What is known before launch
Activision’s PC requirements page, dated October 1, 2026, is the primary compatibility reference for Modern Warfare 4. The support hub reviewed for this guide contained requirements, editions, rewards, and feedback guidance, but no dedicated PC crash or launch-error article. Activision lists October 23, 2026 as the full release date, so beta-era reports such as “MW4 Beta won’t launch on Steam” and “Crash on Start?” should be treated as individual beta reports, not launch statistics or confirmed defects.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
No independent crash-rate study or publisher statistic establishes how common PC failures are. The practical approach is therefore to verify the published gates first, isolate the symptom, and submit a detailed report if the problem remains after launch. A beta failure can be useful for describing exactly what happened, but it cannot show that the same behavior exists in the retail build.

Compare your PC with the three official targets
Activision describes three PC tiers. The first is a compatibility floor, the second targets 90 frames per second in multiplayer at High settings, and the third targets high-quality ray tracing at upscaled 4K. The latter two are performance targets, not extra requirements for starting the game.
| Target | Operating system | CPU | Memory | Graphics card and video memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum compatibility | Windows 10 64-bit, latest update | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | 8 GB RAM | Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 970 or GTX 1060, or Intel Arc A580; 3 GB video memory | SSD with 115 GB available at launch |
| Recommended for 90 FPS multiplayer at High | Windows 11 64-bit | Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700 | 16 GB RAM | Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, or Intel Arc B580; 8 GB video memory | SSD with 115 GB available |
| High-quality ray tracing at upscaled 4K | Windows 11 64-bit | Ryzen 7 3700X or Core i7-10700K | 32 GB RAM | Radeon RX 9070 XT or GeForce RTX 5070 Ti; 16 GB video memory | SSD with 115 GB available |
Every tier requires broadband internet and DirectX 12 compatibility. Supported processors must provide AVX. Intel Arc cards require Resizable BAR. Activision warns that laptop GPU names can differ materially from desktop versions, so check the laptop manufacturer’s specification rather than assuming that a mobile model equals the desktop card in the table. Trial, beta, and Windows Insider builds may not be supported, and future mandatory updates can require additional disk space.
The table is best read as a set of separate questions. If you only need to know whether the game should be able to start, compare with the minimum row. If you want the publisher’s 90-FPS multiplayer target at High, compare every item in the recommended row, not just the graphics card. If you want ray tracing at upscaled 4K, the 32 GB RAM and 16 GB video-memory requirements matter as much as the GPU model.
One official Call of Duty Steam announcement names an Intel Core i7-8700K, while the Activision requirements article names an i7-8700. Use the Activision support article as the direct requirements reference and do not make a purchase or compatibility decision based on that discrepancy without checking the current page again.
What falling short means
Being below the recommended tier does not automatically explain a crash. Recommended specifications describe a performance goal, while the minimum row describes the compatibility floor. Conversely, meeting the minimum does not promise 90 FPS, High settings, ray tracing, or smooth behavior in every scene. Treat a mismatch as a reason to set realistic expectations and include the hardware in a support report, not as proof of a particular software defect.

Storage is a separate gate. The requirement is an SSD with 115 GB available at launch, and Activision warns that updates may require more space. A drive that has exactly 115 GB free can become too full when an update stages temporary files. Keep additional headroom where possible, but do not infer from the published figures that a particular SATA or NVMe brand is required; Activision does not specify an interface or manufacturer.
Verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot before chasing crashes
Activision’s stated security requirement is categorical: “TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.” A machine can meet the CPU and GPU requirements and still be blocked by this gate.

Check the status in Windows
- Run Activision’s Secure Attestation Wizard. It can identify failures involving TPM, Secure Boot, GPT partitioning, UEFI mode, Windows updates, or authorization.
- Press
Win+R, entermsinfo32, and review BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State in System Information. Secure Boot requires UEFI rather than Legacy boot mode. - Press
Win+R, entertpm.msc, and check whether a TPM is present, ready, and reporting version 2.0. - In Disk Management, confirm that the system disk uses GPT rather than the older MBR partition style. The wizard is the best way to see which requirement is failing.
If a check fails
Firmware menus differ by motherboard and computer manufacturer. Consult the exact manufacturer instructions before changing UEFI, TPM, or Secure Boot settings. Switching boot modes or changing a partition layout incorrectly can make Windows unbootable; do not follow a generic BIOS recipe when the vendor provides a model-specific procedure. If the machine cannot meet TPM 2.0, UEFI/GPT, and Secure Boot requirements, software troubleshooting will not remove that compatibility block.
Activision’s guidance covers Windows 10 version 22H2 or later and Windows 11. Install the current supported Windows updates before interpreting a security-attestation failure as a game bug. A wizard result that identifies authorization or an outdated Windows component should be recorded along with the exact result, rather than summarized only as “Secure Boot is broken.”
A safe diagnostic sequence
Work through these steps in order and record the result of each one. The order prevents a driver reinstall or firmware change from obscuring the original symptom.

- Describe the failure precisely. Note whether the launcher closes immediately, a security prompt appears, the game reaches the menu and then exits, or a crash occurs during a match. Record the exact error text or code, platform (Steam, Battle.net, or Xbox PC), Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, and when the problem began.
- Check the minimum tier. Verify the exact CPU and GPU models, 8 GB minimum system memory, DirectX 12 support, AVX support, the 64-bit Windows edition, and 115 GB of free space on an SSD. Check a laptop GPU against the manufacturer’s specifications, not only its name.
- Run the security checks. Use the Secure Attestation Wizard, then confirm TPM 2.0, UEFI, GPT, Windows version, and Secure Boot. Follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions for any firmware change.
- Compare the graphics driver. Activision lists AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974 on the reviewed requirements page. Driver releases can supersede those numbers; the page said an ASD-compatible NVIDIA driver was expected October 21, two days before launch. Recheck Activision’s current list rather than freezing advice to a pre-launch version.
- Restart and test one change at a time. After Windows, firmware, or driver changes, reboot, launch the game, and record whether the failure moved or disappeared. Avoid making several undocumented changes simultaneously.
- Prepare a reproducible report if the failure remains. Capture the error, the location in the game, frequency, hardware, driver version, Windows build, and exact steps that trigger it.
Keep a short test log
For each attempt, write down the date, platform, game location, change made, and outcome. “Launched once after reboot” is different evidence from “launches reliably after changing Secure Boot.” A simple log also prevents repeating a firmware change that had no effect. If the failure changes from an immediate close to a menu crash, preserve both descriptions; the change may help support staff distinguish startup and in-game paths.

The launcher opens and the game immediately closes
- Confirm the minimum CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows, DirectX 12, AVX, and SSD requirements.
- Run the TPM/Secure Boot attestation check; a security failure can stop startup before the menu appears.
- Check the current Activision-listed graphics driver, restart Windows, and test again.
- Write down whether any error appears before the launcher closes. “No message” is useful information for a report.
- Identify whether the close occurs on Steam, Battle.net, or Xbox PC, since the platform is part of a reproducible report.
A security or authorization prompt blocks launch
- Use the Secure Attestation Wizard to identify the failed item.
- Confirm Windows 10 is version 22H2 or later, or use a supported Windows 11 installation.
- Check UEFI boot mode, GPT partitioning, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot. Do not switch firmware settings blindly; use the system maker’s documentation.
- Save the wizard’s wording and the status shown in
msinfo32andtpm.msc. Exact diagnostics are more useful than a general statement that authorization failed.
The game reaches the menu but crashes when loading or joining a match
- Record the exact location: menu, shader preparation, campaign loading, multiplayer lobby, or match.
- Check free SSD space beyond the 115 GB launch figure because updates may need temporary additional capacity.
- Compare your hardware with the recommended tier if you are attempting High settings or a 90 FPS target. Falling short of the recommended tier is not, by itself, proof that the game should fail to launch.
- Report a repeatable sequence rather than describing it only as “random.” Include the mode, map if known, and the action immediately preceding the crash.
The game crashes during play
- Record how long the session lasts, the map or mode, graphics settings, and whether the crash repeats at the same action.
- Check the driver against the current official list and verify that the system is not running a trial or Insider Windows build that Activision says may be unsupported.
- Use background applications and overlays only as an isolation test. Older guidance for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) mentions closing background applications and recording or overlay tools, but that is related-title advice, not evidence that overlays are a known Modern Warfare 4 cause. Do not promise that disabling one will fix MW4.
- Do not change memory timings, registry values, or BIOS options just to test a theory from a forum post. Those changes are not established MW4 remedies and can introduce separate stability problems.
Drivers, Windows builds, and storage
The graphics-driver numbers published for the pre-launch page are AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974. Activision also said an ASD-compatible NVIDIA driver was expected on October 21. Because that release was scheduled immediately before the October 23 launch, verify the live support page on the day you troubleshoot; a newer approved driver may replace the listed version.
Keep Windows on a supported 64-bit release. Activision specifically calls out Windows 10 22H2 or later for the security path and warns that trial, beta, or Insider builds may not be supported. If the game reports insufficient space, remember that the 115 GB figure is the launch requirement and that updates can need more. The requirement is for an SSD; Activision does not specify SATA versus NVMe or a particular manufacturer.
Intel Arc users have one additional published condition: Resizable BAR is required. Confirm that feature using the system and graphics-card manufacturer’s documentation instead of assuming that an Arc model alone satisfies every requirement. Likewise, AVX support is a processor requirement across the listed tiers, so an apparently similar older CPU should not be judged by model name alone.
How to submit a useful bug report
Activision’s feedback guidance says: “A helpful bug report includes what happened, where and when it happened, and steps to reproduce what you experienced.” Apply that literally.

- State the platform and edition, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, and graphics-driver version.
- Give the exact error code or message, or say explicitly that no message appeared.
- Identify where the failure occurs and how often: every launch, after a specific menu action, or after a measurable period in a match.
- List the shortest repeatable sequence, including settings that matter.
- Attach a crash log when the official form offers the upload option. The general PC crash form reviewed requested crash timing and frequency, GPU, error code and details, and a crash-log upload, but it was displayed in a Warzone context; verify that the game selector is set to Modern Warfare 4 before submitting.
- Recheck the Modern Warfare 4 support hub after launch for a dedicated crash article, known-issue entry, or a driver update.
A strong report distinguishes observation from interpretation. Write “the process closes after selecting Multiplayer on three consecutive attempts” rather than “the renderer is broken,” unless Activision has identified that cause. Include what changed immediately before the issue began, such as a Windows, driver, or game update, but do not assume that timing proves causation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Changes to avoid treating as proven fixes
Beta search posts can reveal the words players use, but they do not establish prevalence, a shared cause, or survival into the launch build. Do not apply registry edits, memory-timing changes, system-repair commands, or BIOS modifications merely because a user post claims they worked. Such changes can create new boot or stability problems and are not verified Modern Warfare 4 remedies in Activision’s published material.
The evidence-supported path is narrower but safer: establish the exact symptom, meet the published requirements, pass TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot attestation, use the current listed driver, preserve enough SSD space for updates, and report a reproducible failure with complete hardware and timing details.
Launch-day checklist
- Check Activision’s live requirements page for any changed hardware, Windows, storage, or driver wording.
- Confirm the game is on an SSD with more than the 115 GB launch requirement available.
- Run the Secure Attestation Wizard and resolve any TPM, UEFI, GPT, Secure Boot, Windows-update, or authorization warning using vendor instructions.
- Install the current approved graphics driver, including any ASD-compatible NVIDIA release listed near launch.
- Restart Windows and test one platform and one reproducible action at a time.
- If it still fails, submit the exact error, timing, hardware, platform, and reproduction steps rather than relying on a generalized crash description.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 release on PC?

Is TPM 2.0 required to play MW4?
Yes. Activision says TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required. The security path also requires Windows 10 version 22H2 or later or Windows 11, UEFI boot mode, and GPT partitioning.
How can I check Secure Boot and TPM 2.0?
Run Activision’s Secure Attestation Wizard. You can also use msinfo32 to view BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State, and tpm.msc to inspect TPM status and version. Use your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions before changing firmware settings.
Do I need the recommended PC tier to launch the game?
No. The recommended tier targets 90 FPS multiplayer at High settings. The minimum tier is the compatibility baseline. Falling below the recommended tier can affect performance but is not, by itself, proof that the game should fail to start.
Recommended Free Tools
Which graphics driver should I install?
The reviewed Activision page listed AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974. Activision said an ASD-compatible NVIDIA driver was expected October 21, so check the current official page for a superseding version.
Is 115 GB enough storage?
Activision specifies an SSD with 115 GB available at launch, but warns that mandatory updates may need additional space. Leave extra capacity rather than treating 115 GB as a permanent total.
What information should a crash report include?
Include what happened, where and when it happened, and exact reproduction steps. Add the platform, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, driver version, error code or the fact that no message appeared, crash frequency, and a crash log when the official form allows one.
The Bottom Line
For Modern Warfare 4, start with the non-negotiable gates: supported 64-bit Windows, the minimum CPU/GPU/RAM baseline, DirectX 12 and AVX, an SSD with 115 GB available, TPM 2.0, UEFI/GPT, and Secure Boot. Then check Activision’s current graphics-driver list and test one change at a time. If the game still fails, document the exact location, timing, error, hardware, and reproduction sequence and report it through the official support channel. Beta posts can suggest search terms, but only a reproducible launch-build report can establish a current problem.
