If a website screenshot MCP server cannot reach localhost, first identify which process is making the connection. localhost refers to the loopback interface visible to that process—not automatically to your workstation. Then check whether the server uses stdio or HTTP, where the caller and server run, and whether the address, port, and HTTP rules match.
Start by locating the caller and the server
Map the connection before changing addresses or opening ports:

- Caller: Which process requests the screenshot—an MCP client, gateway, browser, or hosted assistant?
- Server: Which process runs the screenshot MCP server, and what starts it?
- Network boundary: Are they on the same host, in separate containers, behind a proxy, or on different machines?
- Address and transport: Is the connection stdio or HTTP? If HTTP, what exact URL, endpoint path, hostname, and port does the caller use?
A successful connection from a terminal on your workstation does not prove that a container or remote service can reach the same address. Diagnose from the environment of the process that actually calls the server.
Check whether the server uses stdio or HTTP
Stdio: the client launches a subprocess
With stdio, the MCP client starts the server as a subprocess and exchanges protocol messages over standard input and output. There may be no HTTP URL, localhost address, or listening port to fix. Check that the client can launch the configured command, that the executable and arguments are valid in the client’s environment, and that the process stays running. The MCP transport specification permits logs on standard error; keep diagnostic output off standard output, which carries protocol messages.

If a client is configured to launch a stdio server but you are troubleshooting an HTTP URL, verify that you are investigating the connection the client actually uses. The MCP specification revision cited here is 2024-11-05; clients and servers can support different protocol revisions, so consult the relevant implementation’s documentation for version-specific configuration.
HTTP: the caller must reach a URL
For HTTP, record the complete endpoint URL, including its path, and identify the process that makes the request. An MCP Apps testing example uses http://localhost:3001/mcp; that is an example, not a universal port or endpoint path. Use the port and path your server actually serves.
Check containers, listeners, and port forwarding
When the server or caller runs in a container
Inside a container, localhost normally refers to that container’s own network namespace. If the caller is in a container and the server runs on the host, the caller’s localhost does not automatically mean the host. Use an address reachable from the caller, and configure host/container networking or port publishing as required by the environment. If both processes are containers, confirm they share a network path and use the server’s reachable service address rather than assuming their loopback interfaces are shared.

Also distinguish the port the server listens on inside a container from the port exposed to the caller. If a mapping translates one port to another, the caller must use the externally reachable port. A process bound only to a container’s loopback interface may not be reachable through a host-published port. Do not expose a listener broadly just to make a test pass; use the narrowest network access that meets the deployment need.
Verify the actual listener
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on the expected port.
- Check the bind address as well as the port: loopback-only binding and a network-interface binding are not interchangeable.
- Make the test from the caller’s environment, using the exact hostname, port, and path configured in the MCP client.
- If a gateway starts the server, determine whether the gateway connects to a remote endpoint URL or launches a local stdio command. The gateway’s location and execution mode affect what “local” means.
Check IPv4 and IPv6 loopback addresses
localhost can resolve to IPv4 127.0.0.1 or IPv6 ::1. These are distinct loopback endpoints. A client may try one family while the server listens only on the other, producing a connection failure even though both sides use the word localhost.
- Inspect the server’s actual listening address and the destination address selected by the caller.
- Check whether the client, proxy, or port-forwarding layer pins a particular address family.
- Make the server bind and caller connect consistently, using an explicit IPv4 or IPv6 loopback address when appropriate for that setup.
The MCP Inspector’s web-client documentation describes an implementation-specific case on glibc Linux where Node resolves localhost to IPv6 first while a forwarded client pins IPv4. Treat that as a useful diagnostic example, not proof that every screenshot MCP server or operating system behaves the same way.

If the HTTP request arrives, check host and origin validation
A request can reach the server’s HTTP layer and still be rejected. The MCP Python SDK documents DNS-rebinding protections that validate the HTTP Host header and, when present, the Origin header. In that SDK’s documented behavior, an unaccepted Host can produce HTTP 421, and an unaccepted Origin can produce HTTP 403.

If logs show a Host or Origin rejection, allowlist only the hostnames and browser origins actually needed for the deployment. These status codes and checks are specific to the documented SDK behavior; other implementations may validate requests differently.
Check reverse proxies and TLS termination only when present
If a reverse proxy terminates TLS and forwards plain HTTP to the MCP application, confirm the proxy and application agree on the public scheme and endpoint. The MCP Python SDK deployment guidance notes that trusted forwarded headers may be needed so the application generates redirects using HTTPS rather than downgrading to HTTP. Trust forwarded headers only from the proxy you control. Also verify that the client’s endpoint path and trailing-slash behavior match the route the server actually provides.

For a remote assistant, use a reachable endpoint—not your workstation’s localhost
A hosted assistant runs outside your workstation’s network namespace, so its localhost is not your machine. The Model Context Protocol MCP Apps testing documentation states: “Remote hosts like Claude.ai cannot reach localhost.” For local testing, that guide describes starting a local HTTP server, running npx cloudflared tunnel --url http://localhost:3001, then configuring the remote host with the generated HTTPS URL and the MCP endpoint path. The generated URL changes when cloudflared restarts. This is a documented testing approach, not a general production deployment recommendation.
Before using a tunnel, confirm that a remote caller is really the issue. If the MCP client and server should share a process or network, fix that local connection rather than creating an unnecessary public route.
