod.
  3. Load the identical scene used for the modded test.
  4. Set the same resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, frame cap and display mode.
  5. Run the same route for long enough to reproduce the hitch, load delay or crash.

Do not compare a busy combat sequence with an empty corridor, or a newly compiled shader cache with a warmed-up run. A useful baseline changes only one variable: the mod state.

Add changes back one at a time

If the clean run is normal, enable one mod and repeat the route. Continue until the symptom returns. The first change that reliably restores the problem is a strong suspect, but it is not proof that the mod is defective: two mods can interact, and a game update can make an older mod incompatible. Test the suspect alone, then test it with the other mods that were present when the problem appeared.

Do not stack configuration and optimization files

Configuration mods often edit the same Unreal Engine settings. The author of the Ultimate Engine Tweaks file specifically tells users not to combine that file with other optimization mods and to delete it if performance becomes worse. Those are the author’s compatibility instructions, not an independent demonstration that the tweak improves performance. See the author’s posts for the exact file and removal method: Nexus Mods author page.

When several packages modify an Engine.ini or similar file, keep one known-good copy, remove duplicate edits and retest. Do not paste settings from multiple “FPS boost” guides into the same file. If you cannot identify which lines a package changed, restore the clean file through the mod manager or game launcher, then reintroduce a single, documented change.

Check the game’s own graphics choices first

The official support material describes graphics modes that trade image quality for higher frame rate across Campaign, Horde Siege and Versus. The best choice depends on your hardware and display; there is no universally optimal mode. Compare the in-game modes before editing configuration files, using the support hub’s current instructions: Gears of War Support.

Use a controlled settings test

  1. Choose one graphics mode and note its resolution, quality preset, upscaler and frame-rate cap.
  2. Disable the mod, run your baseline scene and record average FPS plus frame-time consistency.
  3. Change only the mode or one setting, then repeat the same route.
  4. Apply the setting that fixes the bottleneck without hiding a new problem such as severe image reconstruction or input latency.

A higher reported FPS is not automatically a smoother experience. Look for regular frame times, stable camera movement and consistent asset loading. If a mod changes quality settings behind the menu’s back, compare the actual resolution and upscaler as well as the named preset.

Verify storage before chasing a CPU or GPU upgrade

The official open-beta FAQ said that installing the game on a mechanical hard disk drive was unsupported and could cause severe loading issues, missing assets, stuttering and crashes. That statement is beta-era guidance, not a confirmed launch requirement, so treat it as a diagnostic clue rather than a guarantee that moving the game will cure every problem. Read the qualification in the FAQ: Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Details & FAQ.

If your installation is on an HDD and your symptoms match that list, move the game to an internal NVMe SSD if your system supports one, then repeat the clean and modded tests. An SSD is a conditional storage remedy for load and streaming symptoms; it is not a general “mod-performance” upgrade and will not fix a CPU-limited frame rate, a bad driver or an incompatible asset package.

Apply the Intel Arc checks only to the affected models

The same beta FAQ specifically advised owners of Intel Arc A580 and B580 cards who experienced poor performance to check that Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding are enabled in firmware. These checks are targeted at those GPUs, not a universal requirement for every PC.

Measure the bottleneck instead of guessing

CPU-heavy behavior is plausible in E-Day

Tom’s Hardware tested 25 CPUs and reported that a Ryzen 7 9800X3D was 42% faster than a Ryzen 5 7600X at 1080p High in its test system. The outlet also observed 80% to 90% CPU utilization during its E-Day gameplay. Those figures describe its hardware, settings and methodology, not a promised result for every player. Read the complete test for the test conditions: Tom’s Hardware E-Day CPU benchmark.

During your baseline run, watch per-core CPU usage, total GPU utilization, temperatures and clock speeds. A GPU that remains well below full utilization while one or more CPU cores are saturated points toward a CPU or game-thread limit. A GPU at sustained high utilization with a consistent temperature and clock points toward graphics settings or GPU capacity. Throttling, power limits and background applications can mimic either pattern.

Use frame time, not only the FPS counter

Capture average FPS and the worst recurring frame-time spikes in both runs. A mod that raises the average by a few frames but introduces regular 100-millisecond hitches is a regression for playability. Keep the frame cap, resolution and upscaler identical so the comparison means something.

The September 30 launch article warns that benchmark-overlay FPS can undercount because generated frames are excluded. If frame generation is enabled, record whether your overlay shows rendered frames only and do not compare that number directly with a counter that includes generated output. The launch information is here: Emergence Begins – Tomorrow.

Investigate GPU crashes with logs and driver evidence

For a crash or black screen, do not rely on a screenshot of the desktop. Epic’s general Unreal Engine guidance recommends checking the latest log for DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED or another reported error code, verifying the current driver from your GPU manufacturer and documenting reproducible steps. This is general Unreal Engine triage, not a confirmed E-Day-specific fix. Follow the guidance at Epic’s Unreal Engine GPU-crash documentation.

  1. Reproduce the crash once with all mods disabled and note the exact time.
  2. Copy the latest game log before launching again if a new run would overwrite it.
  3. Search the log for DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED and record any adjacent error code or device name.
  4. Write down your GPU driver version and install the latest driver offered by the GPU manufacturer if yours is outdated.
  5. Retest the clean build, then test the suspect mod alone.

If the clean build also crashes, report the game version, driver, hardware, settings, exact reproduction steps and log error. If only one modded configuration crashes, include the mod version and its installation method rather than claiming that every mod causes the issue.

Account for current launch caveats

Uninterrupted campaign sessions can accumulate memory problems

The September 30 launch article says that playing the entire campaign without reloading checkpoints or restarting may cause memory issues. If performance degrades only after a very long uninterrupted session, restart the game and test a fresh session before attributing the decline to a mod. Record elapsed play time and whether a checkpoint reload changes the behavior.

Install the October 5 update before comparing results

The October 5 patch notes list general stability, performance, hardware-compatibility and reporting improvements. They do not promise that every player’s stutter or crash is resolved. Make sure your clean and modded runs use the same current build, and note the build number when reporting a remaining problem: October 05 Patch Notes.

Use a comparison sheet for every test

Field Clean baseline Modded run
Game build and date Record exactly Record exactly
Mod name and version None List every active package
Scene and route Same location Same location
Resolution, preset and upscaler Record values Keep identical
Frame cap and display mode Record values Keep identical
Average FPS and frame-time spikes Record both Record both

Storage drive HDD, SATA SSD or NVMe Keep identical
Crash or log behavior Error code and time Error code and time

This side-by-side record distinguishes a genuine mod regression from a change in scene, driver, game build or system state. If adding one package changes only asset pop-in while FPS remains steady, investigate its asset streaming rather than treating it as a generic frame-rate problem.

Follow the branch that matches your symptom

Low FPS in every scene

  • Run the clean baseline at the same settings.
  • Check whether the CPU or GPU is saturated and whether temperatures indicate throttling.
  • Test the official graphics modes before editing files.
  • Compare a frame cap and upscaler that your hardware can sustain.
  • Only after that, test a single mod and record whether it changes utilization or clocks.

Stutter while moving through the world

  • Repeat the same traversal with mods disabled.
  • Check whether the game is installed on an HDD; the beta FAQ associated HDD installs with stuttering and missing assets.
  • Remove overlapping configuration and asset mods.
  • Watch frame-time spikes and storage activity rather than relying on average FPS.
  • Test after restarting the game if the issue appears late in a long campaign session.

Missing or late-loading assets

  • Compare the exact location with a clean installation.
  • Check drive type and available space.
  • Disable the mod that adds or replaces the affected assets.
  • Verify or repair the game installation through your launcher if the clean copy also shows missing files.

Crashes after enabling a mod

  • Reproduce once without the mod.
  • Capture the latest log and any DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED code.
  • Confirm the driver and game build.
  • Test the mod alone, without other configuration packages.
  • Report the reproducible sequence to the mod author and game support with versions and logs.

Only online matches feel bad

Separate local rendering from network performance. If frame times are stable but players teleport or actions arrive late, record ping and packet loss and troubleshoot the connection. If the screen hitches locally while ping is normal, return to the graphics, storage and mod branches above.

Be cautious with claimed “FPS boost” mods

Coverage from Windows Central described mods that claimed performance gains, while noting that its writer had not tested them. Treat such claims as unverified until you reproduce them on your own hardware with a controlled baseline; do not assume a download is a demonstrated fix. The article is available at Windows Central.

A mod can reduce visual quality, alter streaming behavior or change CPU work while making a counter look better. Keep the original files, change one thing at a time and prefer reversible settings. Never use a claimed optimization to explain away a new crash or missing asset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a useful support report

A support team or mod author can act on a reproducible report. Include:

  • Game edition, build number and date of the test.
  • CPU, GPU, system memory and storage type.
  • Operating-system and graphics-driver versions.
  • Resolution, preset, graphics mode, upscaler, frame cap and frame-generation state.
  • Every mod name, version, source and installation method.
  • The exact scene, route and steps that trigger the problem.
  • Clean-versus-modded FPS, frame-time behavior, utilization and temperatures.
  • Crash text, log error codes and the time of the failure.
  • Whether the problem began after a game or driver update.

State what happened after removing the mod. “The clean baseline is smooth; enabling package X alone reproduces a 120-millisecond hitch in the same corridor” is actionable. “The game is broken” is not.

When a hardware change is justified

Do not buy a new CPU or GPU until the baseline identifies a sustained hardware limit. The published CPU results show that processor choice can matter in a CPU-heavy workload, but the 42% difference cited above applies to Tom’s Hardware’s tested Ryzen systems and 1080p High settings. Your utilization, frame-time and temperature data should establish whether your machine has the same type of limit.

An internal NVMe SSD is the most defensible hardware change when the game is on an unsupported mechanical HDD and the symptoms are severe loading, asset streaming or related stutter. It is not a guaranteed cure and is not warranted solely because a mod is installed. Resolve configuration conflicts, driver errors and game-build differences first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision rule

If performance improves on the clean copy and worsens when one mod returns, keep that mod disabled until its compatibility is confirmed or an update addresses the conflict. If the clean copy is still poor, the mod is not the first suspect: follow the branch for settings, storage, hardware utilization, drivers, memory-session behavior or current game patches. This evidence-based sequence is faster and safer than continually adding optimization files.
