How screen sharing differs from remote control
Screen sharing lets a helper view what is on your display while you perform the troubleshooting steps yourself. Remote control lets the helper interact with your PC. In Quick Assist, the helper’s request for full control is separate from the request to share your screen, so you can share the view and still decline control.

Use Quick Assist with a trusted helper
Microsoft says Quick Assist is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact installation route and sign-in requirements can vary by Windows version and organizational policy, so check that the app is installed and permitted on both PCs before arranging a session. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance says the helper needs a Microsoft account and an internet connection. Quick Assist communicates over HTTPS port 443, according to Microsoft Learn.

- Open Quick Assist on both computers. The person providing help selects Help someone and signs in if prompted. They generate a six-digit code and send it only to the intended recipient.
- Enter and submit the code. On the PC receiving help, enter the helper’s code in Quick Assist and submit it.
- Approve screen sharing. Review the prompt and choose Allow only if you recognize the helper and expected the session. The helper can then see your screen.
- Keep control while following instructions. Use Quick Assist’s annotation and chat features to clarify what the helper is pointing out or describing, then make the changes yourself.
- Decline any request for full control. If the helper asks to control the PC, you can refuse. If you previously granted control, you can cancel it; you can also end the session when the conversation is finished.

Protect yourself from unwanted access
A six-digit code is part of the connection process, not a reason to trust whoever asks for it. Microsoft warns that tech-support scams use pressure tactics. Its guidance is to allow a connection only when you initiated contact with Microsoft Support; do not share a code or approve a control request from an unsolicited caller claiming to be support.
