If a website chat widget is missing, blank, or stuck loading, first find out whether the problem affects one visitor, one browser, or the whole site. Then check the correct widget installation, browser console and Network errors, security and consent settings, and possible page-code conflicts—in that order. Avoid changing a content security policy or disabling privacy protections until you know what is actually blocking the widget.
Start by narrowing down where the failure occurs
Before changing code or browser settings, establish the scope. A widget that fails for one person in one browser calls for different checks than one that fails for every visitor on every page.

- One visitor or many? If only one person is affected, begin with that browser profile, its extensions, and its settings. If several people report the problem, prioritize the site deployment, vendor configuration, consent integration, and network policy.
- One page or all pages? A failure on a single page points toward that page’s template, scripts, or styles. A failure site-wide points more toward the shared embed, account settings, or a site-wide policy.
- One browser or several? Compare another supported browser or a private window. Differences help isolate browser-profile causes from site-wide causes.
- Does the script fail, or does the widget stay hidden? A missing or blocked script is different from a script that loads while the widget is suppressed, cannot connect, or is broken by the host page.
Record the affected page URL, browser and version, approximate start time and timezone, and whether a site deployment, consent-banner change, tag-manager edit, CSP update, or extension installation happened around then. These details make the later checks and any support request more useful.
Confirm the exact widget and its deployment
Identify the provider and the exact widget generation before following setup instructions. A vendor may offer multiple products whose embed snippets, settings, and APIs are not interchangeable. For example, Zendesk distinguishes Chat-only, Web Widget (Classic), and newer Web Widget configurations; use instructions for the installed product, not a similarly named one. - In the provider’s settings or account, confirm that the widget or chat service is enabled.
- Inspect the affected page’s current source or deployment to confirm that it contains the correct vendor snippet. Check that the page being tested is the published version, not an unpublished editor preview or a stale cached page.
- If the site uses a tag manager or a content-management integration, confirm that the tag is firing on the affected page and has not been restricted to a different URL, audience, or consent state.
- Check any custom code that calls the widget’s API. It must run after the widget loader is available. Zendesk specifically says scripts using its
zEAPI should come after the snippet; other vendors may have different requirements. - After publishing a correction, reload the live page and test again. Zendesk permits its Chat embed in the page head or at the end of the body, but placement requirements for other providers may differ.
Zendesk’s documentation advises: “Even though the snippet script is very lightweight, it’s best to avoid inserting scripts that will block the browser from continuing to render a web page until that script has loaded.” The practical point is to use the vendor’s supported placement and avoid making the chat loader block the rest of the page.

Use browser developer tools to see what failed
Developer tools can distinguish a missing embed from a JavaScript error, a policy block, or a failed connection. In most desktop browsers, open them with F12 or by right-clicking the page and choosing Inspect. Keep the tools open, reload the affected page, and reproduce the failure.
Check the Console
Look for errors or warnings that appear at the time the widget should load. Note JavaScript exceptions that name the vendor widget or the host page, and CSP messages that identify a violated directive and the requested domain. An error naming unrelated page code may still matter if that code prevents the widget from initializing.
Check the Network panel
Filter requests for the widget provider or scripts, then reload. Look for a request that never appears, is blocked, or returns an error. If the script loads, look for later connection failures, including websocket errors. Record the requested host, status or browser failure text, and timing. Do not assume that a loaded script means the chat is fully connected: the widget may fail at a later step or be intentionally hidden.

Intercom’s CSP guidance recommends reproducing the issue and inspecting console messages for policy violations. Its required hosts vary by feature and region, and live chat can use a separate websocket domain. Those details apply to Intercom; use the current instructions for the provider actually installed rather than copying another company’s domains.
Check content security policy and network blocking
A restrictive content security policy (CSP), firewall, proxy, or managed-browser rule can block a widget’s scripts, connections, images, or websocket traffic. Change a policy only after identifying the blocked resource and the directive involved.
- Read the browser’s exact error. It may name a directive such as
script-srcorconnect-srcand the host the page attempted to reach. - Compare that resource with the installed provider’s current official allowlist. Required hosts can differ by product feature and region.
- Find where the blocking rule is applied: the site’s response headers, a proxy or firewall, a managed platform, or an organization’s browser policy.
- Ask the responsible site administrator or network administrator to make the narrow change required by the evidence, then reload and retest.
Intercom recommends auditing policy changes in report-only mode and making incremental updates followed by retesting. That is Intercom-specific guidance, but the general safety principle applies: do not weaken the entire site policy simply to make a widget appear. If the affected browser is managed by an employer or school, a visitor may not have authority to change its network rules.

Review consent, storage, and access rules
Some widgets are intentionally unavailable when a visitor has not granted the required consent, or when account rules exclude that visitor or page. Check the site’s consent integration alongside the vendor settings; do not tell visitors to disable privacy protections as a workaround.
Consent and browser storage
Confirm whether the consent manager allows the chat service to load in the visitor’s current consent state and whether that decision reaches the widget correctly. The behavior is product-specific: Zendesk documents that denying cookie permission makes Chat unavailable in its classic widget. Its messaging widget relies on cookies and local or session storage and is hidden when all storage is disallowed. That does not establish the same behavior for other providers.
Widget availability settings
For Zendesk Chat, check whether Chat is enabled and review allowed domains, blocked countries, visitor authentication, and any suppression or hide settings. These rules can make a widget available to some visitors or pages but not others. Other platforms may use different setting names or enforce different conditions, so check the configuration for the identified widget generation.

Isolate browser extensions, cache, and page-code conflicts
If the problem seems limited to one browser or page, compare conditions before removing settings or changing the site.

Private browsing may still use some extensions or organization policies, so it is a comparison rather than proof.
- If permitted, test a clean browser profile with extensions disabled. Privacy, script-blocking, or security extensions can affect page behavior; use the console and Network panel to confirm whether one is involved.
- Clear site data only when appropriate and with the understanding that this can sign the visitor out or reset site preferences. Do not treat clearing data as a universal fix.
- If the widget works elsewhere but fails on one template, reproduce the issue on a minimal page containing the embed. Compare the result with the full page to identify interference from theme code, frameworks, scripts, or CSS.
Salesforce recommends iframe isolation for its Embedded Service on external websites to reduce conflicts with the host page. That is a Salesforce-specific deployment option, not a general fix to apply to every chat widget; use an iframe only when the provider supports that pattern. Salesforce’s browser troubleshooting guidance also discusses extensions, cookies, cache, and browser-specific causes of missing interface elements. Because that guidance concerns Lightning rather than chat widgets, confirm any suspected cause against the chat page’s own browser evidence.

- The relevant console error text and the failed request’s host and status or browser error.
- Recent changes to the site deployment, tag manager, consent setup, CSP, firewall, or browser policy.
- Steps to reproduce and whether the widget’s script appears to load before it fails or disappears.
Redact session identifiers, authentication tokens, customer messages, and personal information from screenshots or HAR files before sharing them. Visitors should send code, CSP, firewall, or consent changes to the site administrator rather than trying to alter settings they do not control.

Why does the chat widget load for me but not for another visitor?
Compare the affected visitor’s browser, profile, extensions, privacy and storage settings, and network. Also check access rules such as allowed domains, visitor authentication, country restrictions, and consent behavior; these can affect only some visitors.
The widget’s script loads, but the chat box is invisible. What should I check?
Check whether the provider is suppressing or hiding the widget, whether consent or storage rules make it unavailable, and whether page CSS or JavaScript hides or disrupts it. The Console and Network panel can show whether the failure occurs after the initial script request.
Can I fix the problem by turning off CSP?
Do not disable the site’s entire content security policy. Use the browser error to identify the blocked host and directive, then have the administrator compare that resource with the installed provider’s current allowlist and make only the necessary change.
Should I clear cookies and cache?
It can be a useful comparison in a browser-specific case, but it is not a universal remedy. Clearing site data may sign you out or reset preferences, and it will not fix a broken deployment, blocked network request, or incorrect widget configuration.
What should I include when contacting support?
Provide the page URL, exact widget generation, browser and operating system, timestamp and timezone, scope of the problem, console errors, failed request details, and recent site or policy changes. Remove tokens, session identifiers, personal data, and customer content from diagnostic files.
