When an Android automation does nothing, first identify which layer failed: the automation system (Google Assistant or Google Home routines, Tasker, or another app), the trigger, or the action. Then verify that the routine is saved and enabled, that its trigger-action combination is supported, that required permissions are granted, and that Android is allowing the app to run in the background. Finally, use run history or logs to separate a trigger problem from a failed action.
Menu names differ by Android version and phone manufacturer, so treat battery and background settings as device-specific. The sequence below lets you test one cause at a time without assuming that a single change—such as disabling battery optimization—will fix every automation.

Start by defining what “failed” means
Write down the expected event and the observed result before changing settings. An automation may fail because it never started, because it started but skipped an action, or because the action ran on the wrong device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Trigger failure: the time, voice phrase, app event, location, device event, or other starter never launched the routine.
- Action failure: the routine launched, but an individual command—such as playing audio, changing a device, or opening an app—did not complete.
- Context failure: it works while the phone is unlocked or the automation app is open, but not when the screen is off, the phone is locked, or the app is in the background.
- Target failure: the action ran, but on a different speaker, display, smart-home device, account, or household than expected.
Record the Android version, phone manufacturer, automation app and version, trigger type, whether the phone was locked, and the exact time of a test. Those details determine which settings and restrictions are relevant.

Use this diagnostic order
- Confirm the automation is enabled, complete, and saved.
- Check that the starter and action combination is supported.
- Verify account, device, and feature-specific permissions.
- Check battery, background, screen-off, and Do Not Disturb restrictions.
- Inspect history or logs and isolate the first failing step.
- For smart-home automations, check hub requirements and overlapping routines.
Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the normal trigger. A manual run can prove that an action is configured, but it does not always prove that the background trigger will work.
Google Assistant routines: check the routine itself
Confirm it has a starter and an action
Google’s routine setup requires at least one starter and one action, followed by saving the routine. Open the routine editor and verify that neither section is empty, that the intended account is selected, and that the routine has not been paused or deactivated. Re-save after making a change, then run the exact starter you normally use.
Check restrictions that can suppress a routine
Google identifies Digital Wellbeing Downtime, filters, and Do Not Disturb as settings that can restrict routines. Temporarily review those controls for the account, device, and time window in which the routine should run. If the routine works only outside Downtime or only when Do Not Disturb is off, you have found a policy conflict rather than a broken trigger.

Validate the starter-action pairing
Not every action is available for every starter. Google documents restrictions involving personal-result actions, device or manufacturer limitations, and starters or actions that require authentication. A personal-result action belongs in a personal routine; it may not be available in a household routine. Remove a suspect action and test a simple, non-personal action first. If the simple action runs, add the original actions back one at a time.
Choose the correct audio device
An automatically started routine that contains audio actions needs a selected audio device. Confirm that the routine points to the intended speaker or display, that it is online, and that the account can control it. A routine can appear to run while producing no sound if the selected device is unavailable or different from the one you are listening to.

Personal versus household Google routines
Google distinguishes personal routines from household routines. Choose the type based on who should be able to create, edit, and start the routine and on whether it needs personal results or device events.
| Capability | Personal routine | Household routine |
|---|---|---|
| Who manages it | Managed by the individual account in the personal Assistant environment. | Managed through the household’s Google Home structure by people who have the required home permissions. |
| Personal results | Supports actions that use the individual’s personal results, subject to account and authentication restrictions. | Personal-result actions are restricted; use household-compatible actions instead. |
| Device-event starters | Availability depends on the device and supported starter. | Designed for supported household device events and home-state changes. |
| Where to investigate a run | Google My Activity can show personal routine activity. | The Google Home app Activity feed can show household automation activity. |
If a routine was copied from one type to the other, rebuild it with the appropriate starters and actions instead of assuming every step will carry over.
Google Home automations: verify home access and device state
Check the home and device structure
Google Home automations depend on access to the applicable home, rooms, devices, and account. Confirm that the phone is signed into the account that owns or has access to the home, that the device appears in the correct home, and that it is online. If another household member created the automation, verify that your account still has permission to view and edit it.
Check Matter-specific hub requirements
Google’s Home troubleshooting guidance says a Google Home hub is required to add Matter devices to automations. This is a specific requirement for that Matter workflow, not a universal requirement for every Android automation. If a Matter device cannot be added or its event never starts an automation, verify that a compatible hub is present and assigned to the same home.
Look for overlapping automations
Multiple routines that run at the same time can produce unexpected behavior: one may change a device state before another reads it, or two actions may compete for the same speaker. Temporarily disable overlapping routines, test the target automation alone, and then re-enable them one by one. Give routines distinct names and time windows so the activity feed is easier to interpret.

Tasker and similar automation apps
Match the permission to the detection method
Tasker app detection can use Usage Stats access or an enabled Accessibility service, depending on how the profile is configured. Grant only the method the profile requires, then reopen Tasker and confirm that the service is still enabled. Other features may require overlay permission or a relevant monitoring setting. A profile that depends on a permission removed by Android may remain visible but never trigger.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the app’s own monitoring options
Some Tasker profiles include screen-off or background monitoring controls. Review the profile and Tasker’s preferences for options that pause detection when the screen is off, when the device is locked, or when the app is not in the foreground. Test with a simple event that does not require a plugin to determine whether the problem is in the base app or in a particular extension.
Interpret the Test button correctly
Tasker states that its Test function runs the tested task at very high priority. A task that succeeds when tested manually therefore proves that the task can execute under test conditions, but it does not establish that the normal background profile will trigger on schedule. After a successful test, lock the phone, wait for the real event, and inspect the profile’s normal execution behavior.
Permissions and access: check them feature by feature
There is no single “automation permission.” Make a checklist from the trigger and actions in your profile.
- Usage access: needed by app-detection methods that read foreground-app changes.
- Accessibility service: needed by detection or interaction methods that use Accessibility.
- Display over other apps: required by features that must draw over another app.
- Notifications and notification access: relevant to triggers or actions based on notifications.
- Location: relevant to geofences and location-based starters; background location may be governed by a separate setting.
- Nearby-device, Bluetooth, or local-network access: relevant to connected-device triggers and actions.
- Home and account access: required for Google Home devices, household membership, and shared automations.
After granting a permission, force-close and reopen the automation app, then repeat the real trigger. If Android removed a permission after a period of inactivity, recheck it immediately before testing.

Battery optimization and background restrictions
Recognize the background-only symptom
If an automation works while its app is open but fails with the screen off or after the phone has been idle, background execution is a primary suspect. Android’s restricted-app state can prevent background work; on documented AOSP versions, alarms may not trigger and jobs may not run while an app is restricted.
Review the manufacturer’s battery controls
Open the app’s battery settings and look for labels such as Unrestricted, Allow background activity, Background usage, Battery optimization, Sleeping apps, or Auto-start. Tasker’s guidance specifically calls attention to an Android Apps > Tasker > Battery > Background activity option, while noting that the location can vary by device and may be disabled by default. Your phone may use different labels or add a separate system-level “restricted” list.
Do not assume that disabling optimization is a universal cure. It is a diagnostic path for background failures, and the result depends on the Android release, manufacturer policy, app, permissions, and trigger.
Test without changing several controls at once
- Check whether the app is listed as restricted or sleeping.
- Allow the app’s documented background activity or set the least restrictive battery mode available.
- Check manufacturer features such as auto-start, memory cleaning, and adaptive battery exclusions.
- Leave the phone idle with the screen off and trigger the automation normally.
- If it still fails, restore the previous battery setting and investigate the trigger or permission instead of stacking more exemptions.
Battery changes can increase power use. Keep only the exception required for a verified need, especially on devices with aggressive vendor-specific power management.

Google personal routines
Review Google My Activity for the account that owns the personal routine. Look for an entry at the expected time. No entry points to a starter, schedule, account, or restriction problem; an entry with a missing result points to an action, target device, or permission problem.
Best Value
Google household automations
Open the Google Home app’s Activity feed and check the time of the event. Confirm whether the starter was detected, which automation ran, and which device action was attempted. If the feed shows an event but the device did not respond, troubleshoot the device connection and action rather than the starter.
Tasker execution
Inspect the profile and task execution behavior around the real trigger. Test with a visible, low-risk action such as a notification, then replace it with the intended action after the trigger is confirmed. Remember that the high-priority Test function is not equivalent to a normal background run.
Read logs as a timeline
For each test, record: trigger detected, profile or routine selected, first action started, first error or skipped step, and final device state. The first missing event is usually the layer to fix. Do not infer a trigger failure merely because the final action was invisible; the action may have run on a different output device.

Run a controlled comparison:
- Trigger with the phone unlocked and the automation app visible.
- Trigger with the phone unlocked but the app in the background.
- Trigger with the phone locked and the screen off.
- Compare the history or log entry for each run.
If only the third test fails, focus on background activity, screen-off monitoring, lock-screen authentication, and manufacturer power management. If all three fail, return to the starter, account, and permission checks. Actions that require authentication may be unavailable when the phone is locked, even when the trigger itself is valid.
Connected devices, authentication, and action limits
An automation can be correctly triggered yet unable to perform an action that requires the phone to be unlocked, a personal result, an online device, or a current account session. Replace the action temporarily with a basic notification or state change. If that succeeds, restore actions individually and note which one introduces the failure.
- Confirm the target device is powered on, online, and assigned to the expected home or account.
- Check whether the action requires a voice match, personal results, a PIN, biometric confirmation, or another authentication step.
- For audio actions, confirm the selected output device and its volume.
- For Matter devices in Google Home, verify the required hub before troubleshooting the automation logic.
A repeatable recovery procedure
- Duplicate the symptom: use the normal trigger under the conditions in which it fails.
- Simplify: keep one starter and one harmless action, such as a notification.
- Confirm the run: use My Activity, the Home Activity feed, or Tasker execution information.
- Restore dependencies: re-enable required permissions, account access, and device connections.
- Check background behavior: repeat while the screen is off and the app is backgrounded.
- Add complexity gradually: add one action, plugin, device, or condition at a time.
- Re-test after every change: record which change altered the result.
- Remove unnecessary restrictions: keep only the battery or permission exceptions that the verified profile needs.
If a minimal profile still fails in the background, the remaining suspects are usually a device-specific power policy, an unsupported trigger, or a platform limitation rather than a malformed task.
Safety and reliability limits
Google Assistant Help says routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases, and warns against creating routines whose failure could cause injury or harm. Do not use an Android routine as the only control for medical care, security, heating, cooking, access control, or any other consequential operation. Keep a manual control, independent timer, or other reliable fallback.

What to include when asking for help
A useful support request includes the phone model and manufacturer, Android version, automation system and app version, exact starter, every action, whether the device was locked, battery-management settings, granted permissions, and the relevant history or log result. State whether a minimal notification task runs. This lets someone distinguish a trigger problem from an action limitation without asking you to reset unrelated settings.
