Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If an AI skill gives different answers to what looks like the same question, first reproduce the difference before changing anything. Record the exact instructions, input, context, model, settings, and tool behavior; then isolate whether the cause is randomness, a changed request, missing context, an integration, or a model limitation.
1. Reproduce the inconsistency
“Inconsistent” describes what you observed; it does not identify the cause. Save one failing example and repeat it several times under the same conditions. Include the full skill instructions and version, user input, relevant conversation history, model identifier, settings, environment, and any tool inputs and outputs.

Compare the results and note where they first diverge. If identical trials produce different answers, the case is variable. If they fail in the same way each time, look first for a repeatable problem in the instructions, supplied data, or integration. This reproduce-first approach is project guidance from Apache Magpie’s skill-debugging guide, not a universal platform standard.
2. Check what the assistant can actually diagnose
If you ask ChatGPT why a feature or skill failed, its answer is not a live inspection of the service. ChatGPT cannot see its system status, network connections, internal operations, or logs. The OpenAI Help Center says, “The most reliable way to test a feature is to ask ChatGPT to perform an action directly.” Try the task itself and inspect the result rather than relying on a self-diagnosis. If accumulated conversation context may be affecting the answer, repeat the test in a new chat. This guidance applies to ChatGPT; it should not be assumed to describe every AI platform. 3. Compare the complete request and settings
Two prompts that look identical on screen may not be identical at runtime. For a Playground/API discrepancy, compare both the complete request and the environment settings before editing the skill.
- Instructions and context: compare system and developer instructions, user input, conversation history, and any reference material or retrieved content.
- Model and parameters: check the model name, temperature, top_p, max_tokens, frequency_penalty, and presence_penalty. Also check environment presets and API defaults that may be omitted from a visible request.
- Formatting: look for whitespace, hidden characters, indentation, line endings, and JSON escaping that can change what the model receives.
Temperature above zero introduces randomness, and using zero may help make trials more repeatable; it does not guarantee strict determinism across systems or circumstances. OpenAI’s API Help Center lists these settings and request differences as checks when Playground and API results do not match. See OpenAI’s Playground troubleshooting guidance.

4. Refine the instructions one change at a time
Once the request and runtime are controlled, make the task easier to follow. State what the skill must do, include the context it needs, make constraints explicit, and specify the desired output. Review the result, change one plausible cause at a time, and preserve the previous instruction version so you can compare fairly.

Read the prompt engineering guide. Avoid changing instructions, model, parameters, and retrieved content all at once: even if the result improves, you will not know which change helped.

5. Keep a small repeatable evaluation
Save representative inputs with expected outputs or clear pass/fail criteria. Run the same cases before and after a change, record which failures remain, and watch for regressions in cases that previously worked.
OpenAI’s optimization guide describes 20 or more question-and-answer examples as a useful baseline for its workflow, not a universal minimum. It also warns that rough automatic similarity scores do not necessarily match human judgment. The guide’s examples—including a BLEU score change and a starting example count for fine-tuning—are workflow illustrations, not promised results or general success rates. 6. Match the fix to the failure
Choose the least complex change that targets the observed failure, then check it against the same evaluation cases. Context and model behavior are different levers and may need separate or combined adjustments.
- Necessary facts are missing, stale, or private: provide suitable reference text or retrieve relevant context. Check that retrieval returns the right material; irrelevant results can overwhelm useful context.
- The needed context is present, but instructions or output vary: clarify the instructions and add examples of the desired behavior, then evaluate the revised version.
- A persistent behavior problem remains: consider fine-tuning only if repeatable evaluations show that simpler instruction or context changes are insufficient.
OpenAI frames context optimization and behavior optimization as distinct approaches. Retrieval and fine-tuning both add work and regression risk, so keep comparing changes against saved examples rather than assuming added complexity will help. OpenAI’s optimization guide discusses these trade-offs.
7. Follow the first point of failure
When the prompt, context, and settings appear correct, inspect the tool boundary. Compare the intended tool call with its actual arguments and response; if either is missing or unexpected, review the integration and its logs.
If the request and tool behavior are sound but the model repeatedly fails the same capability, treat that as a possible model limitation. Test a different model or workflow against the same evaluation cases. These prompt, tool, and model categories are a useful diagnostic framing from Apache Magpie’s project guidance, not a provider-independent formal taxonomy. Apache Magpie skill-debugging guide.
