If your Citizen radio-controlled watch will not sync, first identify its caliber and open the matching manual: reception steps and supported signal stations vary by model. Then check signal compatibility and charge, improve the watch’s position, and follow that caliber’s instructions for manual reception.
1. Identify the caliber and confirm signal coverage
“Atomic” time on a Citizen watch is time received by radio from a signal station. Citizen lists stations in Japan, the United States, Germany, and China, but which signals a watch can receive depends on its model. Find the caliber number on the case, paperwork, or watch documentation, then use that caliber’s manual to check supported stations and whether your location is within a receivable area. Do not assume that every radio-controlled Citizen supports every station.

The manual is also the authority for button sequences, crown positions, and time-zone controls. The steps below draw on H80, H82, and H820 instructions; they are examples, not universal directions for all Citizen watches.
2. Check charge and crown position
Low charge can prevent reception. In H80 instructions, a second hand moving in two-second intervals indicates insufficient charge, and the watch will not attempt reception in that state. Charge it according to its manual before retrying. H82 troubleshooting also identifies insufficient charge as a possible reason for no reception indication.

Check the crown position as well. H82 troubleshooting says the crown should be pushed to position 0. Other calibers may use different controls or have different requirements, so confirm the correct position in your manual.
3. Choose a better place and orientation
Reception can be hindered by the location, nearby interference, or movement while the watch is trying to receive a signal. For H80, Citizen advises taking the watch off, setting it on a stable surface near a window, pointing its 9:00 side toward the signal station, and leaving it still. H820 troubleshooting also recommends pointing the 9:00 position toward the station and avoiding interference.

- Try a window-side location and leave the watch undisturbed.
- If the window has wire glass, open it or move to a different location; H80 guidance warns that wire glass can interfere.
- Orient the antenna side as directed by your caliber’s manual. The 9:00 orientation is specified for the cited H80 and H820 instructions, not as a rule for every Citizen model.
4. Start manual reception using the correct instructions
Once charge, crown position, and location are suitable, use the manual’s on-demand reception procedure if your caliber provides one. For the documented H82 procedure, put the crown in position 0 and hold the lower-right button A for at least two seconds. That sequence is specific to H82; do not use it on another caliber unless its manual says to.

Citizen says the described H82 reception can take up to 15 minutes. Keep the watch as still as possible until the procedure finishes. A shorter wait or a different button sequence may apply to another caliber.

5. If reception succeeds but the displayed time is wrong
A completed reception does not necessarily fix a display that is configured incorrectly. Citizen recommends checking the selected city or world-time setting, the summer-time setting, and the hands’ reference position. For a watch that remains slightly wrong after manual reception, Citizen specifically recommends checking the reference position of the hands.
Use the caliber manual to inspect or correct those settings; the controls and reference-position procedure differ by model. H80 troubleshooting also points owners to city and summer-time settings when the time or calendar is incorrect.

6. If the watch still cannot receive a signal
If the watch is outside a station’s coverage or reception remains unavailable, Citizen says it can be set manually; the procedure depends on the model. Without a received signal, it continues to run as a quartz watch. Citizen’s H82 support page states accuracy of ±15 seconds per month without a received time signal for that caliber only; this figure should not be applied to other Citizen models.
If reception still fails after you have confirmed compatibility, charge, crown position, location, and the caliber-specific procedure, consult the manual’s troubleshooting section or Citizen support for that caliber. Persistent failure alone does not establish that the watch is defective.
