If an NVIDIA driver will not install on Windows 11, first identify your graphics card, Windows version, and the installer’s exact error. Then use the matching driver from NVIDIA or your PC maker, and try Windows’ built-in update and recovery options before moving to uninstalling or rolling back a driver. The right route depends on whether this is a new installation, a failure after an update, or a Windows upgrade compatibility hold; no single fix applies to every PC.
Before troubleshooting, note your GPU, Windows version, and error
These details determine which driver is appropriate and which recovery step makes sense.

- Find the graphics adapter: right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. Record the NVIDIA model shown there. If the adapter is not listed, note what is listed instead.
- Record the Windows version: open Settings > System > About and check Windows specifications. A manually downloaded driver must match your Windows version and system architecture.
- Capture the failure: write down the installer’s full message. If Device Manager shows an error, open the adapter’s Properties and record its code. Different codes call for different actions.
- Note the timing: determine whether installation failed on a new setup, after a driver or Windows update, or while upgrading Windows.
If you use a laptop or a prebuilt PC, check its manufacturer’s support page for the exact model before installing a generic NVIDIA package. The manufacturer may provide a graphics package customized for that computer.
Choose the right source and installation route
Start with the least disruptive option that fits the problem. NVIDIA’s official driver selector lets you choose the product, series, operating system, and driver type, and provides access to previously released certified or beta drivers. Check the current listing directly; available versions can change. Use NVIDIA’s official driver page, not a third-party driver download site.

| Situation | Route to try | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| New installation or NVIDIA installer failure | Use the PC maker’s support page for a laptop or prebuilt PC; otherwise select the exact GPU and Windows version on NVIDIA’s official page. | Matches the package to the hardware and operating system. |
| You want Windows to find an offered compatible package | Use Windows Update or Device Manager’s automatic driver search. | Microsoft documents both as standard driver-update routes. |
| The downloaded package will not run or complete | Try applying the extracted package through Device Manager. | Uses Windows’ manual driver installation path instead of the package installer. |
| The problem started after an update | Try Roll Back Driver, if available. | Returns to the previous driver when a recent update caused the issue. |
| Windows 11 24H2 will not upgrade on a device covered by NVIDIA guidance | Follow Microsoft’s safeguard guidance and wait for Windows to offer the upgrade after the driver is updated. | A compatibility hold is different from a general driver-install failure. |
Fix 1: Download a driver that matches your GPU and Windows
Open NVIDIA’s official driver selector and choose the GPU product, series, operating system, and driver type that match your system. Do not choose a package based only on the word “NVIDIA”; the exact product and Windows version matter.
For a laptop or prebuilt PC, check the computer maker’s support page first. If the model is unknown, identify it in Device Manager before selecting a package. A driver intended for a different product or Windows version may not install correctly.
Fix 2: Try Windows Update or an automatic Device Manager search
Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the normal route for driver updates. It can also be a useful fallback if NVIDIA’s installer fails or you want Windows to search for an offered compatible package.

- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Review any available driver updates.
- Alternatively, right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA adapter, and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and follow any prompts.
Depending on what Windows finds, it may offer a driver or direct you to Windows Update for additional driver updates. If no suitable package is found, use the PC maker’s or NVIDIA’s official download and try the manual route below.
Fix 3: Install the downloaded driver through Device Manager
If you have a driver package from the computer maker or NVIDIA but its installer does not complete, Microsoft’s manual method is to point Device Manager to the downloaded driver files. Extract the package first if it is compressed or its files are not already accessible.
- Download the package for the exact adapter and Windows version from the PC maker or NVIDIA’s official driver page.
- Extract the files if needed, and note the folder where they are saved.
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters and right-click the NVIDIA adapter.
- Select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers.
- Choose the folder containing the extracted driver files and continue through the prompts.
Windows installs the driver if it finds an applicable newer one. If it does not, confirm that you selected the correct package and folder, then use another route rather than repeatedly applying an incompatible driver.

Fix 4: Uninstall the adapter driver and restart Windows
Use this recovery route if the installed adapter driver appears damaged or Windows cannot apply a replacement. Microsoft’s general guidance is to uninstall the device driver and restart; Windows then attempts to reinstall the driver. This is not a guarantee that NVIDIA’s installer itself will be fixed.

- Expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA adapter, and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall. If an option to remove or delete the driver package appears, do not select it unless you have already downloaded the correct replacement and understand that Windows may not be able to reuse the package.
- Restart the PC and check whether Windows reinstalls the adapter driver.
- If it does not, use the automatic search or manual installation steps above.
Fix 5: Roll back the driver if the failure began after an update
If the graphics problem started immediately after a driver update, try returning to the prior version. Microsoft Support says, “If the issue occurred after a Windows Update, reinstalling the previous driver often resolves it.” The option may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore, and administrator permissions are required.
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Follow the prompts, restart if requested, and check whether the issue is resolved.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, use the PC maker’s or NVIDIA’s official source to install an appropriate driver rather than assuming the previous version is still available through Windows.

Fix 6: Use the Device Manager error code to choose the next step
Open the NVIDIA adapter’s Properties in Device Manager and read the Device status message. The code is more useful than a generic “driver failed” description because Windows assigns different causes and remedies to different codes.
- Code 38: Microsoft says a previous driver instance remains in memory; restart the computer.
- Other codes: check Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance for the specific code. Several codes call for reinstalling the driver, but the appropriate response varies.
Do not treat one code’s fix as a universal remedy. If the message names a different problem, follow the guidance for that code and then retry the appropriate official driver route.
Fix 7: Check whether a Windows 11 24H2 safeguard is blocking an upgrade
A Windows feature-upgrade hold is not the same as an NVIDIA driver installer failing on an otherwise working Windows installation. Microsoft’s October 2024 guidance describes safeguards for certain NVIDIA display-adapter driver versions because of compatibility issues that could cause display loss after upgrading to Windows 11, version 24H2.

If your issue is specifically an upgrade to 24H2 and your device falls within the guidance, install the newer driver through the recommended route and wait for Windows Update to offer the upgrade. Microsoft cautions against forcing the upgrade with Update now or the Media Creation Tool before the driver is updated and Windows offers the upgrade. See Microsoft’s 24H2 guidance for certain NVIDIA display adapters. Its scope is version-specific; it should not be assumed to explain every driver installation failure.
Optional: Temporarily rule out download or security-software interference
NVIDIA’s undated driver installation hints recommend disabling download-accelerator utilities while downloading drivers and say background virus-protection software can prevent a driver from configuring properly. Treat these as temporary troubleshooting suggestions from NVIDIA, not a guaranteed fix: the page provides no supporting test details.
First try the less disruptive steps above. If you choose to test NVIDIA’s suggestion, use only the official driver package, temporarily pause the relevant utility or protection during installation, and restore your usual security protection immediately afterward. Do not leave protection disabled.

Use the details you recorded to avoid repeating mismatched installs: GPU model, Windows version, exact installer message or Device Manager code, and whether the issue began after an update or during an upgrade. Check the device maker’s support page if applicable, consult Microsoft’s error-code guidance for a Device Manager code, and use the official NVIDIA page for the correct package. The available evidence does not establish one universal fix; those diagnostic details determine the next appropriate step.
