On a Windows 11 Arm laptop, first update the app and check its publisher’s support information. Many x86 and x64 apps can run through emulation, but emulation does not make an unsupported driver, peripheral feature, or anti-cheat component work. The key is to identify whether the failure is in the app itself or in something it needs from Windows or connected hardware.
1. Identify the exact failure
Before changing settings, record the details a publisher or support technician will need:

- Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version, along with the device’s processor or system type.
- Write down the app’s exact name and version, where you installed it from, and whether it offers an Arm64 build.
- Describe what fails: installation, startup, sign-in, one feature, printing, access to a device, or performance.
- Note whether the problem began after an app, driver, or Windows update.
There is no single Windows diagnostic utility that identifies every app’s Arm compatibility or driver dependencies. The symptom and the app’s support information are important clues.
2. Update the app and check for an Arm64 version
Use the app’s normal update route first. For a Microsoft Store app, open the Store and check Library for updates. For software installed from elsewhere, check the publisher’s official site for a current release, an Arm64 build, and a Windows-on-Arm support statement. The Store is not the only source of Windows apps, as Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ explains.

A native Arm64 version is generally the best starting point when the publisher offers one. Windows 11 can also emulate many x86 and x64 applications, but compatibility can vary by app and feature. Confirm that the publisher supports the version you have and that the specific functions you need work; a general statement that an app runs does not establish that every feature does.
3. Check whether the failure involves a driver
Ask whether the app needs to communicate with hardware or install a system-level component. This distinction often explains why an app opens but a feature does not. Examples include printer and scanner utilities, device-management software, some assistive technologies, antivirus or antimalware products, virtualization software, and game anti-cheat systems.
Windows Arm can emulate app code, but it does not translate a missing or incompatible driver. On Windows 11 Arm, hardware and software drivers must be built into Windows or supplied by the developer for Arm. If the required driver is unavailable, the dependent app or hardware may not work fully. Check the maker’s support page for the exact device or app and Windows Arm; if it does not state that the needed feature is supported, ask the maker about compatibility or an alternative workflow. 4. Troubleshoot peripherals by exact model
Windows 11 Arm supports most printers, including many that use Mopria, but setup and features can still depend on the printer’s drivers. If a manufacturer’s installer fails, check the printer maker’s support page for the exact model and an Arm64 driver. Microsoft’s Surface guidance for software and peripherals suggests trying Windows Settings when a manufacturer installer is incompatible with Arm.
- Connect the printer or accessory and open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and follow the on-screen setup steps.
- If Windows does not find it, or the functions you need are missing, check the manufacturer’s page for that exact model and contact the manufacturer about Windows Arm driver support.
The Settings route is an alternative setup attempt, not a way to convert an incompatible driver. Apply the same model-specific driver check to scanners and other accessories.
5. Check games and other system-level software carefully
Games and anti-cheat
Some games depend on anti-cheat drivers that are not made for Windows 11 Arm. The game may fail to launch or a protected online feature may not work even if other parts of the game run. Check the game publisher’s current support information for the exact title and release. Microsoft also points users to Works on WoA, an evolving third-party open-source compatibility list to which Microsoft contributes. Treat a listing as a useful indication, not a guarantee for every game update or anti-cheat configuration.

Microsoft identifies some third-party antivirus products, Windows-customizing apps, input method editors, assistive technologies, cloud storage apps, and virtualization software as areas that may have compatibility issues. Support depends on the app maker and sometimes on a required Arm driver. Check the vendor’s support page for the precise app version and Windows Arm. Do not disable built-in security or install an unsupported security product as a workaround.

6. Use Windows’ compatibility troubleshooter for older-app issues
If an older app has trouble after a Windows update and its publisher offers no resolution, you can try the general Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Microsoft documents it as a step for older apps in its older-app compatibility guide.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts for the affected app and test the suggested settings.
This may help with an older app’s Windows compatibility settings. It cannot supply an Arm driver or make an unsupported hardware, security, or anti-cheat component compatible.

7. Check the Microsoft 365 32-bit support change
If you use 32-bit Microsoft 365 Apps on a Windows Arm-based PC, Microsoft’s support notice says feature updates stopped in October 2025 and security updates end in December 2026. These dates apply to the 32-bit edition on Windows Arm, not to Microsoft 365 generally. Check the current notice at Microsoft’s 32-bit Microsoft 365 Apps support page, since lifecycle details can change.
To check your edition, open an Office app and look under Account or About for whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Microsoft says the 64-bit edition requires Windows 11 and that its installer detects and migrates 32-bit Microsoft 365 Apps products.
How to choose an app or device alternative
When comparing alternatives, check the exact capability you need rather than relying on a broad “compatible” label.
