A brief hitch on the first launch after an Intel Arc graphics driver update may be shader processing, not a lasting fault: Intel advises waiting until the game’s shader processing reaches 100%, which can take several minutes. Repeated stutter, a game crash, or a system freeze needs a different check. The update happened first, but that alone does not prove it caused the problem.
First identify what is happening
Distinguish a short pause during the first session from stutter that returns in the same scene across multiple runs. Also note whether the game closes to the desktop, the screen goes black, the whole PC freezes, or Windows reboots. Intel’s crash guidance covers system symptoms including graphics-driver timeouts (TDRs) recorded in Event Viewer.

Before changing anything, record the Arc GPU model, installed driver version, Windows version, game version, graphics API if known, and when the symptom began. These details help you compare the issue with the right release notes and support guidance.
For brief first-session stutter, let shaders finish
After a driver update, a game may process shaders again. Intel says to let shader processing reach 100% before judging performance; it can take several minutes depending on the game and system. Once processing is complete, performance should stabilize. See Intel’s guidance on stuttering immediately after installing an Arc driver.

This explanation fits temporary stutter, not every performance problem. If the same hitch keeps returning over repeated runs, or the game crashes, continue with the checks below.
Check the game and the exact driver release notes
Update the game and check its support information
Install available game updates, then look for the specific symptom in the game publisher’s official support resources. Intel also recommends checking title-specific support or community information when troubleshooting common game issues. See Intel’s general game-issue troubleshooting guidance.

Match the release notes to your hardware and game
Use the notes for the driver version actually installed, and check whether any listed issue applies to your GPU family and game. Known issues can be limited to particular hardware and titles, so a mention of a game does not automatically apply to every Arc card.

Choose the right driver source before reinstalling
For a laptop or prebuilt PC, check the computer maker’s support page for a graphics driver intended for your exact system. For a user-built desktop, Intel’s Download Center or Intel Driver & Support Assistant can help identify a package for the hardware and operating system. Check the package’s supported hardware and the release notes before installing; there is no single driver version that is right for every Arc system.
Intel’s driver-installer troubleshooting guidance points to the system or motherboard maker for BIOS and chipset updates. It also recommends disconnecting from the internet during a manual installation to prevent Windows Update from replacing the driver mid-process. Treat that as advice for the manual installer scenario described there, not a universal requirement for every driver update.

Try a clean graphics-driver installation for persistent faults
If the problem remains after checking the game and applicable release notes, Intel’s Arc crash guidance recommends checking for an available BIOS update and performing a clean graphics-driver installation. Follow the PC or motherboard maker’s instructions for any BIOS update; do not use a BIOS package intended for a different system.

- Identify a suitable driver for your exact GPU and system. Intel Driver & Support Assistant can help if you are unsure which package applies.
- Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Windows Safe Mode to remove the graphics driver, following Intel’s Arc crash troubleshooting instructions.
- Restart into normal Windows and install the same suitable driver or a newer suitable release.
- Launch the game and allow shader processing to finish before deciding whether first-session stutter remains.
A clean installation can clear cached shaders. Intel’s Need for Speed Heat example says the first run may stutter again as shaders are rebuilt; stutter that continues across multiple runs is a different symptom. See Intel’s Need for Speed Heat stuttering guidance.
Escalate if crashes or stutter continue
If the fault persists after checking for a game update, comparing the exact driver release notes, and following the appropriate OEM or Intel installation steps, contact the system maker or Intel Customer Support. Include your recorded GPU, driver, Windows and game versions, the graphics API if known, when the problem started, and whether the symptom is a repeatable hitch, game crash, black screen, freeze, or reboot. Intel specifically directs players with consistent Need for Speed Heat stutter across multiple runs to Customer Support.
