Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by recording your NAS model, DSM version, package name and version, whether you’re installing or updating, the exact error message, and when the problem began. Synology package failures do not share one universal cause: the right fix depends on whether the package is unsupported, the NAS cannot reach Package Center, system-partition capacity is low, or a trust setting is blocking installation.
1. Record the details before changing settings
Capture these details so you can choose the right troubleshooting branch—and provide useful information if you contact Synology Support:

- NAS model and DSM version.
- Package name and version, if shown.
- Whether this is a first-time installation or an update.
- The exact error text, plus when the failure began.
- Whether other packages can install or update, and whether the NAS can access the internet.
2. Check whether the package supports your NAS and DSM version
If a package is missing from Package Center, that does not necessarily mean Package Center is broken. Synology says availability can depend on the DSM version and hardware, and some packages are limited to particular NAS models. Check the package requirements for your selected model and DSM version in Synology’s Download Center before trying another installation method. Synology’s package information also explains package availability and requirements.
3. If the error says “Connection Failed,” troubleshoot network access
Synology uses “Connection Failed” for a Package Center connection problem. Check whether the NAS has internet access, then review Control Panel > Network > Network Interface. Synology’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking DNS, time synchronization, and firewall or proxy filtering. See Synology’s Connection Failed troubleshooting steps.

Check DNS and domain forwarding
If DNS appears to be the issue, Synology suggests manually configuring DNS servers, including 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4; its guidance lists different DNS servers for users in China. If the NAS is joined to a domain, check whether the domain’s DNS forwarding is configured correctly.
Check the NAS clock and network filters
Enable NTP time synchronization so the NAS clock is accurate. Also review firewall and proxy rules that could block Package Center traffic. For firewall allowlisting, use Synology’s current endpoint list rather than guessing: the DSM 7 guidance lists domains used for downloads, updates, accounts, and package updates, and says to allow the listed URLs through ports 80 and 443. Consult Synology’s endpoint and port list.

4. If the error says system capacity is insufficient, check the system partition
The free-space figure in Storage Manager describes available space on a storage volume; Synology says it does not show free space in the system partition. So a NAS can have volume space available and still report insufficient system capacity when installing or updating a package.

Synology identifies possible causes such as output stored in system paths, container path mappings, detailed system logs, and some package logs. Follow Synology’s system-capacity cleanup guidance rather than deleting files at random. The vendor also advises considering a restart as part of its troubleshooting steps.

5. Use Manual Install only when it fits the problem
If the NAS cannot download packages itself, or you need a specific package version, Synology documents manual SPK installation. Download the package for your NAS model to a computer, then open Package Center > Manual Install and upload the file. This works around NAS-side downloading; it does not bypass model or DSM compatibility requirements. Obtain the SPK from Synology or a publisher you trust, and verify that it fits your device before installing it. Synology Download Center provides downloads and device-specific information; Synology’s Package Center help covers package management.
6. Review publisher trust settings for third-party packages
If installation is blocked for a package from outside Synology, check Package Center’s publisher-trust and package-source settings. Menu labels and available choices differ across DSM versions. Synology’s DSM 6 help describes options for Synology-only packages, Synology plus trusted publishers, or packages from any publisher; DSM 7 help documents package sources and update controls. Use packages from publishers you trust, and avoid relaxing trust requirements simply to make an install proceed.

7. Back up before considering a reset
A reset is a last resort, not a routine fix for a package error. Synology recommends backing up system configuration and packages before a Mode 2 reset. A factory reset erases data, so back up configuration, packages, and shared-folder data to another device or a reliable destination first. Some packages may not be restorable through Hyper Backup and may need to be reinstalled manually; licensed packages may require license keys. Follow Synology’s reset guidance and contact Synology Support if the vendor’s troubleshooting steps fail or you are unsure what a reset status means.
