The internal battery remains its primary power source, so hardwiring may reduce how often you need to recharge it, but Ring does not promise a specific increase in battery life.
What trickle charging means for a Ring doorbell
Ring describes wiring from an existing doorbell system, a transformer, or a Plug-In Adapter as a way to trickle-charge the battery. In its FAQ, Ring says battery-powered doorbells are primarily powered by their battery even when connected to doorbell wiring. The practical result is supplemental charging, not guaranteed continuous operation without a battery.

How much the interval between manual charges changes depends on the model and usage conditions. Ring’s cited support guidance does not give a charging rate or a guaranteed number of extra days or months.

Check transformer requirements for your exact model
Ring’s UK support guidance gives a general range for connecting to an existing doorbell system: 8–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 5–40 VA. This is general Ring guidance, not a universal specification for every Ring doorbell. Confirm the requirements for your exact model before choosing or reusing a transformer. Voltage alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

Ring warns against incompatible power sources, which can damage the device and create an electric-shock risk. Its FAQ also warns against halogen and garden-lighting transformers, and DC supplies not made by or certified by Ring. Do not repurpose a lighting circuit or improvise a power supply.
Choose a power option that fits your installation

Ring lists these as power options, but they are not interchangeable for every device or home. Its charging guidance also covers USB charging when you need to recharge the battery manually.

Know which wiring details are model-specific
Ring says most battery-powered doorbells need no wiring changes for direct transformer wiring. It identifies the Video Doorbell 2 and Video Doorbell (1st Gen) as exceptions that require a wirewound resistor in that setup. Do not add a resistor to other models by default; check the current instructions for the exact device.
If an in-home chime is bypassed, Ring’s instructions describe disconnecting the two wires at the chime terminals and joining them. Homes and installations differ, so do not assume that arrangement applies to your wiring. Consult Ring’s model-specific instructions or a qualified electrician.

Install safely and set the chime option correctly
Before working on doorbell wiring, Ring directs users to disconnect power to the installation area at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Wiring can cause electric shock if handled while energized. Local laws or building codes may require permits or installation by a qualified electrician; use a professional if you are unsure about the wiring or applicable rules.
After installation, make the in-home chime setting match the actual setup. Ring says to select Mechanical or Digital for a connected compatible chime. Choose No chime or None when using a Plug-In Adapter, bypassing the in-home chime, or wiring directly to a transformer. Ring warns that an incorrect chime setting can damage the device.
