A link clicked in another app uses your device’s default-browser setting; a link clicked on a webpage may be blocked by that site’s permissions; and a link meant to open a separate app follows a different route. Brave’s support documentation calls the product Brave or Brave Browser, not “Brave Origin.”
Before changing settings, note your device and operating-system version, Brave version, the app or page containing the link, the intended destination, what actually happens, and any error message. Then use the matching steps below.

Identify which kind of link is failing
Try to reproduce the issue and classify it before troubleshooting. This helps avoid changing a setting that cannot affect the link you clicked.

- Link clicked outside Brave: An HTTP or HTTPS link in an email, message, or another app opens the wrong browser—or no browser. Check the system’s default-browser setting.
- Link clicked inside a webpage: A button, link, pop-up, or redirect does nothing or displays an error. Check the affected site and its permissions.
- Link intended for another app: A social, news, or other link stays in Brave when you expected a native app to open. Check app-link behavior separately; the default-browser setting alone may not control this.
Also note whether the problem affects every link or just one site, destination, or link type. For example, if ordinary web links work but links to one service do not open its app, focus on that site’s app-link path rather than resetting Brave.

How do I set Brave as my default browser?
If a link clicked in another app fails to launch Brave, or opens a different browser, make Brave the system default. Brave’s desktop instructions use the path Settings > Get Started > Make Default. The operating system controls this routing, so check the relevant system setting if the link still opens elsewhere.
Windows and macOS
- Open Brave and select Menu > Settings.
- Open Get Started and select Make Default, if offered.
- If Brave directs you to system settings, select Brave as the default browser there. Menu names vary by operating-system version.
- Click an HTTP or HTTPS link in the original app again to check whether it now opens in Brave.
Linux: check both HTTP and HTTPS
On Debian-based Linux, Brave documents these terminal commands for inspecting the default browser and the individual web-link handlers:
xdg-settings get default-web-browserchecks the default browser.xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/httpchecks the HTTP handler.xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/httpschecks the HTTPS handler.
If HTTP and HTTPS return different applications, the two schemes may be routed differently. Brave cautions that changing one scheme handler changes only that handler. Linux desktop environments vary, so use your desktop’s default-app settings if you are unsure how to correct an association. These commands inspect settings; they do not change them.

Android
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Go to Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps).
- Tap Browser app and choose Brave.
- Retry the link from the app where it originally failed.
Brave’s example is based on a Samsung Galaxy running Android 15 with One UI 7.0. Other Android devices may use different labels; Google’s general instructions also direct users to the browser choice in default apps. See Brave’s Android instructions and Google’s Android default-browser help.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the device’s Settings.
- Go to Apps > Default Apps > Browser App.
- Select Brave, then retry the link.

What if a link inside a webpage does nothing?
If the failure happens only on a website, inspect that site’s controls before changing browser-wide settings. Brave blocks pop-ups by default, and some page actions rely on a pop-up or redirect. A site-specific permission may be involved.

- Open the affected page in Brave.
- Select the site controls beside the address bar and inspect the permissions relevant to the failed action.
- If a permission appears to be blocking the link, change it for that site only, then retry. Restore the original setting if it makes no difference.
Brave also documents site permissions and protocol handlers, which can route certain link types to external applications or services. The precise control depends on the link and site; do not turn off broad protections to troubleshoot a single failure.

A web link opening in Brave is not necessarily a browser failure: the operating system and the website both affect whether a link can hand off to a native app. Some sites require an explicit Open in app action instead of opening the app automatically.
Brave Community users have reported links opening in Brave rather than external apps. A reply in a thread posted August 11, 2026, points to a mobile setting named Allow universal links to open in external apps. However, an iOS user and an Android user in that thread said enabling it did not make all links open automatically. Treat the setting as a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix; the reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal cause or solution. See the Brave Community discussion.

If that setting appears in your version of Brave, check whether it is enabled and retry a link known to have an associated app. Also try the site’s own Open in app control, if available. The thread’s reports mention iOS 27 beta with Brave 1.94 and Android 16 with Brave 1.93.136; behavior may differ across versions, sites, and devices.
Should you reset Brave settings?
Consider a reset on desktop only if the problem began after a settings, extension, or theme change and the default-browser or affected-site checks have not helped. Brave says resetting restores several settings, including site content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. This can sign you out of sites or clear shopping-cart state. Brave says bookmarks, history, and saved passwords are retained.
- In Brave, open Menu > Settings.
- Choose Reset settings.
- Select Restore settings to their original defaults and confirm.
- Retry the affected link before reinstalling extensions or changing other settings.
See Brave’s reset-settings instructions, updated June 27, 2024. If Settings itself is unavailable, Brave’s article recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the browser; reinstalling is a more disruptive step than checking a default-browser association or a single-site permission.
What to send Brave Support if links still fail
If the steps for the matching link type do not resolve it, ask for help in the Brave Community and include details that distinguish routing from page behavior:
