To troubleshoot high latency on a Dell PowerStore array, compare the affected host’s end-to-end response time with PowerStore’s appliance-, node- and volume-level performance metrics for the same time window. Then correlate latency with workload activity and host-path or fabric evidence before changing configuration. PowerStore’s reported latency is not the same as a host’s end-to-end latency, and Dell’s published guidance does not set a universal threshold for what counts as “high.”
1. Define which workload is slow and when
Start with the specific application, host, volume, protocol and time window affected. Record when the issue began and whether it is continuous or intermittent. Note any relevant recent changes, such as workload shifts, host or fabric changes, or PowerStoreOS updates.

Compare the application or host’s response time with PowerStore performance views at appliance, node and volume scope. Dell’s PowerStore: General Performance Terminology (KB 000299622, last modified 2025-03-28) explains that array performance latency is an average response time over a sampling interval; it does not represent end-to-end latency reported by an external host or device. A difference between the host and array measurements is a reason to inspect the rest of the I/O path, not proof of a particular fault. Where available, keep read and write latency distinct.

2. Correlate latency with workload measurements
For the same interval as the latency increase, review read and write IOPS, bandwidth, I/O size and queue depth. Dell defines queue depth as pending I/O requests. Looking at these measures together helps distinguish a change in the workload from a response-time problem: for example, a change in request size or volume of I/O may alter the pattern you are comparing.

Compare the affected interval with that workload’s own normal baseline. A value that is unusual for one workload may be normal for another; the cited Dell terminology does not establish a single high-latency number for every PowerStore array or application.
3. Check host paths and the storage network
Verify that the host has the expected redundant paths to both appliance nodes, and look for path faults or differences from the intended topology. Examine the relevant Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI fabric for congestion, errors, inconsistent link settings or other changes that coincide with the latency symptoms. Dell’s Dell EMC PowerStore Host Configuration Guide warns that FC SAN congestion can severely affect host I/O latency.

The guide also describes iSCSI practices such as using nonblocking switches, keeping link speed and duplex consistent across paths, and using appropriate dedicated storage networking. The surfaced guide is older, so check the current guide for the installed PowerStoreOS release, host and protocol before changing settings. Confirm that any proposed change is supported by evidence from the deployed environment rather than attributing latency to a cable, switch or other component without a corresponding fault.
4. Check whether a specific software issue matches your version and topology
Compare the installed PowerStoreOS version and configuration with Dell’s applicable release notes and support guidance. One documented issue is narrowly scoped: Dell KB 000223948, PowerStore: Overlapping I/O on a Metro volume may lead to unexpected reboot or increased latency (last modified 2025-06-18), describes increased latency or unexpected node/module restarts on PowerStoreOS 3.6.1.0 when Metro volumes are involved and ESXi host access is configured as co-located with both systems. The described condition involves overlapping I/O reaching the same volume/LBA on both systems.

Dell identifies the issue as fixed in PowerStoreOS 3.6.1.1 and above. That version reference applies to the documented issue; it is not evidence that other latency symptoms have the same cause. For an upgrade from 3.6.1.0 in this scenario, Dell advises pausing Metro sessions until the non-disruptive upgrade (NDU) completes. Follow Dell’s complete current procedure and support guidance before acting.
5. Use a representative workload if you need a benchmark
A benchmark is useful only if it reflects the production workload and the storage configuration is sound. In PowerStore: Effective Techniques for Assessing Storage Array Performance (KB 000305007, last modified 2025-12-03), Dell cautions against relying on single-threaded tests, file copies or drag-and-drop as performance assessments, and tests that do not resemble the production environment.

Dell names FIO, IOmeter, Vdbench and NFSometer as examples of workload tools. They are examples, not a guarantee that a test reproduces every application’s I/O pattern or a claim that they are Dell support utilities. Use appropriate concurrency and workload characteristics, and interpret any result in its test context rather than as a direct prediction of production performance.

6. Distinguish slow Manager metrics pages from slow application I/O
If the Capacity or Performance tabs in PowerStore Manager are slow, time out or fail to retrieve metrics, separate that symptom from evidence of slow application I/O. Dell KB 000195858, PowerStore: PowerStore Manager Capacity and Performance Metrics Tabs Slow or Timeout (last modified 2026-01-27), describes a specific metrics-collector connection-limit issue.

For that documented condition, Dell’s procedure restarts the Controlpath container on the primary appliance using a service command and checks the container status. This is a service-level operation, not a general remedy for high I/O latency. Only qualified personnel should perform it, following Dell’s current instructions and local change controls. Contact Dell Technical Support if the issue persists.
7. Escalate with evidence from both sides of the I/O path
Contact Dell Technical Support if the cause remains unclear or the incident includes path faults, alerts, node restarts or a potentially matching version-specific condition. A concise evidence package helps establish whether the delay is visible at the host, within PowerStore, or in both places.
- The affected application, host, volume and protocol, plus the incident time window and whether symptoms are persistent or intermittent.
- Host or application response-time observations alongside PowerStore appliance-, node- and volume-level metrics for that same interval.
- Read and write latency, IOPS, bandwidth, I/O size and queue depth where available, with the affected workload’s normal baseline for comparison.
- Host path and fabric topology, relevant path or network faults, PowerStoreOS version, and Metro or ESXi configuration if applicable.
- Relevant alerts, node or module restarts, and changes made near the time symptoms began.
These details support correlation; they do not establish a diagnosis on their own. Use Dell’s guidance for the specific deployment when collecting or changing system information.
