Start by identifying which connection is failing. A ChatGPT app that cannot open or stream responses needs network and service checks; conversations missing on another device usually indicate an account, workspace, archive, or history-setting issue; a connected third-party app that cannot find files needs separate permission, availability, and indexing checks. These problems can look similar but have different fixes.
Use the sequence below: record the exact error, check OpenAI’s service status, verify the signed-in account and workspace, compare another device or network, then investigate VPNs, proxies, WebSockets, or connected-app permissions. Stop changing settings once a comparison isolates the fault domain.

Identify the symptom before changing anything
Write down the wording shown by ChatGPT and note where it appears. “ChatGPT won’t connect,” “a network error occurred,” “my chats are missing,” and “my connected app says connected but ChatGPT cannot find my files” are different starting points.

Keep the exact date, time, time zone, device, interface, selected model, and affected workspace with your notes. Those details distinguish a temporary service incident from a local or account-specific problem.

Check whether OpenAI is having an incident
Before making repeated local changes, open OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance and check the current service status page linked from it. OpenAI identifies transient server-side failures as one possible cause of connection errors. If status shows an active incident, wait for the service to recover and retry later rather than repeatedly reconnecting accounts or changing firewall settings.
A status page can show a broad incident, but it does not prove that your particular failure is service-side. If another device and another network work normally while one environment fails, continue with the local checks below. If every interface and network fails, save the incident details for Support.
When conversations or chat history appear missing
OpenAI says, “Your chat history syncs across all devices where you’re signed in.” A different account, sign-in method, or workspace can therefore make a complete history look empty even though the chats still exist elsewhere.
Verify the account, sign-in method, and workspace
- Open the profile or account menu and check the email address currently shown.
- Confirm that you used the intended sign-in method. For example, signing in with a different identity provider can lead to a different account even when the addresses look similar.
- If your account can access more than one workspace, switch to the workspace where the conversation was created.
- Check the same account and workspace in another interface, such as the web app or a second device. A difference between environments is evidence of an account, workspace, or local-app issue, not proof that the chat was deleted.
Look for archives and search for a distinctive phrase
A chat can disappear from the regular sidebar because it was archived or is not currently visible in the list. Open Settings and inspect the archived-chat area using the current labels in your version of ChatGPT. Search for a distinctive word or phrase from the conversation; archived chats remain searchable even when they are absent from the normal history view.
Use the current in-app search rather than relying only on scrolling the sidebar. Long histories, projects, and interface changes can affect what is displayed without removing the underlying conversation.

Check the history control and reload the session
In Settings > Data controls, inspect the Chat history & training control. If the setting does not match your expectation, correct it and then refresh the app. Sign out and back in if the history still does not reload. This forces a new account session and can resolve a stale sidebar.
For a fuller account check, request a data export from the data-controls area. An export can help confirm which chats remain stored. Deleted chats cannot be restored, so do not delete a conversation while attempting to repair a display problem. When ChatGPT will not connect or says a network error occurred
Connection failures can originate with OpenAI, your device, the route between your network and OpenAI, or a security product that interrupts long-lived connections. Work from the least disruptive test to the most specific one.
Refresh, restart, and compare
- Record the error text and the time it occurred.
- Refresh the page or relaunch the app. If the app is unresponsive, close it fully and open it again.
- Try the same account in another interface, such as a browser instead of the mobile app.
- Try a second device if one is available.
- Switch networks, for example from company or home Wi-Fi to a cellular hotspot. Restore your usual network after the test.
These comparisons narrow the fault domain. If only one device fails, focus on that app, device settings, or local security software. If every device fails on one network but works on a hotspot, investigate that network. If all combinations fail, check service status and prepare a Support report.

Temporarily test network controls
OpenAI lists VPNs, proxies, secure-DNS tools, browser extensions, security filters, and firewall rules among factors that can interfere with ChatGPT. Temporarily test with one such control disabled only if you are allowed to do so, then restore the protection immediately after the comparison. Change one control at a time so you know which test changed the result.
A successful test without a VPN or filter does not mean the protection is unsafe; it means that its routing, filtering, certificate handling, or timeout policy may need adjustment. Keep the product enabled and ask its administrator or vendor for a ChatGPT-compatible configuration rather than leaving protections off.
Understand WebSocket and TLS interference
ChatGPT uses a secure WebSocket endpoint, wss://ws.chatgpt.com, for conversation updates and notifications. OpenAI’s network recommendations specify secure WebSocket traffic over TCP port 443. A proxy, firewall, web filter, or TLS-inspection appliance can block the WebSocket upgrade, rewrite the connection, or close it after it has been open for a while. The visible symptom may be a generic network error or a reply that stops streaming.
Do not alter a company firewall policy yourself. Give the network administrator the exact time and symptom and ask whether OpenAI domains are blocked or rewritten, whether secure WebSocket upgrades over TCP 443 are permitted, and whether TLS inspection or proxy enforcement is closing the session. Interpret the comparison results

These tests narrow where to look; they do not by themselves prove the root cause.

When a connected third-party app says connected but finds nothing
Authorization and usefulness are separate stages. OpenAI’s Help Center states: “A successful connection does not mean every later step will work.” A provider can be authorized while a particular model, chat, interface, plan, region, role, or workspace cannot use that app.
Check availability in the exact context
- Confirm the ChatGPT workspace selected for the conversation.
- Confirm the provider account that was authorized, especially if the provider supports multiple identities or organizations.
- Check whether the app is available for the selected model and interface. Try the supported model or interface documented by your administrator or OpenAI.
- Verify that your plan, region, role, and workspace policy permit the app. An administrator can restrict connected apps even when your personal authorization succeeded.
OpenAI’s connected-app information is documented in Connected apps in ChatGPT. Availability can change, so follow the labels and notices currently shown in your account.
Check provider permissions and synchronized scope
Review the provider’s granted permissions and make sure the source that should contain the file or record is included. For organization-managed sources, confirm that an administrator has configured the connection. A source may be connected while the expected item remains unavailable because initial indexing is still underway or because the item lies outside the configured sync scope.
Use a known, permitted item in the configured source as a test. If that item is found but another is not, compare location, ownership, sharing, file type, and indexing status rather than reconnecting repeatedly. If no permitted item is found, check the workspace and provider account first, then the app’s availability and permissions.

Stop reconnecting when the evidence points elsewhere
Repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting can add new authorization prompts without changing model availability, workspace policy, or indexing scope. After checking those conditions, review OpenAI Status and contact Support if the app remains unusable. Include the app name, selected model and interface, account or workspace, provider account, exact message, and the item or source you expected ChatGPT to find.
Platform-specific guidance
iPhone and iPad
OpenAI’s iOS failure guidance recommends relaunching the app. If crashes continue after relaunching, uninstall the app and download it again from the official App Store listing. Reinstallation is a crash-recovery step, not a substitute for checking a blocked network or the wrong account.
When reporting an iOS failure, include the device model, app language, custom keyboards, accessibility settings, when the problem began, and whether it occurs only on Wi-Fi or only with a particular feature. Android
Use the Android sidebar to access history and search, and open the profile’s About area to record the app version. For a general connection failure, follow the service-status, restart, alternate-network, and security-control tests in this article. The reviewed Android FAQ does not establish an equivalent Android-only network repair sequence, so avoid unsupported claims about special Android firewall or cache procedures.

Contact Support for persistent cross-environment failures
Escalate when the issue continues across devices, browsers or app interfaces, and independent networks, or when a connected app remains unavailable after its account, model, permissions, and workspace checks.
For browser-based failures, OpenAI may ask for a HAR file and browser-console errors with timestamps. Also record the model, conversation URL or ID, exact error, affected workspace, steps already attempted, and your time zone. Use the current Support contact path in the Help Center.
Give IT a precise managed-network report
If ChatGPT works on a cellular hotspot but not company Wi-Fi, send IT the failure time, device, interface, network name, and exact message. Ask them to inspect the route to OpenAI, domain filtering or rewriting, proxy enforcement, TLS inspection, and secure WebSocket upgrade handling over TCP 443. OpenAI also documents Voice UDP port 3478 in its network guidance; that is a configuration detail for voice traffic, not a failure-rate statistic.
Protect account and conversation data
Redact passwords, access tokens, private files, and sensitive conversation content from screenshots, HAR files, and console logs. Never send a password or access token to Support or IT. Share only the minimum conversation URL, ID, or excerpt needed to reproduce the problem.
A compact troubleshooting order
- Classify the problem as service connection, ChatGPT history, or connected-app retrieval.
- Capture the exact message, time zone, device, interface, model, account, and workspace.
- Check OpenAI Status and wait if a relevant incident is active.
- For missing chats, verify account, sign-in method, workspace, archive, search, and the Chat history & training setting.
- For network errors, relaunch, compare another interface or device, and compare Wi-Fi with a cellular hotspot.
- Test VPN, proxy, secure DNS, extensions, and security filtering one at a time, restoring protections afterward.
- For company networks, ask IT about domain filtering, TLS inspection, and WebSocket traffic rather than changing policy yourself.
- For connected apps, verify provider account, model and interface availability, plan or region, role, workspace policy, permissions, indexing, and sync scope.
- Escalate with a redacted, timestamped diagnostic report when the fault persists across environments.
This order prevents a missing-chat problem from being mistaken for a provider-sync problem and prevents repeated reconnects when the real cause is a service incident or managed network.
