If Gemini voice commands are not working in Android Auto, first check that your phone, Gemini settings, and vehicle are eligible. Then try tapping the car-screen microphone: if that works but “Hey Google” does not, check Voice Match and Hey Google. If Gemini activates but misses your request, wait for the listening tone and reduce cabin noise. If it responds too quietly to hear, check the car’s voice-volume control. Make these checks while parked.
Check that your setup supports Gemini in Android Auto
For Gemini through phone-projected Android Auto, Google lists an Android phone running Android 11 or newer with at least 2 GB of RAM, Gemini set as the phone’s digital assistant, and a vehicle that supports Android Auto. These checks apply to Android Auto running from your phone. A car with Google built in is a different setup; if Gemini is missing there, Google’s built-in-car guidance says to make sure the vehicle software is up to date.
Try another way to start listening
Android Auto has three documented activation routes. Try the on-screen microphone first to tell whether the issue is specific to the wake word or steering-wheel control.

- Tap the microphone: Tap the microphone icon on the car display.
- Say “Hey Google”: This works only when Voice Match and “Hey Google” are turned on, according to Google Gemini Apps Help.
- Use the steering-wheel voice-command button: If your vehicle has one, press and hold it until Gemini activates. Google warns that pressing it too briefly can exit Android Auto, requiring you to restart Android Auto.
If the touchscreen microphone works but “Hey Google” does not, check Voice Match and “Hey Google” on the phone. If the steering-wheel button exits Android Auto, try holding it longer, until the activation tone.
If Gemini activates but does not understand you
Wait for the Android Auto tone before speaking. Google describes the tone as confirmation that Android Auto is listening and advises: “Start speaking after you hear the Android Auto tone.” Speaking too soon can make it seem as though Gemini ignored the command.

Reduce competing noise around the microphone. If the car uses an aftermarket receiver, check that its microphone works; contact the installer if you are unsure. Google’s guidance does not specify a replacement microphone or model.

If Gemini responds but you cannot hear it
Some vehicles have separate controls for navigation, media, and voice volume. Raise the voice volume using your vehicle’s controls and consult the owner’s manual for the exact adjustment. Changing media volume alone may not make a spoken response louder.

If only one app or task fails
Gemini in Android Auto supports tasks such as calls and messages, navigation, and media control. If voice input works for other tasks, focus on the app or task that fails rather than treating it as a general microphone problem.
- Messages: Google documents voice-based messaging in Android Auto’s messaging help.
- Navigation: Voice entry for directions is covered in Google’s turn-by-turn navigation help.
- Media: The media app must be compatible and signed in on the phone; some apps may require a subscription. See Google’s media help.
If a particular phone, car, or receiver remains the source of the problem, note its model and software versions and contact the relevant manufacturer or official support channel. Google’s general guidance does not establish universal fixes involving permissions, battery optimization, clearing app data, or a particular software update.
Keep voice commands in their proper role
Google cautions that Gemini can present inaccurate information as fact and should not be relied on for critical or safety-related matters while driving. Use voice commands for supported tasks, and do not treat Gemini as a safety authority.
