To translate a webpage in Chrome on Android, open the page and tap the language you want in the translation notification at the top of the screen. If no notification appears, tap More (the menu to the right of the address bar), then tap Translate. Chrome then shows the page in the language you chose.
The steps below follow Google’s official Android Chrome Help page, accessed 7 October 2026. Chrome menu labels and layouts can change with updates, so if a label looks different on your phone, look for the same option in the same place in the menu.

Translate the whole page
Chrome offers two ways to start a translation. Which one you see depends on whether the translation notification appears for the page you are viewing.

When the translation notification appears
- Open Chrome on your Android device and navigate to the page.
- In the notification at the top of the screen, tap the language you want the page translated into.
When no notification appears
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Tap More, the menu to the right of the address bar.
- Tap Translate.
Choose the language Chrome translates into
Chrome uses two separate language settings. The prompt language is what you pick each time a translation is offered. The default target language is the one Chrome uses to translate into by default.

Change the default target language
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Languages, then Advanced.
- Tap Translate into this language.
- Choose a language from the list.
Pick a different language from the translation prompt
- When the translation prompt appears, tap Settings.
- Tap More languages.
- Select the language you want.
Control which languages Chrome offers to translate
Under More > Settings > Languages, you can manage how Chrome handles translation across all sites:
- Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate: turn this on to receive translation offers, or off to stop them.
- Don’t offer to translate these languages: languages on this list never trigger a translation offer. Found under Languages > Advanced.
- Automatically translate these languages: pages in these languages are translated without asking. Also found under Languages > Advanced.
To change the languages you read, open More > Settings > Languages, then use Preferred languages to add a language, drag languages to reorder them, or tap More beside a language to remove it.

Translate selected text
You do not need to translate the whole page to look up a word or phrase.

- Highlight the word or phrase on the page.
- Read the translation Chrome shows at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the translation to see more information.
- For languages supported by text-to-speech, tap Listen to hear the text read aloud. Listen is not available for every language.
When translation does not work
- Refresh the page. This resolves many cases where translation does not start.
- Translate cannot be selected. Google says the language might not be available for translation. The help page does not publish a complete list of supported languages, so do not assume a particular language will be offered.
- Changed menu labels. Chrome updates can rename or move items. Look for the same function under More, or check Settings for the language options described above.
Which setting to use
For a single page, use the notification or More > Translate. This does not change your settings. If you regularly read one language you do not understand, set it under Automatically translate these languages, or set a default target language, so you are not prompted each time.
