When marine electronics stop sharing data, first identify exactly what has failed: a device with no power, a device missing from the network list, or a device that appears but shows no reading or image. Check the display’s device list or diagnostic view, then troubleshoot the relevant power, NMEA 2000, marine Ethernet, or sensor-cable path. Avoid changing several connections at once; a controlled test makes it easier to find the cause.
Start by isolating the symptom
Before unplugging anything, note which function is affected, which displays can still show it, when the problem began, any status lights or error text, and what changed recently. “Radar not showing on chartplotter,” “GPS data missing,” “no depth reading,” and “chartplotter not seeing NMEA 2000 devices” describe different failure points, even if they look similar at first.

| What you observe | First diagnostic path |
|---|---|
| The unit will not turn on | Check that unit’s own power feed and fuse. |
| The unit powers on but is absent from the device list | Check its connections and the network path it uses. |
| The unit is listed, but a reading or image is missing or unreliable | Check feature support, settings, sensor connections, and possible interference. |
A chartplotter’s device list can help distinguish a missing network connection from a data or sensor problem. Exact menu names and diagnostic tools vary by model, so use the manual for the equipment installed on your boat.
Check local power and visible connections
A network connection does not necessarily power the device. Some chartplotters, radars, and sensors need a separate power connection, so confirm the affected unit’s own supply and fuse before treating it as a data-network fault. Follow its installation manual, especially when tracing a factory-installed feed.

For radar power loss, Garmin’s procedure checks the radar’s status LED and compares voltage at the device with battery voltage, then checks whether the radar appears in the chartplotter’s marine device list. Use the procedure for the specific radar model; do not treat it as a universal test for every installation.
If an NMEA 2000 device is missing
A basic NMEA 2000 network uses a backbone, T-connectors, device drop cables, a network power connection, and two terminators at opposite ends of the backbone. Garmin says each connected device needs a T-connector and the network power cable also connects through a T-connector. Its guidance says not to install more than two terminators. A missing device can result from a loose or damaged drop, a missing network power feed, an incorrect backbone or T-connector arrangement, termination trouble, or device compatibility or configuration.

Test the device drop before changing the backbone
Check the chartplotter’s NMEA 2000 device list. If the unit is absent, Garmin recommends moving its drop cable to a known-working T-connector and checking the list again. If the unit appears after the swap, the original drop or connection point is suspect; if not, continue with the model-specific power, network, and compatibility checks. Garmin’s troubleshooting guidance allows a drop cable up to 6 m (20 ft) in the configuration it describes; do not assume that allowance applies to every network design.
Check network power and termination carefully
NMEA 2000 network power is nominally 12 Vdc. Garmin warns that a source above 12 Vdc may damage connected components and cautions against connecting power at more than one point unless a power isolator separates the connections. Some connected equipment, including engines or stereos, may supply network power unexpectedly. If the network design or power feeds are unfamiliar, stop rather than adding or moving a feed.

Garmin documents a resistance check for a specific troubleshooting procedure: disconnect network power, then measure between CAN-H and CAN-L at the female end of a drop cable. In that procedure, approximately 60 ohms is expected; about 120 ohms indicates one terminator, very high resistance suggests no terminators or a break, and 40 ohms indicates three terminators. These readings are specific to Garmin’s stated test and are not a substitute for the manual for another installation. Take electrical measurements only if you are qualified and can follow the product instructions safely.
Garmin’s 2021 technical reference gives 1 LEN as 50 mA. That figure can help when interpreting network load information, but it does not identify a missing device by itself.

If a marine Ethernet device is not found
Use the chartplotter’s network or device list as the first check. For a radar that does not appear, Garmin’s troubleshooting workflow recommends connecting radar directly to the chartplotter with a known-good marine Ethernet cable. If it appears on the direct connection, inspect the installed cable and network path rather than assuming the radar itself has failed.

- Where the manual supports it, try another compatible chartplotter port or verify cable continuity.
- If a network expander or switch is in the path, check its port lights and connections.
- After the device is detected, follow its instructions for any software update.
Ethernet sharing behavior can differ by manufacturer and model. Raymarine documents a designated datamaster for the multi-chartplotter systems covered by its guidance and says those networked chartplotters should use the same software version in that configuration. Do not apply those requirements to a different brand or installation without checking its manual. Marine Ethernet cable and connector compatibility is also equipment-specific.

If the device appears but its data or image is wrong
A device can be connected and listed while still failing to provide the expected information. Check that the unit and its connected sensor support the feature, that it is enabled, and that relevant settings match the installation. For a missing depth reading, for example, determine whether the chartplotter recognizes the sensor before treating the symptom as a network-wide outage.
Investigate sonar and intermittent readings
Inspect the transducer or data cable and its connectors. Interference can also cause intermittent sonar or data problems. Simrad recommends checking GPS antenna cabling, data connections, and corrosion, then switching instruments and LED lighting off one at a time to isolate interference. Garmin identifies trolling motors, pumps, radios, radar, lighting-related electrical sources, and data cables as possible sonar-interference sources.
Change one likely source at a time and observe whether the symptom changes. This helps separate an interference issue from a damaged connection or unsupported feature without assuming that every unreliable reading has the same cause.
Record evidence and know when to get help
Before contacting support, capture the model names, software versions, device-list results, status lights, exact error wording, and outcome of each cable swap or direct-connection test. Raymarine describes a diagnostic screen that shows connected NMEA 2000 devices and messages and can save a log for technical support; availability and steps depend on the equipment and manual.
For persistent faults, an unfamiliar factory-installed NMEA 2000 system, unclear power isolation, or wiring you cannot confidently identify, contact the boat manufacturer, an authorized or certified installer, or a marine electronics technician. Do not assume accessories from different manufacturers are interchangeable, and do not alter an uncertain network power feed or topology as a trial-and-error fix.
