The supported troubleshooting steps differ by platform: Google documents a sequence for Android, while the available Home Assistant guidance for app-specific recovery applies to Android only. For iOS, use current Apple App Store support guidance rather than trying Android fixes.
First identify where the update is failing
“Home Assistant update is stuck” can mean an update is pending or failing to download, or that the app has updated but now behaves incorrectly. These are different problems. Before changing app data, check whether other apps can update, whether the Home Assistant listing offers an update for your device, and whether the problem begins before or after opening the app.

- Several apps will not update: On Android, start with Play Store, connection, storage, system software, and date-and-time checks.
- Only Home Assistant will not update: On Android, check its Play Store listing and device availability.
- The update finishes, but the app misbehaves: On Android, use Home Assistant’s app-specific troubleshooting steps rather than treating it as a store download failure.
Android: fix general Play Store update problems first
Google recommends working through basic download checks and retrying after each one. That makes it easier to tell whether a particular change resolved the update. See Google’s basic Play Store troubleshooting steps.

- Check your connection. Confirm that Wi-Fi or mobile data is working reliably, then retry the update.
- Check available storage. Low device storage can prevent downloads or installations. Google uses less than 1 GB free as one indicator of low space, not as a universal cutoff for every device or update.
- Check for Android system updates. Install any available system update, then try the Play Store download again.
- Close and reopen Play Store, or restart the device. Retry after each action. Google notes that restarting can sometimes be necessary after an app update.
- Verify date and time. If either is incorrect, enable automatic date and time and automatic time zone, then retry.
Android: check whether Home Assistant is available for your device
If other apps update normally but Home Assistant does not, open its Play Store listing and check whether the app is available for the device. Google’s guidance is explicit: “If it’s not available, you can’t download it.” See Google’s steps for a problem affecting one app.

You can also try updating it directly: open Play Store, tap your profile icon, then go to Manage apps and device → Updates available → See details. Tap Update beside Home Assistant if that option appears. Google’s Android app update instructions also describe checking an app’s Details page for an Update button when an update is available. A Google account sign-in error can prevent automatic updates, so check the account state if automatic updating alone is failing.
Android: troubleshoot problems inside the updated app
If Home Assistant installs successfully but then behaves incorrectly, its Companion app troubleshooting guide suggests checking that Home Assistant Core, the Android app, and Android System WebView are up to date. Logging out and back in can resolve some issues.

Use the “start fresh” procedure only when simpler checks fail
Home Assistant documents a more disruptive recovery procedure for broken Android app behavior. Clearing app storage resets local app data and configuration, so do not use it merely because a Play Store download is stuck. If you decide the procedure fits your problem, follow the documented order:

- In Home Assistant, remove the relevant Mobile App integration entry. Remove duplicate entries if present.
- Restart Home Assistant.
- Log back into the Android app. If you use Trusted Networks, Home Assistant says to use credentials rather than Trusted Networks for this procedure.
Home Assistant warns against assuming that uninstalling and reinstalling is safe: “Do not assume it is safe to uninstall and reinstall as that triggers auto-backup which we are trying to avoid here.” Follow the linked instructions for the exact procedure; clearing app data is not equivalent to resolving a Play Store download issue.

iOS: keep App Store troubleshooting separate
The available platform-specific instructions here do not establish a current, verified sequence for a stalled, pending, or unavailable Home Assistant update in Apple’s App Store. Do not apply Android Play Store menu paths, Android cache or storage advice, or Home Assistant’s Android “start fresh” procedure to an iPhone or iPad.
For an iOS update that will not download, consult current Apple support instructions for App Store downloads and updates. If the app updates but has a Home Assistant-specific issue, use the iOS support options listed by Home Assistant: its Getting more help page points users to the iOS GitHub repository for bug reports and the iOS forums for general support.

When to contact support
Once basic checks do not resolve the problem, choose support based on what is failing. Home Assistant’s support guidance directs users to the Companion Apps channel or forums for configuration advice and to the platform-specific GitHub repositories for bug reports. Describe whether the update fails in the store or whether the app fails after installation, which platform you use, and whether other apps can update; those details help distinguish a store issue from an app problem.
