Start by checking that the lights are in the right sound-reactive mode and listening to the intended audio source. A blocked or insensitive microphone, the wrong app input, software buffering, a faulty DMX signal path, and a fixture fault can all produce similar symptoms—so isolate the cause before replacing equipment or changing several settings at once.
First identify how your lights hear the music
Audio-reactive lights generally use one of two approaches. A standalone fixture listens through a built-in microphone and uses local mode and sensitivity settings. An app- or computer-controlled setup may use a phone microphone, a control-box microphone, or an audio input routed through software; computer-controlled fixtures may then receive commands over DMX.

| Setup | Audio source and controls | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone sound-active fixture | Built-in microphone; local sound mode and sensitivity | Sound mode, microphone obstruction or placement, and the fixture’s sensitivity setting |
| App-controlled lights | Phone or control-box microphone, depending on the product | Audio input enabled, selected microphone source, gain, and any required network connection |
| Computer-controlled DMX | Computer audio input routed through software and a USB-to-DMX interface | Audio buffer and routing, computer load, interface, DMX cable chain, addresses, and fixture settings |
Use the troubleshooting steps for your setup. Menu names and available controls vary by model; consult the exact fixture or app instructions rather than assuming another product’s settings apply.
Why don’t the lights react to music?
Check the operating mode and audio source
- Confirm sound-reactive mode. Select the fixture’s sound or music mode, not a static, automatic, or DMX-controlled mode that overrides local audio response.
- Check the microphone. For a fixture with a built-in mic, make sure it is not covered or obstructed and can pick up the music at its current position. Rockville’s Stage Panel 336 instructions specifically call out microphone sensitivity and obstruction.
- For an app, enable audio response and select the intended input. Check whether the app is listening to the phone microphone or a control-box microphone. ASAHOM’s Studio Audio RX guidance says its phone-microphone option requires the phone and controller to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Test with music playing near the microphone. A quiet track, a distant speaker, or a mode that responds only to certain sound characteristics may appear unresponsive. ASAHOM notes that response can vary by song and mode.
Adjust sensitivity or gain in small steps
If ordinary music produces little response, gradually raise the sensitivity or gain. If room noise triggers the lights when the music is quiet—or when it is off—lower it. Higher sensitivity can make quieter sounds trigger a fixture, but excessive sensitivity can also make background noise disruptive.

Controls and scales are product-specific. Rockville documents a 1–15 sensitivity range for the Stage Panel 336; that range is not a general standard. Its Best Strip 60 instructions describe multiple sound-activated modes and sensitivity adjustment. Follow your own product’s manual for the control location and values.
Why do music-sync lights lag?
Trace the computer-to-DMX signal path
In a computer-controlled setup, audio must get from its input through any routing software to lighting software, then through a USB-to-DMX interface and the DMX chain to the fixtures. A delay can arise before the DMX signal reaches the lights, so inspect the full path rather than assuming the fixture is at fault.

- Check the selected audio input and routing. Confirm that the lighting software is receiving the intended source and that virtual-routing applications are not adding unnecessary stages.
- Review audio buffering. ENTTEC identifies large audio buffers, virtual-routing apps, and an overloaded laptop as possible causes of perceived delay. Reduce unnecessary buffering or routing stages where the software allows it.
- Check computer load. Close unnecessary processes and see whether the response changes. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee of a particular latency.
- Compare another supported input path. If your equipment and software support a direct or line input, compare its response with the current route to help locate where delay is introduced.
- Check the interface and DMX chain. Confirm that the software recognizes the USB-to-DMX interface and that fixtures receive the expected control signal.
ENTTEC’s guide to computer-based music-reactive lighting notes that a full 512-channel DMX frame takes about 23 ms to transmit on the wire at 250 kbit/s. That is the transmission time for a full frame, not a measurement of end-to-end audio-to-light delay; total response depends on the rest of the system. Audio-reactive effects also should not be assumed to deliver frame-accurate choreography.
Why are the lights flickering?
Separate DMX signal trouble from a fixture problem
For a DMX-controlled fixture, disconnect DMX and test it in standalone or sound-active mode. ADJ recommends this isolation check in its LED flicker troubleshooting guidance.

- If the flicker stops without DMX: inspect the DMX signal path. Check cable condition, termination at the end of the chain where required, address conflicts, and the connections between fixtures.
- If the flicker continues in standalone mode: the problem may be with the fixture rather than the DMX settings. Random, non-patterned flickering confined to particular LEDs can point to an LED driver or LED failure. That symptom is not enough to identify a specific failed part; use the manufacturer’s service guidance or a qualified repair provider.
Verify cabling, addresses, and channel modes
With linked fixtures, check the control plan against each unit’s manual: the address, channel mode, and connection order must match the setup. In a daisy chain, connect DMX OUT from one fixture to DMX IN on the next where that is the fixture’s specified topology. Rockville’s Best Strip 60 setup instructions describe wiring and address/channel-mode checks for that model; other fixtures can use different menus and requirements.
What to check when the lights stop responding entirely
- Confirm power and operating mode. Check the power connection and make sure the selected mode allows sound response rather than leaving the fixture under another control source.
- Check the audio input. Verify that the built-in microphone is unobstructed, or that the app or computer has the intended audio source enabled and selected.
- Review sensitivity or gain. Raise it gradually if the music is not triggering the lights; reduce it if background noise is taking over.
- If using an app, verify its connection requirements. For ASAHOM’s phone-microphone option, the phone and controller must share the same Wi-Fi network.
- If using DMX, trace the control path. Check the controller configuration, interface, cable connections, fixture addresses, and channel modes against the product manuals.
- Keep audio and DMX connections distinct. Do not connect audio equipment to DMX ports; use the audio inputs and DMX connections specified by the equipment manuals.
If individual LEDs flicker randomly even when the fixture is disconnected from DMX and in standalone mode, consult the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider instead of continuing to change control settings.

Choose the right troubleshooting path for your setup
A built-in-microphone fixture has fewer components in its audio path, so begin with mode, microphone obstruction, placement, and sensitivity. App- and computer-controlled setups offer more choices of audio source and control, but add more places where a signal can be misrouted or delayed: app input selection and network requirements, computer audio routing and buffering, a USB-to-DMX interface, and the DMX chain itself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a computer-controlled system, a USB-to-DMX interface is relevant only if you have DMX fixtures and compatible software; it is not a general fix for an app-controlled LED strip. The right source—ambient microphone, phone, control-box microphone, or line input—depends on what your equipment supports and how much control and timing precision you need.
