In Andy Forest’s 2015 Make: project, the tripwire sends a redstone signal to a nearby ComputerCraft computer, which makes a network request to a Spark Core microcontroller. The Core then pulses a voice module to play the recording.
How the tripwire-to-alarm signal works
The project is best understood as a chain of separate steps: an in-game event becomes redstone, a modded computer detects that redstone, and a microcontroller receives an internet request and activates an audio module.

- A player crosses string stretched between two tripwire hooks.
- A hook emits a redstone signal to a nearby ComputerCraft computer.
- A Lua program running on that computer waits for a redstone event on its back input and checks whether that input is active.
- If active, the program sends an HTTP POST to the Spark device’s
alarmOncloud function. - The Spark Core raises output D5 for one second. D5 is connected to the voice module’s PLAYE input, which plays its recording through a speaker.
The Make: project page, “Minecraft Activated Arduino Alarm,” by Andy Forest, was published May 20, 2015, and updated March 8, 2023. Its example recording is “Intruder Alert!”
Parts and original wiring
The original bill of materials lists a Spark Core microcontroller, an ISD1820-style voice recording module, male-to-female jumper wires, a speaker, and a computer running Minecraft. The Make: page gives an example voice-module listing, but current availability and module specifications are not established. Check the exact module’s voltage requirements and pinout before connecting it to any controller.
#1 Best Overall
- BUILD THE DREADED CREEPER – Young explorers, ages 10 and up, build a large poseable version of the iconic Minecraft mob
- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element
- POSEABLE ROOM DECOR – After building, kids can put their creation on display in the bedroom or playroom
- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – Makes a wonderful birthday or any-time gift idea for boys and girls
| Voice module connection | Spark Core connection |
|---|---|
| VCC | 3V3 |
| GND | GND |
| PLAYE | D5 |
| SPEAKER terminals | Connect the speaker wires to the module’s screw terminals |
The original instructions describe connecting the parts with jumper wires and say soldering is not required for that arrangement. That does not establish that every similarly named module or replacement controller has the same pinout or electrical requirements.
What the software does
On the Spark Core
The firmware registers a cloud function named alarmOn and configures D5 as an output. When a request invokes that function, it sets D5 high, waits one second, and sets it low. Its main loop() is empty because the device waits for a cloud request to invoke the function.

- 5 LEGO FIGURES – Builders can cast a Wastelands Wanderer minifigure, a slime and 3 zombies (including one with enchanted leggings and gold sword and one with diamond helmet) in their pretend play adventure stories
- GAMING-INSPIRED FUNCTIONS – Set in the Minecraft desert biome, this zombie dungeon features a rotating, zombie-spawning chamber and a sliding piece that triggers a rockfall
- INSPIRE CREATIVE STORYTELLING – The Wastelands Wanderer, equipped with a diamond pickaxe, mace and netherite armor, takes on a slime and 3 zombies in the desert biome dungeon
- ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features netherite armor, a mace, diamond pickaxe, gold sword, diamond helmet, crafting table, torch and a chest containing bread, bone and rotten flesh
On the ComputerCraft computer
The Lua example constructs a URL for the Spark device function, waits for os.pullEvent("redstone"), checks redstone.getInput("back"), and sends an HTTP POST when the back input is active. The published code includes a device ID and access token. Treat both as private credentials: do not publish real values in code, screenshots, or shared projects.
The example reflects older Particle authentication practice. Particle’s Cloud API Getting Started guidance recommends sending API tokens in an Authorization header. It also says query-parameter authentication is unavailable for accounts created after December 4, 2024, with a documented exception for requests to older products. Anyone adapting the old example should consult current authentication guidance and keep tokens secret.

Version and hardware caveats before attempting a rebuild
The Make: instructions target Minecraft 1.7.10, Forge for 1.7.10, and ComputerCraft 1.73. Those are historical project requirements, not confirmation that the combination works with current Minecraft releases. The article itself cautions that mod compatibility can lag behind Minecraft updates.
The Spark Core is discontinued. Particle’s Device OS API – Core identifies 1.4.4 as the last Device OS version usable with the Core. Particle’s CLI guidance says its current CLI no longer supports discontinued platforms such as Spark Core. Its Product Lifecycle Stages policy also says end-of-support hardware is not guaranteed to work with official developer tools; discontinued devices may still connect to Particle Device Cloud, but are outside Particle’s SLA, customer support, and limited hardware warranty.

For a new build, first verify the Minecraft, Forge, and ComputerCraft versions you intend to use, then choose a supported controller whose digital output and network path suit the design. No drop-in replacement for the Spark Core is established here. A replacement may require changes to the firmware, cloud request, wiring, or all three.
Adapting the idea to robots or other devices
Forest suggests using the same general approach with other redstone sources, including pressure plates, switches, buttons, and minecart pressure plates, and proposes adapting it to robots and Arduino-programmable gadgets. The article does not provide or test a robot build, so treat that as an extension idea rather than a ready-made design.
For an adaptation, consider these selection questions:
Quick Recap
- Can the game-side setup produce a trigger? Confirm the chosen Minecraft and mod versions support the redstone source and computer interface you plan to use.
- Can the controller receive the trigger path? Decide how the ComputerCraft program will reach the controller, such as through a network request, and verify that the selected controller and service support it.
- What output does the device need? A voice module can respond to a digital trigger; robot motors generally require suitable motor-control hardware rather than being connected directly to a microcontroller pin.
- What must change in the code and wiring? Map the trigger, controller input or request, and output device before building. Confirm voltage, pinout, and power requirements against the actual hardware documentation.
