If your Google Home or Nest speaker won’t respond, first check that it has power and its microphone isn’t muted. Then use the speaker’s wake-word indicator to tell whether it heard “Hey Google”: no indicator points to a power, mute, or detection issue; an indicator without a useful answer points toward the request or Wi‑Fi. Restart the speaker before changing network settings, and leave a factory reset until other steps fail.
1. Check power and the microphone switch
- Make sure the speaker is plugged into a working wall outlet. If it shows no lights or other response, check the outlet and power connection before troubleshooting voice recognition.
- Check that its microphone is on. Switch and button locations differ by model, so use Google’s microphone control instructions for your speaker. On the 2026 Google Home Speaker, orange lights indicate that the microphone is muted; do not assume the same indicator or control location applies to every model.
2. Restart the speaker
Disconnect the speaker’s power cable from the power source, wait briefly, and reconnect it. This simple restart is Google’s first general troubleshooting step after checking power and the microphone.

3. See whether it hears “Hey Google”
Say “Hey Google” and watch or listen for the device’s response indicator. Many Google smart speakers show spinning or blinking LED dots; the 2026 Google Home Speaker uses a solid white light ring, while Nest displays show four colored dots. Indicator behavior varies by device.

If there is no wake-word indicator
Recheck the microphone switch and power, then try the wake phrase again. If the speaker still gives no indication, follow Google’s steps for a speaker that does not respond to “Hey Google”. Not seeing an indicator means the speaker may not have detected the phrase; it does not by itself establish a Wi‑Fi problem.

If the indicator appears but the answer is missing or unhelpful
The speaker detected the wake phrase, so try the request again, speak more slowly, or phrase it another way. You can also say, “Hey Google, repeat the question.” If it cannot complete commands or appears offline, check Wi‑Fi next.
4. Check Wi‑Fi when commands do not complete
- Check whether another device can connect to your home Wi‑Fi. If it cannot, troubleshoot the network first.
- Confirm that you are using the correct Wi‑Fi password and keep the speaker within 4–6 m (15–20 ft) of the router while diagnosing setup.
- If the network itself is unavailable, reboot the router, then restart the speaker and try again. Google’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting steps cover further checks.
- As an advanced diagnostic, try connecting the speaker to a phone hotspot temporarily. Google notes that hotspot support is not guaranteed. If the speaker connects to the hotspot, that indicates it can use Wi‑Fi and points toward an issue with the home network; it does not identify the precise cause.
5. Set it up again after a Wi‑Fi change
If you changed your network name, password, or internet provider, the speaker may need to be set up again in the Google Home app. Follow Google’s instructions for reconnecting after a Wi‑Fi change. Google says that if the Assistant can answer questions, the device is connected to Wi‑Fi.

6. Factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset returns the speaker or display to its default settings. Google warns that it clears device data, disconnects the device from home members, and cannot be undone. The procedure depends on the exact model: for example, Google’s instructions for Nest Audio and second-generation Nest Mini begin by switching off the microphone and then holding a specified area, while the first-generation Home Mini has a reset button on its base. Identify your model and follow its official reset instructions; do not try a button sequence for a different device.
