Investigate if the fans stay loud at idle, temperatures remain unusually high for your exact components, performance slows or stutters, or the PC crashes or shuts down. Start with workload, airflow, and fan checks before changing hardware.
First, work out when the noise or heat occurs
Compare the PC at idle with its behavior during a repeatable gaming session. Note CPU and GPU temperatures, fan behavior, and whether the game slows, stutters, crashes, or the system shuts down. A GPU fan ramping up as the card heats under load can be normal; fan volume by itself is not a reliable fault diagnosis. ASUS explains that GPU fan speed adjusts to temperature and that behavior varies by card and operating conditions (ASUS GPU fan guidance).

There is no single temperature that defines overheating for every gaming PC. The relevant limits and normal behavior depend on the exact CPU or GPU, cooler, case airflow, room temperature, settings, and workload. Check support information for your specific processor and graphics card rather than applying a blanket rule such as “over 80°C is overheating.” AMD directs users to the specifications for their individual CPU and notes the impact of cooling and operating conditions (AMD CPU temperature guidance).
Check for unexpected workload or a recent change
- Check resource use: Open Task Manager and look for applications using more CPU or GPU than expected while the PC is idle or during a game. Close or investigate unfamiliar or unnecessary programs. AMD also recommends disabling nonessential background applications when troubleshooting CPU performance and temperature (AMD CPU temperature guidance).
- Undo recent changes as a test: If the problem began after installing software, changing hardware, adjusting BIOS or fan settings, or overclocking, reverse that change temporarily and compare behavior. AMD recommends testing CPU performance in a stock configuration (AMD CPU temperature guidance).
- Look for thermal throttling: A processor may reduce its clock speed when it reaches its thermal limit. Lower clocks, stuttering, or lost performance under load can therefore accompany a cooling problem, though they can have other causes too. Intel describes throttling as a response to temperature reaching the processor’s thermal limit (Intel processor temperature and throttling guidance).
Restore clear airflow around the case
- Place the tower on a hard, open surface rather than carpet or inside a closed cabinet. Leave space around intake and exhaust openings.
- With the PC shut down, look for dust, lint, blocked vents, cables near fan blades, or components obstructing airflow.
- Check that the case has working intake and exhaust airflow. Intel’s boxed-processor guidance calls for adequate chassis airflow and balanced intake and exhaust; ASUS likewise recommends checking ventilation and ambient conditions (Intel boxed processor installation and airflow guidance; ASUS GPU fan guidance).
A brief side-panel comparison can help identify restricted case airflow: ASUS suggests checking whether GPU temperature drops noticeably with the panel open. Treat this only as a diagnostic clue. Do not use an open case as a permanent cooling fix; it can disrupt intended airflow and leave components more exposed to debris (ASUS GPU fan guidance).

Inspect fans safely
Shut down the PC before inspecting accessible fans. Look for dust buildup, damaged blades, loose cables, or anything blocking a fan. Confirm operation only with the computer assembled and while observing it safely. Grinding, knocking, or ticking may indicate a fan problem.
A graphics-card fan that is not spinning is not necessarily broken. Some models stop their fans at low temperatures or loads. Check the exact card manufacturer’s fan policy before treating a stationary fan as a fault; ASUS’s published start and stop behavior applies to specific card families, not every GPU (ASUS GPU fan guidance).

Check the CPU cooler and identify who built the PC
For a self-built PC
Verify that the CPU cooler is compatible with the exact processor, socket, and case, and is firmly mounted. Check that its fan or pump is connected and that a newly installed cooler has no protective film left on its contact surface. AMD advises checking that the cooling solution meets the CPU’s default requirements, is mounted correctly, and works. Intel says the cooler’s thermal solution should meet or exceed the processor’s base-power needs for high-intensity use such as gaming. Confirm requirements for the exact parts rather than relying on a universal cooler-wattage recommendation (AMD CPU temperature guidance; Intel boxed processor installation and airflow guidance).
For a prebuilt or OEM PC
If overheating persists, contact the computer maker for model-specific troubleshooting. Intel directs users with OEM systems to the computer manufacturer, since cooler access and service procedures vary (Intel boxed processor installation and airflow guidance).

If liquid cooling or damaged hardware is involved
If you suspect a failed pump, see fluid leaking, find a loose cooler mount, or notice damaged hardware, stop guessing at fixes. Follow the system or cooler manufacturer’s instructions or seek repair service. Inspection procedures differ by manufacturer (Intel boxed processor installation and airflow guidance).
Clean dust without damaging components
- Shut down the computer and unplug it before cleaning.
- Use the system maker’s instructions, especially for laptops and prebuilts, where access and maintenance procedures differ.
- For graphics-card vents, ASUS recommends a suitable commercial compressed-air can or blower, held at a distance. Do not invert the can.
- Do not use strong airflow such as an air compressor, or disassemble the graphics card’s thermal module to clean it. ASUS warns against both practices (ASUS graphics-card cleaning guidance).
Choose a fix that matches the cause
Cleaning, improving case airflow, and replacing a cooler address different problems. A cleaned vent is relevant when dust is obstructing airflow; a case fan may help when case airflow is inadequate; a CPU cooler matters when CPU cooling is insufficient or the existing cooler is faulty or incompatible. Confirm the diagnosis and compatibility before buying or replacing parts. Graphics-card fan or cooler work is model-specific, and disassembly can damage the card or affect warranty coverage (ASUS graphics-card cleaning guidance; ASUS GPU fan guidance).
