If a Linux app crashes, freezes, or is missing a feature, first identify exactly what failed, then check its logs, installed version, package source, and—if it is sandboxed—relevant permissions. These problems can have different causes, so avoid assuming that reinstalling the app or running one command will fix them.
First distinguish a crash, a freeze, and a missing feature
A crash means the application exits unexpectedly. A freeze or hang means its window remains open but stops responding. A missing feature is different: the app runs, but a control, device, integration, or capability you expect is unavailable. The distinction determines what evidence to collect and what to investigate.

- Write down what you were doing just before the problem and the exact action that reproduces it.
- Note whether it happens every time, and whether only this app or the whole desktop is affected.
- Record your Linux distribution and release, application name and version, installation source or package format, and desktop environment and session type if known.
- Copy any exact error message and note when the problem occurred.
Commands and remedies vary by distribution, session, app, and package source. Do not mix package-manager instructions from different distributions.

Check logs and crash records
Use the system journal when available
On a systemd-based installation, journalctl reads entries from systemd-journald. It can filter records by boot, unit, and structured fields; the journalctl manual describes its options. Start by checking entries around the time of the incident, narrowing the results if you know the relevant service or unit. What you can read depends on journal access and system configuration: users generally see their own entries, while broader system logs may require administrator access or membership in a privileged group. Journals may also be volatile rather than retained across boots.

Look for a recorded crash
If the application exited, check whether the system uses systemd-coredump. Run coredumpctl list to look for recorded crashes, then coredumpctl info with the relevant record to inspect its metadata. If a dump is accessible and you have a debugger installed, coredumpctl debug can invoke one. See the coredumpctl manual for details.
A crash record does not guarantee that a usable core dump exists: it may be absent, truncated, inaccessible, or removed under a retention policy. Do not publish a raw core dump by default; it can contain process memory. Review logs for personal information before sharing them, and use the project’s supported reporting channel.

For a missing feature, verify the app build before changing settings
Find out where the app came from: a distribution repository, Flatpak or Snap store, vendor package, AppImage, or another channel. Check its installed version against the feature’s documented minimum version and the publisher’s release notes. Different distributions and package formats may ship different versions, so a feature missing from one build does not establish a general Linux limitation.
The Flatpak technical overview discusses distribution fragmentation, apps missing from some distribution repositories, and how older packages can complicate reproducing bugs that upstream has already fixed. The same practical check applies broadly: identify the build and version before concluding that the app itself lacks a feature.

Ubuntu illustrates why package source matters: its App Center offers applications in Snap and Deb formats, with format-specific updates and permission controls. Ubuntu documents that Snap apps are usually sandboxed and that Snap permissions can be managed in Settings, whereas Debian package permissions cannot be changed through those app settings. This example applies to the documented Ubuntu setup, not every Linux distribution; see Ubuntu’s app installation guidance and permission management guidance.
Check sandbox permissions and desktop integration
A sandbox may restrict access that a feature needs, such as host files, a device, network access, a display protocol, or a desktop service. For Flatpak, the sandbox permissions documentation explains that apps have limited host access by default and that portals provide selected access paths, including file selection, printing, notifications, screenshots, and network status.

- Identify the package format and consult that format’s own permission model; Flatpak-specific steps do not apply automatically to Snap, distribution packages, or AppImage.
- Determine which resource the feature actually needs, such as a particular folder, device, or service.
- Inspect the app’s current permissions and grant only the access needed to test that feature.
- If the app maintainer documents a limitation or recommends another package format, compare it as a controlled test rather than changing several system settings at once.
Avoid blanket access such as exposing the entire home directory or all devices. Broader permissions have security implications, and an intentionally restricted or unsupported integration may not be fixed by granting more access.

Compare changes and update without destroying clues
If the problem began after an update, record the versions before and after and note whether the app, runtime, driver, desktop environment, or wider system changed. Check the publisher’s release notes and existing issue reports. Preserve relevant logs and current settings before attempting a rollback, downgrade, or configuration reset; the commands and recovery behavior differ across distributions and package formats.

Security status and feature availability can also move on different schedules. For example, Ubuntu’s fixed-release security updates generally backport security fixes rather than introducing new functionality, although some packages receive feature updates through a separate process. Consult the applicable Ubuntu security maintenance documentation for the relevant release and package rather than treating that policy as universal across Linux.
If comparing package formats is safe and the publisher supports them, change one variable at a time and record the result. Consider version and release cadence, who maintains the build, its sandbox and permission model, update and rollback behavior, and whether the app publisher supports that format. No one format is best for every app or distribution.
Report a reproducible problem to the right maintainer
If the cause remains unclear, report the issue to the app maintainer or the package maintainer responsible for the affected build. For distribution or system components, follow the distribution’s reporting guidance; systemd’s debugging documentation asks for complete diagnostic information, including journal output and kernel command-line context where relevant.
Include the distribution and release, kernel and desktop/session when relevant, app version and package format, exact reproduction steps, whether the failure is repeatable, a timestamped log excerpt, and what changed before the issue started. If you safely tested another supported package format or session, state the result. Review logs for private information before posting; do not attach a raw core dump publicly unless the project’s reporting process specifically calls for it and you understand what it may contain.
Avoid risky universal fixes
Do not delete all application configuration, run the app as root, disable its sandbox, install random libraries from third-party sites, or apply a fix written for a different distribution without a specific reason. These actions can increase risk, remove user data, or erase useful diagnostic evidence. Prefer a narrow, reversible test, preserve the original details, and know how to undo any permission or configuration change.
