If a “Gemini skill” is ignoring instructions or giving uneven results, start by checking the Gem’s own directions, previewing a few representative prompts, and saving your changes. Google currently documents the feature as Gems; its announced transition to skills in Gemini Apps is scheduled to begin in November 2026, though rollout details may vary by account. Google’s transition page has the latest terminology and migration details.
First, check which Gemini instruction layer you mean
Google has a separate Instructions for Gemini feature for account-level preferences, but those instructions are not available in some features, including Gems. If you expect a general preference to control a Gem, put the relevant direction in the Gem’s own instructions instead. Google also notes that requests to forget or avoid topics do not always work perfectly. Read Google’s guidance on customizing Gemini’s responses.

Rewrite vague or conflicting Gem instructions
Gems are intended to apply reusable instructions to recurring tasks. Google recommends making those instructions clear and detailed. A useful set of directions can state the goal, task, background context, desired behavior, and output format; these are helpful components, not mandatory fields.

Test the Gem in preview, then save it
- Open the Gem’s editing view and review its instructions.
- In the preview window, try a typical prompt, a boundary case, and a prompt that previously produced a poor answer.
- Change one instruction at a time and rerun the prompts so you can see whether that edit changes the result.
- Click Save when you are satisfied.
- Open the saved Gem and retest it in a new conversation.
Previewing is useful for checking how edits behave, but it does not persist them. Google explicitly warns that using the preview window does not automatically save a Gem. Google’s creation tips explain the preview-and-save workflow.
Check attached knowledge files
If the Gem relies on uploaded material, confirm that the intended file is attached and that its contents support the answer you expect. For a quick diagnostic, ask a question about a specific, verifiable fact in the file, then check whether the response reflects the right source. This is a practical test; Google does not document a file-sync status indicator.

Google says Gems can use Google Drive files and NotebookLM notebooks as knowledge sources. Adding Drive files requires Keep Activity to be enabled and a connected Google Workspace. Google also says the Gem uses the most recent version of an attached Drive file and reflects later changes to that file. Check Google’s current instructions for using Gems and its custom Gem guidance.

- Gemini Live: Google’s current help says Gems cannot be used with Gemini Live. Try the Gem in a supported Gemini Apps conversation instead. See the feature’s usage guidance.
- Premade Gems: Some premade Gems cannot be copied or customized. If “Make a copy” is missing, Google says that Gem cannot be customized. Read Google’s premade Gem instructions.
- Age and account eligibility: Personal Google Account users must meet the applicable minimum age requirement—13 or the country-specific age. Account type and feature availability can also affect access. Check Google’s getting-started requirements.
What “inconsistent” answers can mean
Work through the issues that have direct checks first: ambiguous or conflicting directions, edits that were previewed but not saved, a mismatch between the intended and attached knowledge source, or use in a feature where Gems are unavailable. If the Gem still responds differently to similar prompts after those checks, Google’s reviewed help does not identify one definitive cause or promise identical wording on every run. A difference in phrasing alone does not establish that a setting is broken; compare whether the answer follows the task and uses the right information.

If the problem persists, capture a reproducible example
Record the exact prompt, the answer you expected, the answer you received, the Gem’s instructions, any relevant attached files, the date, and which Gemini app surface you used. Note whether the same behavior occurs in a fresh chat. This information helps describe the issue clearly; Google’s help pages do not prescribe a universal escalation script or list every possible backend cause.

Google says Gems will begin transitioning to skills in Gemini Apps in November 2026. Its announcement describes skills as reusable custom instructions that users can invoke with / followed by a skill’s name; it also says automatic recognition and combining multiple skills are part of the announced behavior, with @ invocation expected soon. These are announced product details, and the interface and availability may evolve. Follow Google’s transition instructions for current migration steps. Google says Gems will be recreated as skills when Gems are removed and describes an early manual recreation workflow; download any knowledge files you need and use the current official instructions if you choose to migrate early.
