Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your internet keeps dropping, first find out whether the problem affects one device or several, and whether Wi-Fi disconnects or stays connected while internet access disappears. Those checks help separate a device or wireless problem from a router, modem, or ISP interruption—before you reset settings or buy equipment.
First, identify what is actually dropping
Watch the device when the problem happens. The Wi-Fi symbol disappearing usually points to a lost wireless link. If the device stays connected to Wi-Fi but reports “No Internet,” it may still be communicating with the router while the router or modem has lost its upstream connection. If only one app or website stops working, the fault may be specific to that service or app rather than the entire connection; a firewall can also affect particular traffic. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide distinguishes these situations.

When the next interruption occurs, note which devices are affected at the same time. Test another phone or computer on the same network. One device failing while others stay online suggests a device setting, adapter, driver, or software issue. Several devices failing together makes the router, modem, or ISP more likely. These are clues, not proof: a shared network configuration or an app-specific issue can complicate the pattern.
Use these tests to narrow down the cause
Check whether distance or interference is involved
Move close to the router and retry the connection. Walls, floors, distance, and objects between the router and device can weaken Wi-Fi. Nearby wireless networks and other devices may also interfere. Google Nest Help notes that interference can come from traffic on your own or neighboring Wi-Fi networks, as well as sources such as microwaves or baby monitors; this is vendor guidance, not a measurement of your home’s conditions. Google Nest’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps describe these factors.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
If your router provides separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try the other band if your device supports it. Neither band is always better: range, obstacles, device compatibility, and local interference all matter. If the connection improves close to the router but drops in another room, the wireless path deserves attention before you investigate the ISP.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If possible, connect a computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and see whether it stays online when Wi-Fi drops. If wired internet works while Wi-Fi does not, focus on the wireless path—coverage, interference, router settings, firmware, or wireless hardware. This test narrows the issue; device and network configuration can still affect the result.

If Ethernet also fails, especially on more than one device, investigate the modem and ISP connection. Confirm the cable ends are firmly seated and plugged into the correct router port; try another known-good cable if available. A computer without an Ethernet port may work with a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Check whether your device can reach the router
On Windows, you can ping the default gateway to check the local connection between your computer and router. Open Command Prompt, run ipconfig, find the “Default Gateway” address under the Wi-Fi adapter, then run ping followed by that address—for example, ping 192.168.1.1. Use the address shown on your own computer rather than assuming the example applies.

Replies mean the computer reached the router; they do not establish that the modem or ISP is providing internet access. No reply alone does not prove the router is defective. Compare the result with another device and, where possible, an Ethernet connection. Microsoft recommends checking service outage information or contacting the ISP when the gateway responds but internet access is still unavailable. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi steps.
Try low-risk fixes before changing advanced settings
- Check basic wireless controls. Make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off. On Android, Google’s guidance also recommends checking Wi-Fi and Airplane mode when a connection is unavailable. Google’s Android connection troubleshooting has device-specific steps.
- Reconnect to the network. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, then reconnect. On Windows, if that does not help, use Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, choose Forget, then connect again and enter its password. Menu wording can vary by Windows version.
- Try nearer the router or another supported band. Retest in the location where drops occur, then compare with a position closer to the router. If the router has separately named 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other one if supported by your device.
- Restart modem and router according to their instructions. A common sequence is to unplug both, wait at least about 30 seconds, restore modem power first, wait for its lights to settle, then restore router power and allow both devices to start. A combined modem/router needs only one restart. A battery-backed modem may need its backup battery removed as its instructions specify. Restarting interrupts everyone using the network. Microsoft describes this sequence in its Wi-Fi guidance; equipment instructions or ISP advice should take precedence because procedures differ by model.
- Run Windows’ built-in troubleshooter. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Network and Internet, then choose Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, then select Network Adapter or Internet Connections. Labels can vary with updates.
If only one device keeps disconnecting
If other devices remain online on the same Wi-Fi, concentrate on the affected device. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled, forget and rejoin the network, and install available operating-system updates. On Windows, check for an updated wireless adapter driver through Windows Update or the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support channel.

For frequent Windows drops, Microsoft also recommends checking wireless adapter power-saving settings. In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, open the wireless adapter’s properties, and, if a Power Management tab is available, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. The exact options depend on the adapter and driver. If a particular app or website alone fails, test another app or site before changing network settings.
Treat Windows Network reset as a last resort, not a routine first fix. Microsoft warns that it removes installed network adapters and their settings; VPN or virtual-switch software may need to be configured again afterward. Find it under Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset in Windows 11, or Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset in Windows 10. Microsoft’s guide includes additional adapter and channel checks.

When to contact your ISP
Check your ISP’s outage information and contact its support team if multiple devices lose internet together, wired access also fails, or interruptions recur after you have restarted the equipment. Share what you observed: whether Wi-Fi remained connected, whether Ethernet worked, whether other devices were affected, and what the modem’s status lights showed. That evidence helps distinguish an upstream service problem from a local wireless one. Google Nest Help likewise advises contacting the ISP if modem problems persist or service issues recur. Google Nest troubleshooting guidance.
Do not buy a replacement router just because a device reports “No Internet.” First establish whether the fault is limited to Wi-Fi, one device, or the upstream connection; the tests above point to which part of the network needs attention.
